Reficul is a game in which the world is ending/going through an apocalypse and you’re a survivor(from what I can tell). As the game describes it “As darkness descends upon the world. all contact is lost. Set in a small town in North America, will you survive the dark new world? Prepare for a challenging and unique enemy, realistic weapon handling, powerful magical relics, perma-death, and lots of eerie VR fun in this open world VR apocalypse game. The game will test your survival skills in every way, how you handle a weapon, limited inventory, observation and you really have to do some work to survive!”. Reficul boasts quite a creepy environment – with a gloomy ambiance and monsters that make some growling noises. Even as a VR veteran, it did cause a bit of “eegh” that most horror games do accomplish and put “scary movies” to shame with the involvement. The graphics and lighting were great and really fit together. You basically start in a house and have random storylines(I believe) each time you play. Items are even differently placed around the world each time. I find this very interesting and compelling to replay the game. Combat isn’t BAD once you get used to where you should be aiming(sortof low/center mass on the shadow guys). I am unable to comment on monsters in the game as I only saw the one (shadows). I generally have two large problems with the game. The first is the movement. I cannot stand delayed locomotion or teleport movement. It just breaks the game for me. Basically anytime you teleport, you must wait about 0.8 seconds before you can teleport again. I messed around with the locomotion also but it seemed to have the same issue(0.8 seconds) and you crawled like a snail. My guess is that this is you can’t easily kite enemies(I’m not sure you can even outrun them with the current setup). This problem directly leads to my second problem of the game : Realistic weapon loading and handling. I know some of you love this and even in my VR Invaders Video, I received a comment how I don’t know how to “handle a gun in real life”. That is definitely true but I am playing a game. When I’m fighting cartoony aliens or demons – I expect a bit of leniency towards fiction rather than realism. To give the game credit, it does have a tutorial to explain the gun mechanics (and each gun is different) but in the heat of a moment, I can’t imagine trying to load any of the firearms – especially when you can’t get any distance between you and the monsters I encountered. I think loading ammo into a gun is fair but the extra actions such as ejecting mags seem a bit overkill. Even in situations where I was under no pressure(the tutorial), I found it a bit of a struggle to put ammo into the gun and fire the gun. Despite my problems with the game, it felt to have a lot of promise. I wish there was an option to make movement unrestricted and guns more arcade-y and it’d probably be perfect for me. The game truly is rogue-like and has a lot of effort put into it (I can tell). The atmosphere truthfully gave me chills and again, the graphics were good. For $14.99, it IS a game and it DOES work – even if I don’t like the way it works. Overall, I give the game a 6/10 – if I didn’t have to deal with the movement and firearm system, I’d probably be thinking more like 8/10.
This game has one of the best atmospheres for such a game, easily up there with dreadhalls/paranormal activity. The difference, you can kill the bad guys (if your lucky). The game is a tough horror survival, with only a few clues and perma death. The developers are quick to reply and have been updating the game regularly with the game becoming more refinded. nb they have added bonus game (wave shooter for free)
9/10 This is a very good little horror game. I loved it. It is only a one-location game though, and just as you get good at it, it's over. Shame there isn't more.
Thoughts and Review at the Bottom. Pros & Cons first for those who prefer to read while scrolling in Review pages ;P PROS : - Fantastic ATMOSPHERE! - Solid Voice Acting - Shadow Puppet Monsters are Damn Creepy! - Controls Seem Pretty Tight (For the Most Part) - Weapons look good, Recoil and Sights is handled very well. - Offers BOTH Teleport and Locomotion (Track-Pad) - Loading Individual Rounds into a Magazine (Haven't done that one yet in VR, so Respect) - Content (Right Now there is a A Lot of Content in this game, including Mini-Games and for a VR Title this is Great, I want to see more Dev's do this like Arizona Sunshine) CONS : - Some Clipping - Stick On Doors (Have Improved, but not vanished) - Minor Stuttering/Lag (Which would not matter so much, except this game uses Perma-Death) The Review - The Potential! Oh God, the potential ... this game could be and probably will become Epic. Its extremely atmospheric, the tutorial does a nice job of letting you play with all of the mechanics until you are ready to go to the actual game screen (which turns out to be your living room, very awesome). After which, we are greeted by a very well done News Broadcast. I have to say that the Actors and VA's do a great job with this scene, the lip sync needs some work, but that aside a very well done presentation. Audio as a whole is just handled very well in this game, and the Devs should be proud of the work done thus far. The Devs have remained very active and engaging with the community. I am very happy to reprt that the issues that once made this game unplayable for Vive users are now no longer a concern. Final Thoughts - I Really like what I'm seeing with the game in terms of the patches that have been done so far, the Dev's communication, Dedication to craft a very killer experience is stitched into every update. I will be keeping this game installed and am looking forward to its future development. **Important** I did receive my copy of the game for Free and I'm grateful to the Devs for giving our Curator the opportunity to check out what they have been working on.
What horror games should be. Having a great time with this, heart rate really does go up as the sun goes down. Atmosphere is awesome, audio is a big factor and sets a terrifying mood and gets the fear gland pumping. Weapons and reloading are great and the locomotion works great too. Want a scary game for you and your friends? This is it!
I have to agree with most of the other reviews so far. This game has great atmosphere and immersion already, and the devs are active and open to suggestions. If you like scary games this is the one to play. Beware the shadows.
I really didn't care for this one at first. But after some updates and a little in game progress something clicked and I got into the whole end of the world vibe of it. It's not without it's cons, but I feel the pros outweigh them.
Reficul is a great Horror game. That is all
