Excellent 2D top-down physics-based puzzle-shooter. BACKSTORY - the original PixelJunk Shooter was released for the PS3, then the PC. It's available on Steam. It's a fairly short game. Enjoyable and innovative, but with some notable quality of life problems. - PixelJunk Shooter 2 was released for the PS4 and Vita. It's *not* available on Steam. - this Ultimate edition was first released on the PS4, then the PC. It combines Shooter 1 & 2 into one game, along with much improved visuals and quality of life doodads. SHOULD I BUY PIXELJUNK SHOOTER 1? No, there's no point. Not only does this package have far more content, but it's a much greater challenge, and has more creature comforts. And if you prefer Shooter 1's flat look, Ultimate lets you switch to the original art. PROBLEMS - the game's age is showing. Fullscreen support is broken, and the game will only render at your native resolution. So, if you have a slow machine and play on a 4K screen, well, you're going to be playing at 4K. - an achievement (Cave of Wonder) is borked, so no 100% for you unless you go all Rain Man. - there are multiplayer achievements. Must be nice to have friends. - the music -- Google informs me that it is "triphop" -- cuts in and out, breaks up. Long-standing problem, never fixed. GAMEPLAY Despite the years, there have been very few 2D shooters as innovative and proficient as this. The fluid simulation is a standout, and drives the innovation in the level design and gameplay. The game starts off pretty casually: the original Shooter 1 levels don't pose too much of a challenge, and it's more of puzzle game than a shooter. But the Shooter 2 content introduces some formidable boss fights, and even descends in to bullet hell for a short while. This is a long game. It has well over 100 levels/puzzles, and will probably take you over 30 hours to 100%. (If the achievement pops for you, that is.) There's a lot of value here. Bonus points for homages to Namco and Konami. VERDICT This is a must have game for any kind of classic shooter fan. Get it.
This game is an absolute blast! I got 100% in this game on my PSVita! I like how this version looks! It's a big improvement over the classic visuals imo. However it's really hard to look past this game's music bug. Like, this game's adaptive music is just completely borked on PC for some reason, and it doesn't look like anyone has made a fix for it. Given how old this game is, I've kinda given up hope that it'll ever be fixed, even by the community. But I'll still give this game a thumbs up! Just with the caveat that you should probably buy it on another platform without the music bug.
I played through PixelJunk Shooter 1 & 2 back when it first released many years ago. Great collection to replay it on Steam soon!
I really enjoyed the first and second Pixeljunk Shooter on PS3 and Ultimate on PS4. It's nice to now also have Ultimate on PC, but the music bug remains just like the PC port of the first Shooter, plus there is glitching around the fluids when using the classic graphics style. The classic textures also aren't the same as the original textures the two games had on PS3. I still recommend Ultimate because it's the same price as buying only the first game on Steam.
Loved this game as a child and still enjoy it, nice game to play with friends
Bundling together two bubbly twin stick shooters into an single package, PJSU is an absolute recommend. Zipping through narrow caverns while dodging alien fire and magma is smooth and responsive, and collecting hidden treasure while uncovering hidden zones never gets old. Aside from some of the bosses overstaying their welcome, Ultimate is the best way to play this excellent little pair of games.
I really, really love this game. I played it a ton as a kid and bought it again to finally finish it up- just missing one achievement, whose requirements do not match the description (Smoke Me A Kipper, I'll Be Back For Breakfast) I love the mechanics, the design, the difficulty, the OST: This is genuinely an outstanding game! I really wish the music wasn't broken though (at least on my end)- the soundtrack is used dynamically in this game, i.e layers of it is applied depending on what's happening, but the different tracks are often desynced which makes me sad :( Q-Games pls fix
This was one of my childhood games. I grew up with it, and almost every memory I have of it isn’t solo, it’s with my brother. That is what made it special. The game itself is good. The mechanics work, the ideas are solid, and it deserves the praise it gets. But the truth is, the game was never the whole reason I loved it. Now I am almost finished, and playing it alone feels completely different. The repetition is impossible to ignore. The more I play, the more something inside me aches, not because the game is bad, but because it cannot be what it once was. There is no one there to save me. No voice calling things out, no teamwork. When I die, there is no recovery together, the game just resets. Progress is painfully slow now I can barely finish one level in three weeks. It is still a good game. A meaningful one. But it was never meant to be experienced like this.
Inoffensively average.
Good fun. Originally played it on the PS3, still decent. Haven't finished part 2 as felt a worse experience, but anyhow - part 1 was good.
