Pillars of Eternity was one of the first games of the CRPG-revival. The game mostly looks back at the old Baldurs Gates and plays similarly. The story is intriguing, but I bounced off hard of the real-time-pause combat, which I do know from older games, but felt particularly chaotic in this entry. As combat is most of what you will be doing, even more if you want to explore the central gigantic dungeon in your castle, this just couldn't keep my interest for too long. Now, after they thankfully released a turn-based mode I picked it up again and was really satisfied with the result. While it was hardly revolutionary or got me to feel like Disco Elysium or Plancescape Torment, it is a nice fantasy RPG that does enough to differentiate itself from the generic D&D crowd, with it's unique setting.
Replayed this for the first time in 10 years because they patched a Turnbased combat mode into it. And with the dlcs its even better than i remebered. on of the GOAT rpgs
i saved a baby from crazy cult dan in the next sequel of the game (Deadfire) the baby becomes my shipmate. 10/10.

good
I just love it, my kind of game. Heavy on the story.
The Wheel turns still, and with it the labors of stubborn hands. So too have the keepers of this old tale seen fit to graft turn-based combat upon a body long accustomed to another gait. It is... serviceable. Not inspired, nor blasphemous. Like a cracked censer mended with wire, it yet holds enough incense to finish the rite. But what are tactics to a soul cast unbidden into the Void every few minutes? What wisdom is there in measuring each step upon the battlefield when the world itself shatters five or six times within the span of an hour? A pilgrimage interrupted so often ceases to be a pilgrimage. It becomes penance. One may forgive rough edges. One may forgive age. One may even forgive ambition that outruns craftsmanship. But a game that cannot abide its own existence long enough to be played asks of its faithful a devotion fit only for gods. And I have burned enough gods already.
