PixelJunk Shooter is a 2D mix of exploration, twin-shooting and puzzle game. You control a small spaceship, and in each level, you have to rescue 7 scattered scientists. You must find your way to them, fight some enemies, dodge obstacles and solve some puzzles. It’s hard to explain how it works, but it’s enjoyable. Levels are short, but you only select stages, containing 5 levels each. With 3 worlds, each with 5 stages, that equals 75 levels in total. Plus, at the end of each world there’s also a boss to beat. Throughout the game you’ll encounter different mechanics, keeping things fresh. Overall, the game isn’t hard. There’s also extra stuff to collect for 100%, and a score attack mode for each stage with leaderboards. There’s also local co-op. The presentation is clean and has a relaxing soundtrack. But despite being enjoyable, I just can’t recommend it. The reason is that PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate is also available, which is a remaster of this game and PixelJunk Shooter 2, which never released on Steam. And both are being sold with the same price! So, I just see no reason to buy PixelJunk Shooter over the more complete and improved PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate. If this was cheaper, that would be understandable, but for the same price my recommendation goes to the Ultimate version instead.
Don't buy this - you want PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate. Same price, more content.
This is a good game, but this isn't the version you want. Buy Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate instead. Ultimate combines this game with PixelJunk Shooter 2 in to one much more comprehensive and challenging package, along with better visuals and UI. If you do buy this version, be aware that: - windowing/fullscreen is broken. The game will play at whatever resolution your screen is. So, if you're playing on a 4K screen with a potato, you'll be... playing at 4K. It's been like this a long time, so don't expect the devs to repair it at this late stage. (The situation is the same with the Ultimate edition.) - the dynamic music system doesn't work properly. (Nor does it work in the Ultimate edition.) - the game has a few quality of life issues. The menus, though attractive, are a mess. The achievements require you to find all the secret rooms and diamonds. How many secret rooms and how many diamonds? The game doesn't tell you. MIssing a diamond? Good luck.

a really fun little time burner
Loved this on PS3, nice to be able to play it on PC as well, only issue is that the music playback is bugged which is a real shame because it's normally really dynamic and well done.
It is a somewhat simple action space platformer. The interesting part is the somewhat destructible environment where you can strategically destroy stuff to help your goal. It is an interesting gimmick worth to experience.
Just so you know what you're getting yourself into; This version only has the first half of the levels from Ultimate, since Ultimate was a combination of this game and it's sequel. The cool remastered visuals are locked to Ultimate. If you really want those, you'll have to go there. This game has local co-op, but if you want access to the (pretty much entirely dead) online versus, you'll have to play Ultimate. So why play this? Why not just go play Ultimate? I'm not sure if this is a problem that everyone encounters, but I (along with some other people) have encountered a nasty audio bug that completely butchers the dynamic music. For me, the music is a pivotal part of the experience, and it's hard to play when the music is so badly messed up. But the original game doesn't have this bug! So that's why I recommend it! And hey, It's the Steam Sale! You've still got a little bit of time to pick the game up for pocket change!~ (Well, as long as you didn't take too long to find this review...)
水・溶岩・ガス・・・などの動きを考えて要救助者を回収していかならないため若干面倒でもありますがそこが面白さでもあります ステージ数があまり多くはないため、ボリューム面でやや物足りなさは感じました
This game means alot to me, especially because i've had it on my PS3 for so long. It's such a hidden gem. Not enough people have checked this game out. It's a very unique kind of game. Its graphics have held up incredibally well due to its 2d art style. Not to mention that if its vector graphics work the way I think they do then it literally looks better as time goes on. The gameplay is really fun, and I can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stop coming back to get that one gem I missed (The games main collectible) I currently am working on 100% each version of this game, from PS3 to vita, its sequel, and of course the ultimate version on steam. Its just a kind of game I can't find anywhere else. Sure, there are games with the same concepts. It cleary takes inspiration from Subterrania, and the later entrys see some Thunder Force influence. But this game is SO much more accesible. in fact, without a game like this, I wouldn't have been able to handle the ♥♥♥♥ obliterating difficulty those older titles have. It's a gateway game into the shmup genre. It includes some reallly intuitive puzzle elements. I say elements, because everything is a cohesive experience in this game. Every mechanic impacts eachother in some way, and it makes the world feel more alive. The physics system, which is part of what makes this game so special, introduces all kinds of cool opportunites for puzzle design. A cave game happening in caves is a damn good mix. Buy this game. You will not regret it.
