What did they do to Raiden? These are my initial impressions. They may change at any time, every time. The first thing that hits you is how generic the music sounds. Sure, there's some nice choral pieces and a Vocaloid? in one of the songs, but nothing as memorable as prior games. The second thing that hits you is pretty egregious for a SHMUP, and that's extremely bad bullet visibility. A lot of the bullet colors blend into the background. Secondary to this is the bad color-to-bullet type designation. They don't follow ANY sort of logic. Aside from the cancellable-on-enemy-destruction yellow bullets, shapes and colors don't seem to indicate anything unique to the color or shape. There are various shapes and sizes and SPEEDS of the red and blue bullets. You never connect colors and shapes to the bullets, and it's needlessly confusing on top of the extraordinarily terrible bullet vis. It's honestly worse than Garegga, and that's hard to top. Screen space can't be adjusted. Score/Bombs/Cheer COULD be put in the giant borders, but instead it has to take up the main game area for no discernable reason. Alongside this, there's no TATE configuration (vertical screen). OH, I see now, they normie-fied Raiden. Boo-urns! Ship weapons are slow and weak, like a euroshmup. The game wants you to kill everything, yet your weapons are so ineffective and enemy patterns are spaced so far off to the sides, making getting them all virtually impossible. Anything besides the Purple bending/homing laser is effectively made useless. It really feels like there need to be more bomb drops and opportunities to use Cheer. Maybe I'm missing something. Game systems contradict each other. You're encouraged to destroy ships as quickly as possible (not letting ANY enemies escape), but sucking up all onscreen medals requires you to stop firing. Enemies have crazy fast blue shots, and many of them come at you from behind where you cannot easily attack them. Or maybe I just suck. I'm mad cuz bad. NPC radio chatter is insipid and nonsensical for the most part. Credit feeding still lets you get achievements. Then they aren't really achievements, are they? Here's something I like: Being able to quit to the menu, and then continue from the stage I left off in the campaign. I appreciate that feature. All I can think of now, sorry. --- MOSS! Where the heck is Raiden 2 and DX on Steam, huh? Legacy had 1 and the Jet trilogy. Now you want to just re-release the Jet trilogy? They're great, and I love them, but come on.
This game has backseat gaming built in. While you're trying to stay alive and shoot stuff down, there are a bunch of characters incessantly giving you unnecessary instructions and otherwise spewing a battery of stream-of-consciousness rubbish at you. It's comical. There are literally characters just talking the entire time. I don't care! Let me shoot ♥♥♥♥!
wouldn't recommend came back to this after seeing i had barely play and just a few minute into the game i realize why, keyboard mapping is non existant you either play with the 3 default setting or your out of luck and will have to break your hand to play this.Game also don't support any controller which is frankly baffling for a game coming out in 2017 and more so a director cut edition. Skip and play on mobile or something ain't worth the cash here.
It's like Raiden IV but far worse. The music and combat effects are not balanced. I had to turn up the music really high just to hear it. It's full of tiny awful levels followed by boss fights. The backgrounds are poor and pass buy at weird speeds. You're forced to sit through endless dialog that is voiced over. Sometimes you can't see what's ahead of you because it's covered in text. You can't turn off the text. You can turn the voice channel to zero. It has infinite continues and local cooperative play which I really appreciate. There isn't a price low enough to make up for the detractors to this game. I almost believe that this was just some poorly made phone game. It's a garbage game that destroys Raiden's good name.
Awesome shoot'em up! What else to say?
Paint-by-numbers arcade shoot-em-up. Does very little to stand out from its genre peers, and what gameplay merits it does possess are marred by the poor art direction -- the copious enemy projectile frequently being hard to see and thus dodge -- and the almost non-stop anime banter running in the background of every single stage. 4/10
great spaceship game, with story/narrative very interesting. APPROVED
