Remember Baldur's Gate II? Well this is even better, give it a try!
Modern-day successor to Infinity Engine games + Beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds + Real-Time with Pause combat + Companions and world setting If you've ever had that itch to play old Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale (and you still should), this game is just for you and offers one of the purest CRPG experiences you can get in modern times. The completely new setting takes place in the world of Eora and has impressive depth and quality. It features its own pantheon of gods, races, geography, established history, and even languages. The main story revolves around a broken reincarnation cycle, and your character is at the center of it as a Watcher, a person who can read other people's past souls. The storytelling slowly unfolds as you explore the world and uncover the secrets behind the crisis. You’ll meet many companions along the way who are very well written, and I definitely had a few favorites. Combat is classic Real-Time with Pause (or Turn-Based), providing strong tactical depth and many opportunities to resolve challenging encounters. Alongside traditional character classes, there are new ones with interesting mechanics, like Cipher and Chanter. During combat, you can use abilities that are limited per encounter or per rest. Combat was definitely a highlight for me, as there are not many RPGs with this system nowadays. Other things worth mentioning include the music, which eventually grew on me and fits the setting perfectly. As you progress through the story, you’ll also gain your own stronghold, which serves as your base of operations. You can upgrade it with merchants, bounties, and more, and beneath it lies a large dungeon that you can gradually explore. I would also recommend the White March expansion, which is designed for higher-level characters and adds new challenging encounters, Soulbound weapons, and companions.

One of the best CRPG of all time.
top better with turn based
> See you fantasy cowboy ## Why - Well written & voice acted - A gigantic, crunchy CRPG to sink your teeth into - Turn based mode! Very cool they went back to add it ## Why Not - You don't have 100+ hours to sink into a single game ## Impressions This is absolutely a game I would've burned 100+ hours on back in my days of gaming freedom, but with a wife and soon kids I do not have 100+ hours to burn. Right from the start, Pillars makes it clear you're in for the long haul. There's more lore in the character creator/opening area than most metroidvanias have in their creator's head, and the section ends with typically 'chosen one' things happening to you. But first there's a town to find where the brilliantly voice-acted Eder joins your party, along with Aloth the split personality wizard. Both seem like interesting characters, though almost 20 hours in the only one of my 5-man party whose story had been explored at all was still Eder. The turn based mode is a welcome addition since I could only play on my Macbook and with minimal clicking to avoid antagonising The Wife, but it might slow things down further compared to real-time. There's clearly plenty of depth to it but at least on regular difficulty I bulldozed my way through with minimal interaction with that depth and without much challenge. My sticking point was the first main city, Defiance Bay. Up until that point the game felt pretty manageable; sure there were some alternate paths to take, a castle full of people to murder as a party of 5 and endless forests to drag my camera around. But it was mostly fighting with a bit of story thrown in. Upon arriving in Defiance Bay I was inundated with world events, politics, guilds, side quests... basically the realisation this was not a game I had time for. If you do, and you like this style of game, probably give it a go. I enjoyed the bits I did get to play; the story was off to a promising start, combat was varied enough to be interesting and your motley crew seem likeable or at least entertaining.

>obsidian strikes aging instance crash on first boot up >one of the best CRPG i have play >main story has soo much depth and twist and soo well written. >i started playing right when trun based combat update came so i really dont know whats the default combat feels like >side quest and companion quest are great as well >obsidian cooked but they forgot to cook outer worlds such a SHAME >anyways great CRPG
Very good classic turn-based (that's the mode I played it in) CRPG. But not as good as the sequel. Lots of quests and grinding.
