I love farming sims and I see a lot of potential here! I really hope that the dev's continue to develop this game further. Its very peaceful and calming. Definitely something I can see myelf getting immersed in when more content comes out. This will be a game that I'll continue checking up on to see if there's new content!
Game is dead and at current price totally not worth it
So i decided to support this developer, and check out Potioneer. And i found it super relaxing and i was quite content with my outcome. who knew i had green fingers. Of course there is not a hole lot to do at this point. But if the dev keeps working on this im sure i would be coming back. I also think this would be a great vr experience for people that are new to vr or perhaps has never tried a vr headset. Every thing is very natural, you will get right into it. Also feel free to check out my skills in this little video. https://youtu.be/evtrGopfhx4
The only thing this game has right now is potential, and a few basic mechanics implemented. Unfortunately, it seems to be completely abandoned at this point, the last update having been over two years ago. Sad I wasted ten dollars only for the dev to just run away with it. I would love to see them come back and actually create something cool with this, but until then, save your money, and don't buy this.
I'm not really sure if Potioneer: The VR Gardening Simulator is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself. The game was abandoned roughly about 18 months after launch and hasn't been updated in 6 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. The game will never be completed. Before we get too deep into the weeds, some wording about what this is, although it does seem straightforward... you are in a small area outdoors and you use your VR controllers to do little tasks like gardening and of course mixing stuff to make potions. That's all there is to it, but even that aspect of the game is very barebones. This was abandoned very early in the development cycle... to the point that it's arguably unethical for the developer to sell it in such a pre-alpha state. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. This seems to have been made a VR exclusive to prevent any comparison with non-VR 3D games, a comparison that this game would fail very badly at. Developers must learn that while VR is great, if the only thing that makes the game great is the VR, then the game isn't great at all. The assets are mismatched and jarring, arguably they're just placeholders (the game was abandoned too early in development to see if they get replaced) but the lack of polish and incomplete nature of the game kills this one. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete PC game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers. Another unethical act of this developer, knowing full well that this game is abandoned and they will never complete it, they are deliberately trying to scam gamers into buying it by offering it on discount and selling keys to the game from third party key resellers. It's impossible to "accidentally" discount a game. The developer looked at their abandoned game, and instead of doing the right thing and removing it from Steam, they instead doubled-down and tried to scam even more people into paying for it. Greedy, and completely unethical. Doing the wrong thing, on purpose, for money. This is not okay. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Potioneer: The VR Gardening Simulator has the total ripoff price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "Dishonored 2", "Project Zomboid" or "7 Days to Die". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Edited at 2017-12-22: I think this game has been abandoned by its developer. You can't call it monthly updates if the last one was in July. Currently the game does not have enough content to hold your attention. Old review: Leaving a "not recommended" review on a small indie EA game feels cruel, but I'll elaborate now, and change my review as the development progresses - I promise. I really, really like the sound of this game, and the path it'll take. I love Morrowind, and hearing about a VR game that'd let me practice alchemy for "real" is a dream come true, believe me. The developer did kindly take my previous criticism into account, and fixed quite a few of the issues I reported, so props for that. However, I still cannot recommend this game atthe current price. It is very barebones; the title-promies potions are still nowhere to be seen, and the only thing to do at this point is plant a few types of flowers, watch them grow, then plant them again. The house building is not very engaging (to me, at least), and shouldn't be the current focus of the game. I'd instead like to see some potions make an appearance. A month has passed since the last update to this game, so I have hopes that such an update is brewing (ha ha). Until then, I'd recommend you hold your money until this project grows a bit.
Hey man, im adding the first pages to your wiki You currently have monopoly on garden games, please make this a big thing :D Gardening fanatics that i know loved the concept and established gameplay :)
Very nice start. But please improve the watersurface :P
