Reficul is an interesting horror game. What intrigued us to play this is that the game has an open world, perma-death and no jumpscares. I think this makes the more unique than most VR horror games out there at the moment. Perma-death means that if you die, you will have to restart the game. If you stay alive, game will be saved each time you enter or exit an area and you can continue the game. The game also features cool weapon mechanics. You need to do gun loading and reloading in the right manner, like you do in real life. This takes a bit more time, but I think that makes the game more immersive. The version we played however only showed Oculus controllers in game, so I had to use that controller to reload a gun and sometimes that felt a bit weird. I didn’t know when my in-game controllers would touch the right part of the gun to be able to reload it. I think it would be nice to have more intuitive hand animations that mimics real life hands for this kind of realistic weapon handling. The gameplay is pretty challenging. There is no map that you can open whenever you want, so you have to pay attention to where you are, where you have to go and how much ammo you have left to be able to survive the night. Luckily in the game you can also find unlimited powered relics, which look like bibles. Some of them have special powers, like unlimited light. However you cannot store that in your inventory, so that means you got to think which one is the most handy to take with you. The version we played did have some bugs still. Things like we could easily teleport inside a house through a wall or closed door. We hope to see this fixed soon. This might be fixed in the early access version though! Overall, we think that the game is really interesting and even without jumpscares, the atmosphere makes the game scary. If you are into horror that is not linear and doesn’t have just jumpscares, then this one is definitely for you.
Reficul is just shy of playable and could one day be a decent horror survival game for VR.
In its current state, Reficul is just shy of playable. It needs some control design changes. It needs to NOT have teleport as the primary form of movement. A refined and consistent control scheme would help this game's initial impression a ton. It's suffering from a worse control scheme than Fallout 4 VR, which is to say that it's unbearable sometimes and you'll often die just because of the awkward controls. For example, your flashlight autoconnects to your pocket slots. You need to wave your flashlight around to spot the shadows before they get too close, but often the flashlight will get caught in the pocket slots by accident. Gun reloading is also a two-handed venture, but you can't see what you're doing very well and you have to be absurdly accurate with the magazine being placed perfectly in the gun or else you'll lose the magazine to the ground. In which case, you lost the ammo forever, because the ground does not align with your playspace perfectly and the magazine collider does not meet the hand collider. Did I mention you don't have hands? You just have Vive wands for hands. That's a shame for a game that's trying to scare you to ruin its immersion so quickly with no first-person model at all, not even hands.
Yes, the minigames are accessible, kind of.
I don't like the way you have to click the trackpad to access the minigames. It's just not obvious and could be a more intuitive control scheme. I had to read a forum post to even figure out how to use the in-game tablets.
Update: Minigames are easier to access but they're more broken than before.
The minigames are now all located on their own arcade cabinets in an additional room next to the starting living room. They're much easier to find and get into, but they don't work at all. The zombie game doesn't even let me live for a second once I spawn into it, making it entirely unplayable. The other games are just broken messes of what looks like a half complete prototype of a game that doesn't even have proper reload mechanics. The spiders can be avoided entirely by teleporting onto the top of a vehicle. The aliens game feels like it might be a little better at the start with some AI allies, but the enemies are not visible and shoot you from far away into the distant scenery. Again, the reload mechanic is broken, and aiming doesn't feel right.
Minigames could be the focus of development.
Reficul needs to focus more on its zombie survival and spider survival modes. I would like to see more in both those game modes, because it's just more fun to me to kill things than run from ghostly demons. In fact, I originally thought this was going to be a zombie survival game with a demonic theme. I was a little disappointed when it turned out to be a bunch of black shadows chasing me around in the main game mode.
The game is huge in the wrong ways.
The overall size of the game is way too large for what you're getting. It takes up somewhere around 25GB in its current state, and it feels very empty and very under construction. I would love to see more interactive elements in and out of the houses. Currently, cars are not interactive at all, and most of the houses are completely empty with nothing, not even furniture inside them. That said, the texture quality is pretty good, and most of the environment looks semi-realistic. I could see where the focus of development has been: on environmental assets. This game is plagued by technical flaws. You can teleport through walls. You can outrun everything in the game by teleporting. You run out of ammo too quickly, and dropping a magazine means you may not be able to pick it back up. There's little sense of danger or urgency once you figure out teleportation is faster than enemies. It feels like the main game's demons come out of nowhere, too, so moving to other houses seems pointless story-wise. I wish the character's motivation was a little more obvious. Am I looking for my friends? Which house am I supposed to go to? I know I'm not supposed to go north, but which way is north? Is there a compass? It's just not a well told story, despite there being a video clip on a TV right at the beginning of the game telling a fairly immersive news story. If you can make a news parody video like that, you can tell a character's backstory and explain where to go more effectively. I read all the notes in the game, and they're honestly not very helpful. The AI in this game actually forgets you exist after a short while and walks away from you rather than attacking you. I would like to see more intelligence in the artificial intelligence since it's a game about being chased. Even if you're scripting it, it could be a lot more immersive. Add more to the AI logic.
I played this game for 17 Minutes, but I sadly had to request a refund. This game will be promising when more thought is put into opening the doors and over all layout. I really couldn't get into the game with all the problems. Doors sticky, not opening or just stuttering there, Took away from the immerison. Maybe in 6 months I come back to this, but now I have to say it's not recommmended.
Reficul in its intial state was only sorta playable with an array of bugs and glitches as well as not having any polish and little content. It's not surpising only a few people like me decided to take a chance on this thing. The good new is however the devs are continuing to do significant work on the game, recently putting in a patch that made far better in my opinion. I am confident the game will continue to see improvment, is it worth buying now? Maybe. There are still some bugs and significant rough edges, so its up for you to decide. Bear in mind however there is currently no youtube footage of the latest update, all footage on youtube shows the worse old version at this point in time.
I played the game in a very early state and there were some big issues with quite a number of things. If i went into detail this review would take forever to write so ill keep it short and sweet. This game has a ton of potential, i really mean that. As of today I cant say that id personally buy it (i did refund it) but at the time of writing this it is on sale so you may want to jump in early and follow development. I will be keeping my eye on the project but as of 1/29/2018 i cant say its a good game...however like i said about the framework for an excellent game is there. Its being developed by a single person so its going to take some time for the quality level to get to a state where i would buy it again but i really do hope that it does get there and then i can change this review to a positive one. I wish the dev all the luck in the world.
This game really nails the sense of dread and had me looking over my shoulder at every turn. The fact that Reficul is based around perma death really makes the player aware of their surroundings and the choices they will make while playing. There are a few bugs with the movement system in the game. While I found it great that both free movement and directional teleportation are both enabled simultaneously in the game there were many areas where the free movement would get stuck and I would have to resort to the teleportation to move forward. Even with the small bugs I found this to be a terrifying yet enjoyable experience! Since Reficul is just releasing into early access I feel with time Mad About Games Studios will be able to iron out these early issues and will create a great survival horror experience from the foundation they have laid here.
Game received for FREE but gameplay and impressions based on 1st playthrough. My 1st Impressions: This is the 3rd VR release from Mad About Games and you can tell they know what they are doing. Everything feels just right from the weapon handling to the cool sound effects and amazing sense of atmosphere. You never know when something scary is about to appear and attack you. This is one of those rare games that actually gives you a sense of dread in the pit of your stomach. GTX 1060 (6GB) gameplay (With Commentary): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Bed_4ydSJE
I have been following the game since very early access - I can say the atmosphere is awesome and the concept is chilling. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves atmospheric horror mixed with open world survival skills. It has improved with each release and the develepors have always been very responsive. There is quite a bit to like here and the cost is spot on - give it a go. Edit: The new Halloween update has added a ton of new features and play modes to this game. It also cleaned up some issues that people had with movement snd such. An arcade mode with less demanding resource management was added as well. The game was quite good to begin with but it now has improved dramatically - scary as hell. (Make sure you are AT LEAST this tall to play... heh.)
I played this game for an hour but just couldn't get past the movement while holding flashlight and pistol and the other bugs. and dying and having to start all over is TERRIBLE!!! It has great potential and you can the devs worked their butts off, but for right now it needs some fine tuning. I wanted to like it but couldn't. Not worth the $20. I had to get a refund. Will wait till the price drops...a lot, then might try it again.
