I really enjoy the game so far it is a mash between FTL and Slay the Spire which I enjoyed very much. I like storyline you chase across the many seas and the deck building needs you to balance the defense cards and attacks by your boarding crew a your canons. I found few minor bugs but nothing major and the team is diligent at fixing them so far. Great games!
It’s a fun game, 2.0 update fixed the few gripes I had about the speed of combat encounters. The new card system is much more intuitive and allows for better stations planning each round (though I did kinda like the RNG of drawing cards each turn). It’s definitely worth a play if you like roguelike games and or pirates.
[EN] Red Rogue Sea is a really good turn-based tactical deck-building game with naval battles. After a few rounds, you understand the gameplay mechanics and can enjoy the naval battles. What I like is that the developers aren't giving up on their game with the current update 2.0, so I hope that they will continue to work on Red Rogue Sea based on further feedback from players.
This game has a lot of potential, but I have a bunch of issues with it that I think must be solved if devs want this go take off: 1. The gameplay is too slow, most of the time I just skip turns and do nothing, shuffling the deck, that's boring and time consuming 2. Too much RNG! Give me ways to draw what I want, don't limit what my deck size is, I don't need 20 cannonballs 3. There's no clear sense of what my goal is, where should I go, where is the royal army headed? too much unkown 4. Rum feels useless, maybe I don't get the mechanic, but I haven't had the need to use it 5. Movement is waaay too restrictive, it makes me not want to move my characters 6. This game is a good example why FTL was a recipe for success and this is not. There are a lot of mechanics that look fun, but are horrible. I hope I see this game turn around for the better, but until then, refund requested.
Red Rogue Sea has improved a lot with the latest update. The original version left me a little bit confused about how to properly play battles, but now combat feels much smoother and more intuitive. In addition, I think that the prologue does a fantastic job explaining the mechanics.... Thanks to these changes, I have found the whole experience way more enjoyable. Great update!"
Voting up because I love the concept and I think there's some really fun content so far, but I think the game has a lot of things that could be improved on. Thankfully it looks like the devs are still working on the game, so I hope they'll make these things a priority. The good: I have long thought that FTL would be better as a turn-based game, and here it is! You can enjoy building your ship's arsenal and using it precisely in turn-based combat. I haven't gotten very far yet, but I see a lot of potential for how you can build your ship. The story missions are also nice and entertaining. The not-so-good: There's a lot of crucial stuff that isn't explained very well. The prologue explains some stuff, but there's still a lot left. Like what all the different symbols on the map mean. They have names, but there's no explanation of what they do, what kind of events, dangers, and resources they each have. Also a lot of the combat mechanics. I just now learned that you can swap out cards in combat by looking at other reviews. And I still don't know what determines who gets the first turn each round, it seems like I move first at the start of each combat but then the enemy moves first on each subsequent round, which for example makes the skill that disables a cannon pretty useless, since the cannon has already fired by the time I can use that skill. There's no wiki for this game either, so this stuff is just left unexplained if you don't just instinctively know it I guess. An instructions manual explaining all of the game's systems would really help. There's also a lot of tedious stuff that adds up, which makes the game overall a slog. Also it's tedious to reposition your crew after every battle, I wish that there was some way to set permanent starting positions like in FTL. (If there's a way to do this, then like everything else it's not well explained.) There's a lot of combat stuff that could probably be automated. And there's a lot of loading for such a simple game. I'm about 4 hours in I think and I'm only in the second sector of my first run after the prologue. Again, I really like the concept and I hope that more improvements will be made!
PROS: – I would honestly recommend it to fans of FTL-style games who are looking for more depth in questing and narrative. – Also great if you don’t mind slow-paced roguelikes, hard to master and with a learning curve to fully understand all the mechanics. CONS: – You might not enjoy it as much if you’re looking for a simple plug-and-play experience.
Awesome game. Really cool pirate vibes and all around fun atmosphere. Graphics are great as well. Combat is interesting and builds seem interesting. I look forward to further improve of the UI, I would love to see the amount of clicks required to get through a round of combat decrease significantly. More than anything I would like the row of actions to not cover a portion of the ships, because opening and closing that menu felt clunky as well. The merchant start felt especially tedious to me, but that could have been my own fault. It seemed optimal to spam the mercenary power to distract the enemy crew, but that felt really tedious after a while and caused fights to drag on. I'm really happy with this game and looking forward to an improved UI. Has a ton of potential! Good work team <3
