A 3-4 hour journey through an RPG-flavored museum of bad game design and worse puns. A meditation on the rites of passage that define a veteran gamer. A hot fudge sundae whose ice cream is the platonic form of a game and whose hot fudge is literal hot fudge that I spilled all over my keyboard.

I really enjoyed this game. It took me about 4 hours to complete it after searching every nook and cranny for all the loots and exploring the entire map. I managed to beat the game with lvl 13 characters, which i am assuming will be about average level for the end. I have managed to figure out 8 of the 11 achievements now after having played a total of 8 hours, but can't work oout how to get the last 3. I have a feeling 1 is to reach 1m coin and another is to reach level 20, but i have no clue what the third could be or if my guesses are even right!! The story does seem a little short, but it is very well put together and if you have a good sense of humour, you will enjoy almost every moment of it! I would post the achievements i have managed to get, but that may ruin the fun for others, despite the last 3 i havn't unlocked bugging me as badly as it is!! I didnt even realise it was only released 2 days ago, 1 day before i bought it, until i looked at the store page after i completed the game. lol EDIT: Now i have 10 of the 11 Achievements. Started a new story and managed to get another 2 by accident. I had my doubt on there being an achievement to reach a certain level, but i am confident on the possibility of reaching 1m coins. I will post an achievements list below when i unlock the last one IF i can work out how to black it out for spoiler reasons for those who dont want to view them. EDIT 2: Finally have all of the achievements. Fastest time to complete the game for me was about 85 minutes, reaching level 9. The last one wasn't what i expected it to be. Here is an achievement list for those that want to get all the achievements. If you don't want spoilers, dont hover over the blackness to see what the achievements are :) NOTE: they are all in order of completion, so if you want to get them all in 1 save, do them in the order they are listed. AGAIN, SPOILERS!!! (ACHIEVEMENT LIST)
1. Self-Abusive Gamism - 20 attempts in the fair at the beginning of the game (missable) 2. Sk1llz - Get the the end room of one of the spider caves, rescue the person and get back out, without facing any of the spiders along the way, except the boss spider at the end in the second town (missable) 3. Completionism - Reach all of the endings in the book in Princess Foof's Bedroom 4. All of the Idiots - Collect all 3 followers; Tonk, Princess Foof and Torovosimir, respectively 5. Scorpion-Based Fast Travel System - After collecting all 3 gems in the 3rd town (desert), run into a scorpion to teleport back to the entrance. 6. Tell us Again, Grandad - Die to the dragon 3 times (missable) (this was the last achievement for me to get, coz i was always 3 magic characters and Tonk on phys, so i countered the dragon easily) 7. h4x - Fix all of the game issues (and possibly collect all 3 cheat notes, not sure) (missable if you need to collect the cheat notes as well) 8. What are you Doing Here? - Return to where you fought the dragon, after you have fixed the airship and open the chest. 9.M-my Destiny - Resturn to the 3rd town (desert) and chat with the 'poorly translated' speaking character after you have recieved 'Admin status' 10. Special Snowflake - When you reach the final room, leave the castle instead of proceeding to the final boss battles. 11. 99% Completion - Beat the end game bosses
The most common pitfall in satire is being so focused on making fun of your source material’s weaknesses that you unknowingly ape them in your pursuit of taking the piss. Imagine, then, my annoyance at watching Rage Quest: The Worst Game saunter casually head-first into such a trap in its opening minutes. Playing the role of a snarky self-aware protagonist dipping their toes into a RPGMaker game to see if it’s worth their time, Ivy complains that a long, boring, unskipable cinematic used as a plot dump has rolled on so long that the burrito she’d left in the microwave is probably cold by now. It could be labelled a funny set-up, humour is subjective and all that, but it still makes you sit through a long, boring, unskipable cinematic to make the joke that long, boring, unskipable cinematics are, like, the worst. This is probably the lowest point of Rage Quest, and it happens in the opening minutes. It’s not until a few hours later that you realise that this was a set up for a much better constructed joke, and it certainly takes a gamble on the player hanging around long enough to see all the pay-offs. Before its four hour or so lifespan is over, Rage Quest will jump head first into many a JRPG trope to mock it from the very belly of the beast, all while proudly displaying the rage quit button in the options screen. It outright dares you to press it, throwing dodgy escort missions, unclear puzzle objectives, bad camera angles and overlong animations for spells at you to test your patience. But Rage Quest grows into its satire, not really bearing its full focus on decades old clichés like you might initially expect, but instead using well-worn mechanical issues and awful design choices to attack you from brand new angles. There’s a boss fight that issues a party-wide counterattack every time it’s physically struck. Not a problem; just take it on using only your arsenal of spells and attack items. Except, you can’t; your moronic fighter is too dumb to follow commands, so his every action is to wade bravely into battle and start slashing ♥♥♥♥ up unprompted. Another dungeon is filled with roaming enemies who fling you back to the start of the crawl if they touch you. Usually, not a problem; they patrol in easily predictable patterns and sneaking your way through them shouldn’t be that much of an issue. But the camera angle is set too far back, offering awful visibility and forcing you to stroll into the waiting claws of many a beast you could not see until it was far too late.
Hilarious example of how to handle parody games RIGHT. Excellent writing, good pacing, and superb price make this a must buy for an comedy or RPG fan.
https://youtu.be/9nUnSg9e8SE Holy CRAP. I can’t remember the last time a game, besides something Crankage Games cooked up, got me to laugh so hard I was crying. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started up this game, but the meta ‘game within a game’ and then never taking itself seriously was amazing. You start the game innocently enough, but it quickly becomes apparent that Ivy (you) is the only sane and logical character in a world FULL of badly written NPCs and horrible camera angles. Eventually you manage to get the upper hand on the world. I won’t spoil anything, but how you fix the airship is nothing short of genius, both in actual GOOD game design and comedy. The main draw of this game is that you are a player PLAYING another game...an RPG Maker game that is filled with bad design choices, copy & pasted maps, and terribly written sections that smack of a developer that is too full of himself. But that’s just it...it’s SUPPOSED to come off as pretentious and full of itself! It ticks off all the boxes of a bad game, but does so in such a subversive and meaningful way, that you almost forget it’s a game poking FUN at those sorts of things, until you hit the punchline and just sit there in awe, holding your sides. Parody games (and to an extent, games where you are self-aware) are delicate things to get right. Too obtuse, and no one will get the joke. Too blatant, and people find it boring and unfunny for ‘trying too hard’. I dunno what the developer, Kyle, was doing to come up with this masterpiece, but he struck gold. Easily one of the best RPG Maker games, and easily the best parody game I’ve ever played. By attacking the designs, and not the tropes, it’s a fresh take on what can be a stale topic. +Hilariously takes jabs at itself and other games for common ‘bad’ design choice +Doesn’t overstay its welcome, and plot moves along at an excellent pace +Every Inn’s name is a pun, and that’s just Inn-credible +Excellent price =Dragon Boss was somewhat difficult and annoying, taking several tries (and a dead Tonk) to finally down. Unsure if intentional or not. Clever girl -There was only ONE Choose Thine Destiny book
Ever play Final Fantasy 1 (NES Classic) ? Then you will definitely love this game. Definitely got humor Multi Party Class Game Select Items even in combat I only got 1hr into game but i am loving it (PS. I dont write too many reviews of a game haha)
Worst game ever, won't play again 10/10
Fun and very meta. It picks at some tropes of bad game design, but in doing so, uses them on purpose. It's a little frustrating, but fun. The monsters have some good flavor text, but the combat gets old once you read all of it. There's a few small puzzles that I really liked, except for one designed to be opaque. As for level-grinding, grind a little bit right at the start and you won't need to worry ever again. The game scales well and is only about 3-4 hours. Overall, a fun little game!
False Advertising. NOT the worst game ever. Actually pretty awesome. Not too long, not too short, just right. fun, punny, witty. Reccomend buying it right now!
SHORT VERSION: Buy this game if: A: You laughed at the jokes in the screenshot, trailer, and store page. B: You're okay with a game that's fairly light on combat mechanics, though there are some tough bits. Don't buy this game if: A: You didn't laugh at any of the jokes, because that's the main point of the game. B: You don't want to deal with jokey bad mechanics. Each one is brief and I thought they were funny, but I finished Enchanted Arms, From Software's most sinister gauntlet. LONG VERSION: MY PROGRESS: I've completed the game. The 3-4 hour estimate is accurate. STRENGTHS: - Jokes This is subjective, but I laughed a lot. I think this game rises above other games like it in two main ways. 1. It has a wide variety of jokes beyond "Man, this game sucks, huh?". I particularly enjoyed ZOGAR'S MURDERARIUM and the one-off NPC dialogue, but even combat has some pretty solid one-liners. 2. Instead of being a part of the universe, the main character is someone who got bored and started playing the game while waiting for their burrito to cook in the microwave. That distance means that when the joke is that the game sucks, Ivy's commentary is earnestly frustrated instead of cynical, which keeps the overall tone of the game jokey instead of too cool for itself. - Stability and Performance Despite the subject matter, the game ran perfectly fine on my machine, which is nice. It's a strong machine, but y'know, RPGMaker. WEAKNESSES: - Click here if you're stuck on the flower puzzle:
You have to buy a saw from the shop, and there's a barrel in town that you can roll up to the house.
OVERALL: It's a far better investment of money and time than the vast majority of comedy movies out there. Check it out!
LOOK, I did get gifted the game by a dear friend BUT - i would have HAPPILY paid for it. This was FUN (remember when games did that). Everything that makes you go oh yeah i remember that meme about games - its here but better, on the nose without being obnoxious. Its short enough to not be grinding but long enough to do everything it set out to do. Its actually a good game (even including its deliberately placed "flaws") and nails the humour. (on Bat fact is wrong [citation needed]). Honestly this is just a hidden gem, anything under about $10 - $15 you are doing yourself a dis-service to not just have a good time. You pay $25 to go see a terrible movie for 2 hours, this gives you a lot of fun for MINIMUM 4 if you have a good muck around, i took 6! Enjoy it, embrace it, buy it. We need more game devs like this one, and more games like this one. Support what you want to see in the industry, spend the change to pick it up.
2 hours later here are my thoughts. Rage Quest is a satire about game development. It pokes fun at all the bad things developers do during the process of making a game. Cheap copy/paste, overly long unskippable scenes, bad camera positioning... all the stuff that'd make your rage. The game does a good job of injecting comedy about these things while being intentional in the game. The game doesn't take itself too seriously and brings players on a ride through puns and horrible mechanics while using a solid RPG experience. Bonus for the first-person style combat opposed to "party style" most developers use for this. Things you should gripe about? -- No controller support. I believe any RPG Maker title should support it. The title screen bad pixelization I'm not sure if it was part of the joke or not but that just looks odd to me. Looks even worse on the larger window sizes. At $2.99 USD the game is right in line with similar titles so I feel you will get your money's worth. The game overall works for what it was designed for, so I'd say go get it and laugh at the developer poking fun at his own industry.
