Reviews

I guess I was expecting more out of this, I should of read the reviews. Looks interesting but the game play feels boring, not something I wish to continue.
Not a fan. Combat feels unrewarding, characters are bland, cutscenes are laughably bad. I was just thoroughly bored by the time I quit.
This was an interesting one to finish and I don't remember how this found its way into my library. But it was a short adventure and I appreciate what the devs tried to do...for the most part. The story is that you are a woman named Divine. Your parents and kingdom were destroyed one day by...well you can't seem to remember. What follows is an adventure where you delve into your mind to recover your memories on what happened, your past, and what you have to do. Red Goddess is an indie Metroidvania. You control Divine with just running and jumping at first, but as you progress, you will gain new abilities and forms. You will have access to 3 forms: Rage, Fear, and Divine. Rage and Fear fight mostly the same but when you engage in combat, certain enemies can only be damaged by the corresponding form (Red can only be hurt by Rage and blue can only be hurt by fear). While in Divine form, you can unlock lots of different movement abilities like double jump and possession. It takes some getting used to, but mastering this game requires you to be able to switch between these forms on the fly. Most of the "exploration" in Red Goddess is not optional as you need to find crystals to progress the story. New areas are locked behind how many you find and so you will have to check your map often to make sure you get all of them in the area or you will find yourself backtracking. Luckily they are usually pretty easy to find so it's not too much of a hassle. The game visually looks kind of rough. As I said, I appreciate what the devs were trying to do, but it's still a bit "meh" on the eyes. There aren't that many enemy types and the text bubble dialogue sorta takes you out of the story. Add the many, many other problems and you may find yourself wondering if this game is worth finishing. The gripe section on this one is gonna be big so, hold on to your hats. Sound mixing is bad. Often times the music is either too loud, sound effects are loud and not balanced. There aren't that many abilities and a huge lack of secrets for the Metroidvania. Combat is very frustrating since the game will often mix up the different colored enemies all at once on you. The golem enemies have horrible hitboxes and whenever you have to fight them, get ready for frustration until you get a later ability. Sometimes when you cast fireball possession, Divine will get stuck in place. Lots of random bugs you will run into. Probably the most frustrating gripe I have is that everytime you die you have to wait for a loading screen each time. At first this won't seem so bad, but when you get to the annoying platforming sections later in the game that are full of unfair instadeath traps, it gets sooo aggravating. Final verdict? Unless you're looking for a short Metroidvania to pass the time, I unfortunately can't recommend this game. It doesn't take too much of your time as you can probably beat it in 4-6 hours. But the amount of bugs and gripes you will run into will make it a frustrating journey. Thanks for reading!
If you were thinking about buying this game, change your mind immediately. Thank God it only cost me $2, which is triple what it's worth. I was able to make it passed the first area and onto the actual main game. Right when I got the Rage character upgrade, I can go no further. The game crashes EVERY single time you try to get through the third breakable red block. If you're lucky, the game will let you break it before it crashes. At the same time, the controls are super janky. The paths you have to take are non-linear and hard to discern, the WASD controls don't like to do what you want them to do, and the combat is broken. I feel bad for you if you backed this game on Kickstarter. I really do.
