Wow. I don't even want better graphics. The graphics are fine, and not really the point of this. This is a game in which actually knowing some football theory will pay dividends. I hope that this succeeds like the famous baseball sim that we all know about, and ends up with all historical teams accurately evaluated and available. Because the game play itself already seems top notch and well-interfaced. When I first tried it, briefly, I didn't read carefully enough and didn't at first appreciate the power of this simulation. But on a second attempt I read more carefully, was a bit more patient with it, and now I'm a believer: NO WAY I'd refund this now.
This game scratches an itch more than any other football game out there. It's not pretty, and there are some pretty big limitations baked into it, but it somehow captures my imagination like Tecmo Super Bowl did back when I was a kid. Plenty of stats, and the AI seems a lot better in the 2021 version. The season and game stats that come out of the simulations are realistic when compared to actual NFL games and seasons when you use. Note: you don't control the onscreen sprites with a controller, they are just animations of the simulation outcomes. It has very, very low CPU/RAM/video usage. That's perfect for a game to pick at in your spare moments during a work day, kind of like Solitaire. But way better. It isn't licensed by NFL, but you can import a custom league made by a member of the community. There are fictional leagues, all-time great leagues etc etc made by the fans. You pick the play, the game simulates the outcome. You can simulate and/or call the plays through each season, there are offseason activities like freeagency (fairly crude at them moment) and a draft, player and team development, etc etc Customize teams and leagues, import, edit leagues, mods etc etc Keep in mind this game is developed by ONE person along with community feedback and testing.. Knowing that makes this game even more special. It's funky in its own way but it is my favorite football game of all time.
This game isn't very good. I'm expecting a detailed football simulation game, but it's just not realistic. An example of this is that when you are passing, your options are short pass, medium pass, long pass, or screen pass. All screen passes go to the running back (no wide receiver screens). If you want to call a medium pass, you have options of different medium routes for all receivers. However, actual football offenses typically have a mix of long, medium, and short routes on each play, with a progression of reads. Offenses seem to use the 1990's pro set as the common formation, despite it not having been common in the NFL for years. It's no where near enough details for this to produce an accurate, detailed simulation.
If you like football history and like simulations, this game is for you. I love setting up classic matchups and I'm working on setting up an all-time tournament. Plus, if you like Tecmo Super Bowl it has the same kind of look, but with better graphics. Once you get the mods there are so many possibilities. Very satisfied.
Love this game! Reminds me of MicroLeague football. Awesome value and great mods. If you like stat based football it's a must buy.
I've played this game on & off for about 10 years now. Each year there is a new version released, and they each get more in-depth. While the football plays could be considered a but dated, this is a "coach's dream" game. No fastest finger here, just management and play-calling, scouting, tendencies, etc. I play mostly on the PC but there is a smartphone version as well.
Quality game. Lots of room to enhance for future versions-- graphics, sounds, depth charts, full rosters. But the base of the game is pretty good. Ratings should be broadened instead of 0-9, maybe make it 0-20 or 0-50 to better differentiate between eras.
Excellent immersive and statistically realistic in game NFL coaching simulator. Unlike Madden there is no rubber band AI here. Plus the benefit of an active Dev who makes qualitative improvements with each years edition. No gimmicks. Excellent mod community (find any team from any era). Highly recommend
Imagine what the old Microleague Football games on IBM or the old Super Bowl Sunday Games on Commodore 64 would look like in modern times. I love this game; it's probably the best overall football sim on the planet (especially since the FOF and OOTP project fell through). This game is a hybrid of Front Page Sports Football Pro, Action Football PC, Tecmo bowl, Microleague Football, Madden, and probably every great football game that came before it. There's a great deal of customization and so many ways you can play. Buy it.
Just my opinion... This an in-between game, for those that kinda like stats and kinda like graphics. But, unfortunately does not deliver much of either and is mediocre at both. Nothing near the detailed stats and management level of the Front Office Football or Football Mogul series, and the graphics, by themselves, remind me of Atari football of the '80's. I think there is a lot of effort here by the Dev's, but if it is going to live up to it's name (Strategy) it needs a LOT more management capabilities. There is a tiny glimpse of strategy in Free Agent and collage draft and virtually none during the season. The screens are a bit awkward to move about and overall the game just left me frustrated looking for ways to interact with my team, it's finances, trades, scouting, and drafting. I don't think this is a matter of tweaks, but more of a massive opening up of the data, reports, details, and capabilities of the manager during a season to allow for actual strategy. Or a massive improvement to Madden like visuals. As it is now, it's a dud. First review on a game I did not like, but I do hope for improvements :)
