Play solo or up to three player local co‑op.
There are no checkpoints, no retries, and no safety nets — just your skill, your ammo, and your ability to manage resources as the levels get harder.

Firstly, all of the positive reviews for this game are made by friends of the developer and have hardly any time played in-game, check for yourself. Since making this review I have also been spammed with harassment requests and messages by not only the developer but also 2 other players who are on his friends list. Steam Support has been notified of this. The developer tried to get my review banned, and since that didn't work he has made up a story in the developers comment section, but I'll leave the reader to make up their own minds. But for the sake of transparency, this review has been checked by official Steam moderators and it has been given approval. I've had a terrible experience with this and I thoroughly regret purchasing the game. Thankfully I am able to get a refund which I have applied for. The game failed to load repeatedly and when it did, it was just a black screen. I FINALLY was able to speak to the developer behind the game and I was amazed at the rudeness I received from him when I asked for assistance. He repeatedly told me that he is no longer working on this game and so the game will not work on certain machines because he refuses to patch this dead game. Fair enough, so I told him I will refund it, which apparently made him extremely angry and he accused me of wasting his time. I am of mixed colour despite being born in the UK (same country as this white developer) and when I was conversing with him I had a profile picture of myself up so anyone could see I was mixed race. The developer brought my skin colour into the conversation and told me that it was all my fault because I am foreign and do not understand English. He went on to say some other things relating to my race which I refuse to even type out here. I just wish steam allowed you to put screenshots with reviews so I could show how disgracefully I was treated when trying to get some help by the developer to get this game running. But with the angry/racist developer aside, this game simply does not run and goes to a black screen. I have many other games and triple A titles which I have zero issues with running, on max settings etc. Many thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope this does not effect anybody else.
Hello Mr Hamilton. Thank you for making the game easier. I have managed to complete Classic and Retro and managed to get to 100 level on Renaissance twice. Am determined to complete this one as well. My partner is still struggling with all of the games though. Thank you again. Ann Sitzia.
A unique take on the classic arcade game Breakout!, with elements of Asteroids in it along with RPG elements (a store system). Overall I found this to be a pretty fun game, and rather challenging at some points. I haven't played the multiplayer mode yet, but once I do I will most likely update or add a new review for that portion.
This game is one of best classic games There few classic games that actually works and fun And this one is one of of it's type
PowBall Renaissance is an excellent 2D retro breakout with two modes of play; i.e. single player & local multiplayer. There are several power ups that are activated by breaking bricks, and some of which can also be purchased via the shop that is accessible at the end of every level. Some of the bricks you destroy turn into collectable power ups; however these have a limited time span, so you must hit them as soon as possible to gain the power up. Before they disappear they will start to flash; giving you some warning of their demise. To use the shop you have to collect crystals (called alchemites) that appear when you destroy bricks, enemies, asteroids or space saucers. Each crystal collected is worth ten alchemites. The local multiplayer mode can be played against bots or up to two other players; or, you can play cooperatively. If the cooperative mode is switched off, it will require each player to have a ball in play and turns on friendly fire when using either the rockets, lasers and bullets There are three control options when playing multiplayer using the Arrow keys, WASD & Mouse; plus a fourth if you set up a game controller. There are three difficulty levels i.e., easy, normal & hard. The difference between each appears to be in the speed of the game; (I have yet to confirm this). Each of the modes has four level sets, i.e. Classic, Renaissance, Retro & Custom. The Custom levels are created using the in game level editor. I've not completed any of the level sets yet, nor used the level editor, however, there at at least 300 pre-made levels to keep you occupied for a reasonable amount of game play time. As for the custom levels; I don't know if the set is limitless or confined to 100 levels. I also do not know how easy it is to use the level editor yet; however, after briefly checking it out, and having used many other breakout level editors, it appears to be standard fare and should be relatively easy to figure out. When you first start the game, there's a very basic tutorial that indicates what you should hit, collect or avoid when playing. You can set up to five different profiles, but you can only select one level set for each profile; you cannot swap between level sets in the same profile. If you wish to change to a different level set from the same profile you have to wipe your progress via the main menu. Progress is sequential and you cannot restart a previous level from the same profile unless you've lost all of your ships; in which case you have to start from level one again. Once you've earned enough alchemites, you can purchase several different items via the shop that include up to 50 standard issue mining balls, 99 shells for the cannon, 99 fuel cells for the plasma cannon, 50 high explosive unguided fragmentation rockets and a limited number of extra mining ships (the bat). When in standard mode i.e. when no weapon is selected, each time you press LMB it will launch another mining ball; you can have as many mining balls in play as you have in your store; however, once you get more than three or four in play, it becomes very difficult to keep them all in play. There is an achievement for launching 50 mining balls in the same level; however, it's quite difficult to get this achievement unless you allow most balls to miss the ship on their first bounce back because it's more than likely you'll have destroyed every brick before you've managed to launch all 50 mining balls. You can also mod the game; there's access to an help screen via the main menu to start modding the game; however, the developer does recommend you have some technical knowledge of modding if you wish to mod the game If you don't own a mouse with sensitivity controls there's also the ability to adjust the mouse sensitivity from 1% to 100%. The default setting is 50%. From the options menu you can adjust the sound quality, toggle screen shake, as well as enemy outlines, tips, & controller rumble. To change the mouse sensitivity while in game use PgUp & PgDn. To change weapons, use RMB to scroll between the standard ship, ballistic cannon, plasma cannon or rockets. To fire each weapon or additional mining balls use LMB and to move use the Left & Right axis of the mouse. If you are playing single player, the control option defaults to the mouse. From the options menu there appears to be an option to select a game controller as an alternative; however, because I don't use controllers, I've not been able to check this out. There are 20 Steam achievements or 60 level set achievements to collect; i.e, 20 for each of the non custom sets. These 20 achievements are duplicated for each level set; though I haven't checked to see if they are available for the custom set. Achievements are awarded for: Collecting alchemites Destroying enemies Having barely any shield left Clearing a level quickly Destroying asteroids ......Plus more Regarding the shield, some enemies fire weapons at your mining ship; unfortunately, too many hits will destroy your ship, so do avoid them if you can. Also, when side swiping asteroids and/or enemy space ships or other obstacles (which is necessary to gain one of the achievements as well as to create more alchemites). Unfortunately, too many hits will also destroy your ship. You can check the progress of the level set you are playing for each of the five profiles via the progress button in the main menu. This shows the achievements you have gained for each level set as well as what ammunition you have left, the number of lives (ships) and mining balls left, as well as the name of the level set; however, you are only awarded the Steam achievement once. You can wipe the progress from any profile if you wish to start the set from the beginning. There are leader boards for the global community as well as your friends, and you can check to see how you are fairing with respect to your progress at attaining the various achievements. PowBall Renaissance is a remake of the original PowBall by Anthony Hamilton, which has been freeware for many years. You can download the original from Caiman Games HERE; however all the levels from the original are included with Powball: Renaissance; still, you can play the original without having to boot up Steam and you'll see it in it's original retro graphic, (Yeah!). If you are not happy clicking on the above link via Steam, (I've been hacked in the past due to clicking a seemingly friendly link), you can find the game by Googling PowBall & Caiman Games. Or just Caiman Games, then clicking on the Breakout links via the left hand panel. There are 16 pages of free breakouts, each page listing 15 games. There's also a 3D Breakout section with 30 free 3D breakouts. Conclusion: PowBall Renaissance has all the elements of a playable and decent 2D breakout, with over 300 levels to beat. It's ideal for new and experienced players alike, thanks to the three difficulty levels and the level editor. The game doesn't bring anything new to the table that I've not seen before. I've purchased literally hundreds of these breakout arcade games over the many decades since I first played the original breakout that was an offshoot of the original Pong game. Breakout was created by Steve Wozniak and published by Atari back in the mid 1970's. If you love the old breakout/arkanoid games from the 70's & 80's, Powball: Renaissance will definitely scratch that itch some more. For the measly price of £3.99 (~$5), when not on sale, PowBall Renaissance is in my opinion a steal and worth buying at full price (if only to support the developer).
The developer seems to be a little confused about what experience they want to present to players. Full review: http://pixelpopnetwork.com.au/2018/05/powball-renaissance/
Welcome to PowBall Renaissance This isn't your classic Breakout game or Arkanoid, however, given that is has open endless possibilities of making your own levels, refusing to purchase upgraded ammunition for your weaponry and adjusting levels to that, you can pretty much play this game in any form or shape you want. Classic, Retro, Modern, or PowBall style. Make no mistake this game comes with over 300+ levels, including those from PowBall Deluxe, the original game for DOS/Windows. Good news, game runs perfectly smooth, higher resolution support, and even 4K if you are into that. Level Editor that lets you comprise your own set of master levels with gimmicks of your choice using what the game engine has provided. Perhaps the game may require a Workshop functionality so players can share their own level sets for others to play as a bonus (that is entirely up to steam if I am not mistaken). The gray news, some weapons have been depreciated from the classic original game. The gravitron weapon no longer exists, so you won't be able to manipulate a balls motion (though the fans still remain part of the gimmick), grenade launcher no longer exists (its functionality however, has been added to the rockets instead, allowing you to tilt them in a direction you see fit based on your movement). Coins down, alchemite up. You no longer get the fancy coins, so the natural resource of alchemite is your new best friend. It is up to you to decide whether the strategy between shop exploitation of selling/buying is an advantage here (game can be beaten without really buying anything). The combinational weapons (single, double, automatic) are gone as well and have been reduced to simply single shot machine gun and plasma. At this point I don't see a reason to have it, though upgrading back in the old one was nifty aside from losing the weapon along with your life which this logic luckily is not applied in this version, so die as much as you want. Rockets are plain warheads, the strongest of the three rocket types that used to be part of the game (Big Red, Yellow Jacket, Blue Warhead). Good news though, no friendly fire on you, as the explosion and shrapnel used to kill you on close range. Bad News, if any is strictly opinionated based on everyone's experience. This isn't your classic breakout, but perhaps it can be accommodated to your liking in some way. There is an editor after all, so making classic levels shouldn't be a strict problem. If you liked the original more than this, its free, but it is a low resolution game running at 320x200. Still playable, but nothing smoother than this one. It may not be an exact copy, but it sure is a better upgrade. I played DXBall, BeatBall series, as well as the original arkanoid. Each of these games have their own style and there are knock-offs! The only thing unique about each of these games is their gimmicks, powerups, physics, and maybe content, if any. I enjoyed this game very much and tend to continue to play it. Best of all it has multiplayer, so take that as you wish, supporting a variety of control types. Including your faithful minion...AI! ---Pro--- - 20 Achievements - 16 Unique Powerups (excluding some hidden special ones) - 100 Levels each for both Classic and Renaissance Set. - Arkanoid Level Set - Level Editor - Mod Menu / Editor (for Custom Graphics, Sound, Music)
Pure Nostalgie in frischem Gewand. Macht tatsächlich immer noch Spaß!
Renaissance is a fun reboot of the original game from 1997. You control a paddle, mining out gems from bricks using your mining ball (your ship's reactor) in typical arkanoid fashion. The levels may also contain enemies, hazards that manipulate the playfield, and powerups. Instead of just waiting for the ball to break everything, you can use weapons to help blast away the level. If the ball gets out of control, you can fire off more from your reserves instead of dealing with a speeding ball. You may also recollect them at the end of the level now, which is a nice touch, if they're heading back to you at the time. It's also useful given the slight "economic depression" the Rockhopper shop is going through. The main updates lie in the graphics and mechanics. You can play up to 3 players local coop, with up to 5 different paddle colors. You can even play with the AI now, though they leave you high and dry once the level finishes and the asteroids come! They are just as berserk as ever, shooting wildly while chasing the nearest ball. Fortunately you can turn off friendly fire as well as remove the need for one of each colored ball in play to survive (classic style). You no longer need to worry about purchasing or losing guns, only the ammo required to fire your machine guns, plasma, or missiles. The machine guns still push enemies and asteroids away from you, which is very helpful. That said, some variety has been removed, with the grenade launcher, ball manipulation (lol) of the graviton, different missile types, and ion accelerator absent. The missile launcher has inherited the momentum "flick" mechanic of the old grenades, allowing you to hit tough-to-hit bricks. There are design choices that make this tougher than the original: increased ammo consumption, a shop with limited inventory and money (and you no longer can sell your starting lives or save scum anyway), and shrinking your paddle whenever you swap to your weapons. The original levels have been recreated with modern crisp graphics. They use a scaling vector sprite design, allowing them to be re-drawn to any crazy resolution. With 100 levels, plus an additional 100 within the Renaissance pack, on top of a very comprehensive level editor, you will have a solid breakout time.
