I've tried playing through it multiple times. The combat is repetitive. Character AI feels dated. Characters will have more spells than you care to ever use, and many of them feel too bespoke to ever need. I don't feel invested in the combat. It just feels like a chore, another step to get through to the story. The storyline at times pulls me in but then I feel like I'm being lectured about histories, nations, deities. I'm a fan of fantasy. Malazan, for example. The world building in this game feels like a lecture, in a bad way. I don't find any of the information helpful, interesting or relevant. This game will be great for some people. But if you want fun tactical battles, you'll find it lacking. If extensive fantasy histories feel boring, you'll fall asleep. If graphics are important to you, you'll find the character models blurred and dull. Was probably peak in 2015. But time has moved on.
One of the finest computer RPGs ever made. After more than 2,100 hours with Pillars of Eternity, I can confidently recommend it to anyone who enjoys classic isometric RPGs such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment. The world of Eora is rich, believable, and full of memorable lore. Combat rewards planning rather than button mashing, and character creation is among the best in the genre. Nearly every class feels unique, making repeated playthroughs genuinely worthwhile. I've created everything from druids and ciphers to paladins, priests, rangers, monks, and rogues, and each has offered a different experience. The writing is excellent, the companions are memorable, and the soundtrack perfectly complements the atmosphere. The game also respects player choice, allowing role-playing to meaningfully shape conversations and quests. It isn't perfect. The rules can be intimidating for newcomers, and combat can become chaotic until you learn how the systems work. The pacing is deliberate, so players looking for a fast-paced action RPG may find it slow. Even so, these are minor criticisms compared to what the game accomplishes. Pillars of Eternity captures the spirit of the Infinity Engine classics while building an identity of its own. More than a decade after release, I still find myself starting new characters, experimenting with different builds, and discovering details I overlooked before. If you enjoy thoughtful role-playing games with deep mechanics, excellent world-building, and tremendous replay value, this is an easy recommendation. 9.5/10.
I look for the games with Very Positive or Overwhelmingly Positive ratings, and I buy them thinking they’ll pull me in. And yet, despite all that praise, so many games end up feeling more like work than something I can unwind with. Then I found out about this game that got a major update after 10 years of release. Wow, hardly ever saw a business decision like that in my many years of corporate life. So I bought the game with all DLCs. With Pillars of Eternity, I actually find myself coming back, sinking into the world, and wanting to keep going. It doesn’t feel like work—it feels like something I genuinely want to return to. It's not as fast paced as most modern games, nor offer good QoL. But you get all the feeling of progression of your power, and story. With turn based combat, I can think and plan to win, rather than react to win. The writing may not be easy reads. If I rewrote it in the games style: The text is laborious to unravel, its modest notion obscured beneath an excess of wandering and needlessly protracted discourse. Well, it may be stylish, but sometimes it's too long and hard to see what it's saying, though the message is simple. Overall, if you're like me cannot find game that can grab you, you may want to try this game out.
Downloaded this game since they made big noise about "turn based combat mode" and its totally broken. Bugs out from the first fight on, cannot end turn, cannot attack, game permanently on pause (known bug btw) and you have to relog and its maddening. Sad how they cant fix an old game without breaking it in a new way. Years too late for a refund, but uninstall still works.
Bounced off this 3 times. The pacing is rough and the writing is too overly verbose. I'm fine with reading but it doesn't flow well. The RTwP is ok, but the attributes make some builds feel really unintuitive.
