I like it quite a bit but cannot in good conscience recommend it, mostly because a better version called Jamestown+ is available. The positives are an original steampunk setting, pretty pixel graphics, up to 4 player coop mode and very precise controls. Picking up those cogs when enemies explode is fun... and dangerous. The limited-time shield adds strategy. However, the negatives are a short campaign, frustrating progression system and that newer, better version available with two more levels and extra improvements. To challenge the fourth level, you need to replay and beat the three previous ones at a higher difficulty level (Difficult). To unlock the fifth and last level, you need to replay and beat the previous four levels at a higher difficulty level (Legendary). If you even manage to do that, which most people won't, the last level is very tough with moving blocks, and the final boss has two different phases. I barely managed to beat his first phase and gave up on the second. So this is a good abeit frustrating shoot 'em up, but you're better off getting Jamestown+ when it's at least 50% off.

------------------------- Looking at the list of games that I started OVER TEN YEARS AGO (!!!!) on Steam and never finished, I found this game, I decided to play a little to refresh my memory: it's a very classic "spaceship" and "bullet rain" game, but it works well, it has its own story and styles, it's not the type of game that I like (I probably got it in a bundle), but I certainly recognize its quality, even so many years after its release.
got this game back in 2011, decided to play it on my Deck and just crashes to desktop. Apparently the issue has been around for a while now and the devs have a plus version out and did not bother to fix this vesion.
Getting 100% was only possible for me by slowing down the game's speed, otherwise close to impossible. approximate amount of time to 100%: 10-20+h (Highly skill dependent) Estimated achievement difficulty: 9/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 5 maps(multiple difficulties each) + 30 challenges + 1 gauntlet (5 multiple difficulties) Multiplayer achievements: YES!!! - requires 4 players*. Missable achievements: YES!!. Grinding Achievements: No. DLC-Only achievements: No*. Time-gated achievements: No. Speed-run achievements: No. RNG-achievements: No. Does difficulty affect achievements: Yes, each map and gauntlet has to be completed on all difficulties. Unobtainable/glitched achievements: No. First achievement unlock: Finish the first map or get a high enough combo. Eta 5 minutes. Notes: * The game can be played in 4 player coop using controllers or extra mice/keyboards. (just continue and revive the 3 motionless ships) * You can COOP this game. It makes the game a lot easier and only one or two achievements require single player. * While there are no DLC related achievements, there are arguably better ships available for purchase. * The hardest difficulties are impossible (at least for me). Had to slow the game down and it was still hellish * The effects and colors are overwhelming and in this game where a pixel can get you killed it's overwhelming, with minor ways to turn it off. If you want to just play it with friends then the game is a good intro to bullet hell, but if you care about achievements then... Not Recommended.
Jamestown is a game that I was enjoying for the most part. It's a sprite based schmup that I bought many years ago, and completely forgot about. My wife and I were playing some games on the Steam Deck and I came across it. We had a good go, going so far as the final level. My overall opinion on the is very all over the place. First thing I'll say about the game is that it looks great. I love the sprites of the character, ships and the enemies. They're all full of detail and have a lot of vibrant colours. The same can be said for the levels mostly. The first four in particular are quite varied and score quite highly for the art direction. On top of this, I really enjoyed the music. I personally would have preferred higher quality and maybe a little bit more oomph. But what is in the game is well done. I particularly loved the music in the fourth level. The pounding metallic rhythm was a killer tune to play to. The game play loop of the game is where things start going wrong. For the most part, the game plays well. You fly through the game and shoot everything in sight. You collect these gold bolts that give you a shield and strengthen your firepower. These features all work great. Where it all goes wrong however is the hit boxes. There's been a number of occasions where my character died after being hit by something a noticeable distance from the ship. Naturally this is very frustrating. Now, when you die. The game will spawn you back where you left off. This is until you hit the final level. This level is pretty tight, full of traps and enemies. It's hard enough as it is but when you die, this respawn feature doesn't drop you off where you left off. It instead (for whatever reason) dumps you at the opposite end of the screen, usually in the middle of enemies that haven't been cleared out. This naturally causes a couple of lives to be lost and ruins the play through. I had a number of runs ruined by this. Which is a shame because it's a okay enough level, for the most part. I had a number of hits that had me die because I couldn't find the character on the bloody screen. There wasn't a lot of thought put into that final level. Another thing I don't like is how the difficulty works. To progress through the game, you have to finish the game on legendary difficulty. Then for the final level, you have to finish all four on the next level. You only get three areas on normal difficulty, which is a load of bollocks. This is an okay game but not everyone has the reaction skills to play those higher levels and it would have scored much higher had the game been more accessible to a wider range of players. This of course will "trigger" people who grew up in the Souls era where difficulty is everything. I don't care. You've got a great game that needs to be toned down just a smidgen. I also had a control issue where my character who fly off to the right of the screen and stop reacting. I had to shut the game down a few times before the controls would respond. I don't know what that was about but again, it ruined a number of runs on that final level. Talking of the final level. It's hard. There's a hell of a lot of enemies on the screen, which is to be expected. But for whatever reason, the developers made the levels not like the other four. This one is cramped corridors. The problem here is, the walls are so dark. It's hard to see where you're going. There's just too much crap going on on top of that. It was an okay level once I had it memorised but to me it feels a little rushed. Then you get the final boss. It was fine enough. The typical bullet hell boss. But then, he has a second form! How edgy and creative. At this point, I just rolled my eyes and turned it off. I have no time for multi stage bosses. I knew fine I didn't have enough health to do it and it was losing my interest. It was a fair disappointment that the game couldn't just give you a win but instead pulled that tired cheap trope out of its butt. Now, I just came on to write this review and I have discovered that this game is pretty much abandoned by the developers. It certainly explains a lot. On top of that, they've released Jamestown+. A newer updated version of the game. Kind of makes you feel robbed. Why would anyone want to buy a second copy of the game? Just fix this one, for crying out loud. I'm sure people could get fun out of Jamestown but I only recommend it if it's on sale. There's clearly much to like about it but it has some issues.
This game hasn't run on any PC I have owned since the release of Jamestown+. I feel like my only option to play the game that I own is to purchase it a second time at full price.
Would I recommend this game to other players? The short answer to that question is: Hell yeah with out a doubt. What is good about the game? Everything. What is bad? Nothing. Get it now. Nothing else to say, you witness it yourself and be thankful that Jamestown exists on this Earth for us, Humans.
