I’m always intrigued by games that some people claim ‘aren’t really games’. This ‘non-game’ from 2013 - I think it is game, if only because of the physical nature of my connection to it, via the Steam Deck in my hand, and its controls - is a very beautiful poem of a game about the changing seasons, the life cycle and death. You walk about a gorgeous island, looking. Just looking. It’s a walking simulator without any puzzles or mysteries to solve (aside, perhaps, from abstract philosophical ones), or any narrative to unravel. It’s slow, contemplative and just what I needed as a bit of respite from an intense game I’m currently trying to complete. This calmed my nerves and relaxed me after a restless night. I love video games.
A musical nature walk, at its essence. The elements of the soundtrack change depending on where you are, how you move, what you see. Fully playable on the Steam Deck!
Maybe this hit me in the best time of my life for it, but this game has become an instant classic for me. I remember when this came out, but only started playing it now, and my goodness I'm better for it. I've never had a game this instantly and effortlessly evoke the sublime wanderlust that I feel when I'm birdwatching, watching meteor showers, or just wandering through the woods. Fully recommend, especially if you miss being able to do those as much in the real world as you once could
Meditative exploration game that doesn't hold your hand and puts you into a Zen-like flow state. To be played when you're in the right frame of mind.
Is this what heaven feels like?
A beautiful, atmospheric yet simple experience
I've been using Proteus to calm down before bed and i can tell you now, its awesome. I especially like, my friend, the boing stone who lives on the mountain.
