Good fun. Has potential but can't recommend until that is realised. Namely (in order of importance): 1. The ability to export standalone executable games. 2. The ability to customise all assets within the app. I would recommend if #1 was implemented.
Edit - 8 April 2018 (Less than two weeks following the start of early access) - Thorough developer support in discussions - bug fixes, suggestions, proper communication. - Already numerous suggestions implemented in build 0.99142 - triple jump, jump variation settings, player friction physics settings, and more.. - The bug fixes are coming quickly, within days. - First roadmap for suggested features tackles roughly 25 features - all planned for introduction by end of next week. Progress is moving quickly and game is being well stress tested. Review - 28 March 2018 High quality 'Super Mario Maker' type game for steam. The natural evolution of Life of Pixel. What I like -Already very fleshed out in early access. -Devs are passionate. -Some levels made by Super Icon in game. -Fast and easy to create levels - I have zero experience coding or programming - you don't need any of that. -Save and share levels in the workshop for others to play. -Boy and girl character players. -Option for double jump and jump acceleration variation. -Jumping physics feel very good. Smooth, tight and fluid. -Equip your player with weapons - hammers, boomerang, fire, guns etc -Flying, walking, shooting enemies. -Ten game systems/themes to suit you. Retro/modern. These expertly recreate accurate and nostalgic retro system aesthetics. -Download other people's levels. -Lasers -Cannons -Spikes and saws -Moving platforms -Fire, lava, deadly water -All sorts of terrain options -Jet pack (very fluid and fun) -NPCs with dialogue What I’d like to see as game grows -More character control - triple jump, customisable min and max jump height based on jump input duration, friction variation, wall jump etc. -Additional enemy AI -More levels from community and devs. What I don’t like -Nothing, this is early access and it’s very early days. It's remarkably stable right now. Last note -There will be more content to come throughout early access. I beta tested pre early access - the devs are polite in communicating and will be commited to taking suggestions for growing the game with a passionate community in mind. Support Super Icon and help this awesome game grow. A growing community will mean lots of content. Cannot recommend more highly. Platformer addicts should jump on this or anyone creative.
This tool, even though it simplifies and streamlines the process of making a platformer, is extremely barebones and really needs some work for me to recommend it... Bear with me a little here: I bought this game motivated by the trailers and it didn't live up to my expectations at all, it needs a lot more polish, specially in the mechanics you are allowed to introduce to the game. My main problem is that in the trailers it showed you can import Mario, Sonic and even Wonderboy assets, even though you can't melee hit enemies with a sword, or even jump on top of their heads to kill them (you must use an ingame potion to be able to do this...), so you're restricted to using a selection of simple projectiles as your basic means of attack. It has other problems, most notably the sound (simple 8-bit SFX and chiptunes is all you get, and it gets old quick) and HUD, which is disorganized and not very visually pleasing to be honest. If a tool that advertises itself as a "make your own game based on your favorite retro-games" only offers gameplay elements from Megaman and calls it a day, i just simply can't recommend it, not even as your first attempt at a platformer maker.
I'm sorry, but I just don't like this game. And it's not because you can't export the games. First of all, the way the player controls just feels... bad. The jumping is way too fast and too high. Plus, there's no indication of what features a certain level has. Like double jumping for example. The game kinda feels like it's stuck between two identities. One wants to be an easy to use, premade assets, level editor. While the other wants to be a serious customizable game creator. This isn't mentioning how cheap the game feels. The menus are very bare bones and look like default unity assets. Now, all of this wouldn't be that much of an issue if it wasn't for the price. 20 dollars is way, way. way too high for this game. And, personally, I would rather spend it elsewhere. If you like the game, power to you. Kind of jealous actually. But with it's current state, I just can't recommend it.
I really enjoyed how easy it is to get your ideas on the screen in a matter of minutes. I'm primarily an pixel artist, I'm not a programmer by any means. So I need a program that does the heavy program lifting for me. That being said, I really miss a export feature. I want to create MY game, with own menus, logos and so on. As it stands now, I'm confined to the Platago ecosystem. I would gladly pay extra for at export feature. PRO: ease of use Con: No export capability

This game is amazing. Really, I hesitate to call it a "game" because it's more like a set of tools ot build your own game, or to play games made by others. And unlike certain other "Makers" out there - you really can make entire games - with multiple connected levels and even a map screen. There are tons of fine-tooth controls, from setting the jump height, to how enemies are killed, to how to finish the level. And you can import your own sprites and background to truly make it your own game. Of course, most of the stuff on the Workshop is people making skins to mimick other existing games - but it can be your own IP if you want. It's not as intuitive as Super Mario Maker, but it's got a lot more power. Not nearly as many enemy choices - but it makes up for that in how much you can roll your own physics. It's far from perfect, but it's in early access still, and the devs are hard at work. And they've made there own high quality platformers in the past, and I have no doubts this will continue to get better and better as time goes on.
dead game. devs forgot it exists
I've been playing this game for some time now and it's cool to see a editor-focused platformer with lots of polish and features. All the different options for designing custom levels combined with graphic modes based on retro consoles and computers of the 80's/90's give it lots of replay value too. Hope to see this game get bigger in the future. ^^
