Reaper - Tale of a Pale Swordsman

I've been playing this game since it was released and I still love it<3

when this game got 'fixed' it became unplayable unfortunately i wanted to finish off a game i used to play on mobile and i didn't mind the terrible map controls or repetitive battles because it felt fast enough. very unluckily for me this game got updated when im probably 3/4 way through the game, this 'fixed' the game and made it smoother and better functioning, this caused the game, for me, to turn into slow-motion. it felt like playing in 0.5x speed, everything slowed down (not lag/frames), i can't believe this was the intended way to play the game as it now feels unplayable, whatever was wrong with game before, vsync, poor refresh rate, whatever it was, made it playable but now i can't even bear to finish it :(

Comprei por uma lembrança distante que tive quando ainda era criança e joguei a demo diversas vezes no celular. Deveria ter me apegado à tal memória. O jogo é travado em 30fps, os controles são ruins e o combate é idiota. A ideia de levar a interface de mobile inteiramente para o computador sem alterar nada foi um equívoco gigantesco. Ou, erro de caráter por quem fez o jogo. Nunca saberemos.

Joguei no mobile era bom ,mas no pc esta inviável, jogo fecha sozinho, jogo games como CS2, Lol, Dota2, games pesados e o pc aguenta.

Think of this game as a melee bullethell with an interesting story. There are some things that are frustrating when you start out, such as identifying hazards, but overall it's a fun, relaxing game with really good art. You should know that this is a mobile port, and the controls tend to reflect that, but I like to use it to pass the time when I need something low stakes that lets me pay attention to the outside world. It's definitely worth the 6 bucks.

This is a game that has the quality of a mobile time-killer and the price of a decent indie-title. The contorls are stiff and would fit a flash game. The strory and gameplay are repetitive and boring. When I first played it, I felt genuinely upset about buying it even though it was dirt cheap.

Reaper, unos de los mejores juegos que conosco asta ahora ya que pueden aver mejores, bueno a lo que venia. Reaper un juego vastante divertido y con estrategias increibles que uno deve de saber para ganar, lo que mas me gusta es que no tiene microtransachiones, y creo que por ser de steam te dan una espada verde de 1 estrella, por que en android no te la dan, y bueno, sus graficos, si entorno, sus animaciones, sus objetos, y mas cosas, me parecen un gran esfuerso por parte de Hexagon. Bueno, como soy humilde me compre las dos versiones, la de android (que tienes que comprar el juego completo) y de pc que esta mas barato pero esta bien.

The December 2024 update has made the game playable again! I honestly never thought the devs would ever get back to Reaper since it's not a game that gets DLC (would absolutely love some) or regular updates. I cannot write just how excited I am to be able to get back in and 100% the achievements on this game. Tale of a Pale Swordsman was one of the first games I bought to play on my first self-built custom PC, to say this is a nostalgia pick is an understatement. It's a mechanistically simple game with a simple story, but it does it so well that you can't help but be enchanted by it. I still consider the sound and music design with the graphics/visuals top tier --again nothing too crazy, but VERY well done and cohesive (plus the 2024 update also brought higher quality audio/music files). The characters are cute with unique designs that make it easy to track which enemy type and friendly (or not) faction/NPCs you're interacting with. The items and skill cards are also some of my favorite designs in all of the games I've ever played too. Seriously, if you don't love those overly complicated rogue-lites and want an excellently simple (it can still get crazy in Dark Harvest though) experience, Tale of a Pale Swordsman is the game for you.

Reaper has a lot of charm — the art style is genuinely beautiful and the dialogue/story kept me engaged longer than I expected from a mobile port — but the PC experience is rough around the edges in ways that are hard to ignore. The auto-attack system made sense on a touchscreen, but on PC it just means you shuffle up to enemies and watch your character swing while you wait to build rage skulls for the actual interesting moves. The floaty movement combined with bouncing gold coins that fly offscreen every time you kill something turned what should be satisfying moments into minor frustrations that compound over hours of play. The dash triggering from a double-tap is genuinely dangerous near pits, and some enemy types feel less like skill checks and more like slot machines. It's worth picking up on a deep sale if you like the aesthetic and want something low-stakes to zone out to, but at full price there are better options.
