Alright. The character creation for Menzoberranzn is god awful, the intro/hook quest is a slog. The adventure and combat--- forget all that. I'm going to tell you right now why YOU are going to spend the 1.99 discount sale price for this game. Attached to it, more importantly than the PC game is a FULL adventure book for the 1992 ADnD 2ed adventure of the same name. Story, stats, Drizzt and The Melinthors, a drow family of premade PC's that you can play so you're in the middle of the story and have stakes in it. LISTEN TO ME. Listen to me, this book otherwise is in the 100s of dollars on the internet. Buy this game, to buy the book. Run the campaign. Your friends will love it. There is BEAUTIFUL hand drawn marker art. A MASSIVE hand drawn map of the city. Perfectly preserved RPG history made by people who clearly had passion for the thing they were making. Buy. It. For. The. Book. You WILL NOT regret it.
I cannot believe I never played this. It's a real gem and should be an instant buy for any dungeon crawler fan. I was wishing it had more atmospheric music/sounds. I solved this by streaming some Soundscape & Ambience tracks. It made it all the more tense. I kinda wish the maps weren't so much "fill the paper" design. It has a few rough QoL issues, like using the keypad with numlock off and not having other hot keys like M for map or map toggle, etc. Maybe that would have trivialized a few things? Still totally worth a purchase, just try it with some dungeon atmospheric stuff in the background for added punch.
I literally spent 2 hours walking around in a dark city, getting jumped by people while looking for a well. I found said well, spend another hour trying to find buckets. After that ordeal my two party members (Dwarven priest named Paul Andersi and Secondary the Gnome thief) left the town. We got attacked by a big guy but he exploded into snot and Drizzt showed up 10/10 game. Also the graphics for the introduction are better than most AAA games these days.
Save game does not work. You type in a name for the save, press return, the game reverts back to not having the game saved!
I only got this for dungeon hack (someday I'll play MENZOBERRANZAN when I get to it) and man, dungeon hack is what I wish to see remade or given a modern qol windows port of. (Though, as it is here is perfect too) DH is the prototype of a rougelike (genre) game that feels as modern as it's current day counterparts and it's from 1993! So much can be customized for your runs, you can make your own character via D&D second edition rules, it's procedurally generated dungeons always change with each new run. You have a local leaderboard on who made it the furthest, it's so much in a small 6 dollar package. It's exactly the game I've been looking for and it's a shocker nobody has tried something like this in a modern sense since, I wouldn't want it in high res rtx graphics though, just as it looks here with some improvements or even updated stats and classes to match the current d&d. Great game, absolutely highly recommend it.
This is a review for "DUNGEON HACK", I tried to play "MENZOBERRANZAN" but couldn't get past the terrible first generation 3D graphics so quit after five minutes. Dungeon hack has serviceable 2D tile based graphics that don't get in the way of the experience (I recommend dosbox settings: Graphics Mode - ddraw, Scaling Engine - normal x3, keep aspect ratio - true). Was pleasantly surprised by this game. I skipped it back in the nineties as it was one character only, no story, and too random - despite being really into the eye of the beholder series. There is something about the game that is quite fun and interesting despite it's flaws. Feels very DnD. The main complaint for me is that enemy attacks are guaranteed to hit if you are in an adjacent square when the attack animation starts, so you can be three squares away when you take damage which makes no sense when enemies are using melee weapons. I got used to this over time but was still taking (in my opinion) unfair damage late in the game. Makes the combat not feel 'tight'. Really great character creation and amazing customisation of the Dungeon itself. I did three play-throughs: Fighter - Moderate difficulty - level 2 - ended up running out of food, game is difficult without any spells, decided to do cleric next for healing and food spells. Cleric/Fighter - Moderate difficulty - Level 8 - still found it challenging but ended up quitting this character as there was no way to identify items so had no clue what was the best gear or what things did. Mage/fighter - Custom difficulty - Finished game - Managed to finish this one and the challenge was much better as tweaked the dungeon settings. I set the monster amount/difficulty down by one, increased treasure amount by one, tweaked food settings to be easier, set illusion-walls/pits/traps to low, and magic power up by one. Also set dungeon levels to 11 as the standard 18 is a bit of a slog! I think mage spells are a must for this game, especially "improved identify" to have any idea what anything does - including potions and weapon/armour stats. Mages have healing later in the game in "vampiric touch". The offensive spells are also great for harder enemies. Doubt I'll play again in the near future but really enjoyed this old-school throwback.
Menzoberranzan easily the second best dungeon crawler game after daggerfall, amazing story, ambiance and gameplay for the time it was released. Grab a beer and start hacking and slashing.
Only boxed GOLD 1 is better :) And yeah even though EOB1 of 3 is STILL GUD , the other two are where D&D really shines! So remember, I have been playing D&D for 45 years or so, I KNOW what I am sharing here!
