My wife is thinking of leaving me because of my obsession with Poker, but I think she’s bluffing
📝 Main Pros, Cons, and Suggestions:
🟩 Pros: + Demo (on itch.io) + Joker abilities make combat difficult + Switch cards between deck and hand on the fly + Chips, Stickers, and Tickets make for crazy combos + Stickers don’t need to be used immediately after purchase + Two different decks each with unique card effects and playstyles 🟥 Cons: - No continue/save on exit - No resolution options or borderless windowed mode - No individual audio controls, can only adjust master volume - Bug with Warrior of the north deck where cards were unkillable (100% dodge instead of 20%) - Cannot move stickers if dragged over cards (but still unequipped) as the card is always selected 🏷️ Suggestions: ~ More tarot variety ~ Re-roll card options ~ Toggle to show Poker hands ~ Let me return to main menu while saving where I was in the dungeon ~ Graphical and sound options expanded, especially separate audio for effects and music; I want to enjoy your soundtrack without listening to annoying combat effects
Poker? I hardly know her!
Poker Dungeon : Joker's Madness (PD) is a turn-based deck builder which had me battling through 30 stages, each harder than the last. During my first few runs I found combat bland, but as I progressed and discovered new chips and stickers, those thoughts all but disappeared. At one point my middle card would heal all of my cards, each turn, for 50% of its attack stat – Combined with 2x attack sticker, it became a healing powerhouse. Presently there are two decks, with each suite having unique abilities, attack and health, and playstyles (think roles, such as assassin, mage, ranger, and tank). Combat moves right to left, with each card having attack and health values which can be further improved through chips, stickers, and the multiplier (dependant on Poker hand played). The fun lies with the customisation - Chips provide permanent bonuses based on hand type, Stickers improve cards by giving them unique enhancements, and Tickets provide immediate bonuses (some temporary, some permanent). After each combat you’re given two doors, featuring either normal or elite enemies, tarot cards, or the Joker (a boss which appears every 10 stages) along with access to the shop between floors. Select whichever you like, enter battle again, and keep repeating the process until you lose all your cards or beat the final Joker at stage 30. That’s all there is to it – If this sounds fun to you (and trust me, it is), give it a try.
A Card Game KING review
Poker Dungeon is an interesting concept combing an autobattler with some poker hands but doesn't have a lot of depth (yet). It's still early in EA so it remains to be seen whether it will be able to resolve some of its issues. I hope so, because the core idea can work. I actually quite like the base concept. You recruit units in form of cards of different suits and values and then equip them with various items to make them stronger. If your form a poker hand with your units, their stats significantly increase, so it makes you consider not only their base strength but also if they can combo into a poker hand. Well, it works like that in theory, in practice however, you will likely just pick the strongest value (e.g. picking a Queen over an 6) because you just need one unit to die to lose the combo and then you are stuck with low level units. Another interesting aspect is that you can swap out your units from the board with units from the reserve, so if your DPS is about to die, you can replace it with another one potentially forming a new poker hand. With all that said, the game is still in EA and there are two outstanding issues I have with it: First, the decisions are rather obvious most of the time. You know what items to attach to which unit, there is very little reason to not pick a stronger version of a unit over a weaker one. It doesn't have a lot of depth, which is fine if it's meant to be a quick in-and-out game, but sometimes the battles can drag out and the fastest option sometimes isn't fast enough. Second issue that I have is with the balance. I have reached the lvl 30 Joker (boss in this game) twice with composition that absolutely destroyed everything. And then I got wiped with barely doing any damage. What worked for the entire game stopped working suddenly. To give an example, I had high DPS and a lot of heal in my army. The joker I faced had an ability that says "max damage dealt is 1, and it's attacks kill a unit instantly". With one passive it countered both my DPS and my healing. DPS did 1 damage while it was one shoting most enemies before. Heal was useless as the effect killed a unit instantly. Despite the issues, the game has promise, so I would watch out for updates!
The positive
+ Interesting combination of autobattler and poker hands. + Building an OP comp is fun.
The neutral
* Some battles last too long, especially when dealing with tanks that heal themselves. There should be another speed up option.
The negative
- Not much depth currently as most choices are obvious. I wish there was more usefulness for lower valued cards. - Some boss design and balance is frustrating. - Lack of tooltips. How exactly does taunt work? What is confusion? These are not explained.
Conclusion:
Interesting autobattler and poker hands concept held back by balance issues and lack of thoughtful decisions. Careful recommendation.
Poker is a combination of luck and skill.
Poker Dungeon : Joker's Madness is engaging and fast-paced dungeon roguelike game with poker mechanics. The game is quite simple to understand, and after a few rounds, everything becomes clear. All you need is knowledge of poker hands and, of course, a bit of luck(skill). Visually, the game looks decent and has pretty pleasing background music. Each card suit has its own type of attack. If your deck has a combination, you'll get a multiplier that increases your deck's health and attack damage. The game also includes chips, stickers, and tickets, which have various abilities and buffs. You will also encounter various bosses in the form of Jokers, who have unique abilities. There is a fast-forward function as well as an auto mode. The game lacks metaprogression, so after defeat, you simply start over.
Poker Dungeon: Joker's Madness plunges players into an enthralling turn-based deck-building adventure, posing a challenge for them to overcome 30 arduous stages brimming with strategic depth and customization. Initially, combat could seem prosaic, but as players advance and unlock a vast assortment of chips, stickers, and tickets, the game metamorphoses into a vivid display of strategic expertise. The game flaunts different disparate decks, each featuring unique card effects and playstyles, presenting a diverse array of tactical options similar to classic RPG roles such as assassins, mages and rangers. Players can smoothly switch cards between their deck and hand during combat, facilitating dynamic strategy adjustments. The introduction of chips, stickers, and tickets further enriches the gameplay, allowing players to create wild combinations and customize their decks to their preferred playstyle. However, the balance of the game is severely flawed. Essentially, it is highly challenging to win all the way to the finish. It is anticipated that it can be further optimized, and guidance is also highly necessary. Nonetheless, Poker Dungeon: Joker's Madness remains an absorbing and gratifying deck-building experience.
This is great. The developer is responsive the Poker conceit is novel. I recommend it, this is a great time to support an innovative developer. I picked this up looking for an interesting early access game, and I hit the jackpot! FYI, the base game is a bit samey. Treat it like the tutorial. The good stuff is in the beta.
I'm a little surprised there aren't more reviews for this game considering the Balatro breakout. This game has that feel and is far more nuanced than it will appear on first blush. You've seen the line "I feel I'm just scratching the surface" before and I think this is appropriate to this game. The chips, stickers, and by-round modifiers change often and offer a ton of strategy. Yes, you want to build a good poker hand to increase damage, defense, and points but you also need the chips and other in-game wrinkles to get deep into the game. There isn't any kind of tutorial and I was fine with that because I had several ah-ha moments as I switched up cards in my deck or re-positioned my cards in hand. Again, there's a lot of nuance to work with and that's what makes a game like this work buying. Having gotten it on sale, I'm more than pleased. Buy it. Oh, and if the developers are seeing this (I'm sure you are), while I understand the change in music for Joker battles I have to be honest and note that it doesn't fit the in-game music up to that point. It's too goofy, silly. I want a sense of dread when I'm in a boss battle not a feeling like I'm at the carnival. Cool game.
balatro really did opened another pandoras box just like vampire survivors and im liking this playing cards with interesting gimmicks along with a equipment and positioning system its nice
