About
R-Type Delta is one of the finest shoot ‘em ups ever and took the gaming world by storm upon its release in 1998. Now, 27 years later, history repeats itself with R-Type Delta HD Boosted. With its tight level design, three selectable ships, powerful Delta Attacks, and the brilliant Force mechanic, this new edition proves that gaming classics of this caliber are truly timeless. If you played R-Type Delta back in the day, this is the perfect opportunity to return to its dark science fiction action. If you've never experienced this essential piece of gaming history before, now is the time.
R-Type Delta HD Boosted features high-resolution graphics that hone the polygonal edges of this PlayStation masterpiece until they’re sharp enough to cut glass. You simply haven’t experienced R-Type Delta until you've played it in high definition! Of course, the game also comes equipped with modern quality-of-life improvements.
What has always made R-Type Delta so fantastic is its dark, eerie atmosphere. Shoot-'em-ups are not typically known for storytelling, but R-Type Delta HD Boosted excels with its simple, minimalist environmental storytelling, characteristic of the late ’90s. It’s a narrative that is as fascinating as it is unsettling, as adrenaline-pumping as it is deeply disturbing. And all this without a single word being spoken.
The name “Delta” carries several meanings. Firstly, the Greek letter delta resembles a triangle, which coincidentally has as many sides as there are playable ships in the game. It is also the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, and R-Type Delta is the fourth game in the R-Type series. Additionally, the delta triangle is the simplest type of polygon, which is fitting since R-Type Delta was the first game in the series to use three-dimensional polygon graphics instead of two-dimensional sprites.
The year is 2163, and the badly damaged R9 Arrowhead fighter has just returned to Earth after its mission to destroy the Bydo Empire. The vessel is rescued by the battle-cruiser Croque-Monsieur and transported to an orbital space station. One year later, astronomers in Central Asia observe mysterious objects falling from the sky, and moments later, control is lost over the orbiting annihilation platform Moritz-G. This high-tech machine, capable of destroying the entire planet, descends over a city and levels it to the ground. Although its planet-destroying weapons have not yet been activated, its advanced defense systems make Moritz-G virtually impossible to approach. A desperate military operation is launched, and the prototype ship R9aII Delta is deployed to resolve the situation. Thus begins the epic battle that is R-Type Delta!
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? Well, I enjoyed the original, and at first sight I would have said this PC-port is a masterpiece. When you play a bit longer, though, you find out that there is content (like enemies) missing from the original. The game is not an emulation of the old PlayStation title, but has been completely remade based on the old source code. The whole source code was not available. So, did they simply leave out what was not here to port? I fear it looks that way. Anyway, what is here is good. R-Type Delta, the fourth installment of the series, previously exclusive to PlayStation 1, is now finally available for PC and consoles. The original R-Type is one of the most influential horizontal shooters of all time. Released by IREM in 1987 for arcades, the game was ported to various home computers (excellent on the C-64, and almost as good as in the arcade on the Amiga, where Chris Hülsbeck's iconic soundtrack came out of the speakers). The series continued over the years, with R-Type 2 (1989) followed by R-Type Leo (1992), R-Type III: The Third Lightning (1993, SNES), and finally R-Type Delta (1998, PlayStation). This millennium saw the addition of the three parts of R-Type Final. The series revolves around an intergalactic war between humans and the Bydo, a powerful alien race consisting of both biological life forms and mechanical structures. The bosses in the R-Type series are absolutely legendary in their design. In almost all games, the R-9 Arrowhead combat spacecraft (or a variation thereof) was your ship. R-Type Delta was the first to use 3D polygon graphics instead of classic sprites, which was almost mandatory for PlayStation games at the time. In 1998, 2D was dead, and almost all new releases tried their hand (with varying degrees of success) at 3D. This worked really well for R-Type Delta, as the gameplay remained very similar to its predecessors. The backstory is quickly told. It is the year 2163, and Earth is once again on the brink of destruction. Humans have lost control of the Moritz-G space station, and it is about to set to work destroying Earth. A major city has already been destroyed, so the R9 Delta prototype (or you can choose the R13 and the RX) must get to work and stop the attackers. As usual, we fly from left to right on an automatically scrolling screen and attack our enemies with our cannon. Regularly appearing extras give us additional firepower. The first extra is always the legendary indestructible Force (a kind of satellite), which we can dock either at the front or rear of our spaceship and which then serves as a shield, or which we can detach, whereupon it fights enemies independently (but we no longer have a shield). We can call it back at any time. So you always have to decide how to use the Force most effectively in each section. If you lose a life, all extras are gone and the Force is always the first new extra to appear. The very different enemies are, as usual, vicious and don't hold back, always firing very accurately at our current location. In order to progress, it is essential to memorize the enemy waves. If you don't know who appears when and where, you won't get very far – as with practically every classic shmup. If you hold down the fire button longer, your cannon will charge up and allow you to fire a particularly powerful shot – this is also a weapon that has been around since the first R-Type game. Incidentally, another fire button is assigned to continuous fire – so you don't have to press the button like crazy to fire, as you once had to do in the arcade. A special feature of R-Type Delta is the Delta Force. It charges slowly and can then be fired by pressing another button (Y by default). Depending on where the Force is currently located, you can use it to unleash a devastating attack in the middle of enemy territory while the R9 is at a safe distance. The levels are relatively short, but the challenge lies in surviving them. A single hit is enough to lose a life. And with the loss of a life, all collected extra weapons (force, missiles, smaller escort ships, and various special weapons) are also gone. Even if you can continue playing shortly before your death (if you still have a life), the rest of the level becomes significantly more difficult. By the way, there are no speed-up extras, but you can accelerate your ship with L1 and slow it down with L2. You have five continues and three lives at your disposal. R-Type Delta still plays like a classic shmup, before the later (bullet-hell) Cave shooters with their endless numbers of enemy projectiles. In the R-Type Delta HD Boosted version, the old 3D graphics have been upscaled to HD and are now razor sharp on 4K screens. The soundtrack has been expanded to include alternative tracks. There is a new training mode, and various screen resolutions are supported. Conclusion: R-Type Delta lives up to its reputation as one of the best shoot 'em ups of all time in the HD Boosted version. It was about time someone ported the old PlayStation classic to new systems. Unfortunately the port seems to be not 100% complete compared to the original. Well, what is here is good. What is not good is the atrocious regional pricing - it seems the game is only intended for players from the rich part of the world, since the prices in the poorer regions are more or less the same. Only Brazil gets it a half price.
This is a perfect modern R-Type game. It's far more balanced than its successors - the Final series - because there are far fewer ships, so the stages always feel fair no matter which one you're using. That you could adjust your speed on the fly in an era when shmups still had you collecting speed power ups was a godsend. The addition of the Dose attack, acting as a smart bomb, is a nice feature too for when you get into tight spots. The graphics are good for a PlayStation game and look nice in HD. I've noticed some minor changes to enemy placement from the original game, but so minor that it's a non issue. The soundtrack is outstanding. Not my favorite R-Type game, as that still belongs to Final, but this one is far more fair and is a gold standard for the genre. At the price point we're getting, there's no reason not to jump in. Highly recommended.

It does not work on Linux properly . On Steamdeck it works without any audio using proton GE / CachyOS versions . on Arch it works but I can't get past the first cut-scene.
