The aiming being reticule-based over a straight random number is a novel concept and makes the turn based combat feel a little more involved. But the lack of basically any vertical progression makes the game become increasingly tedious as you progress deeper into a save file and the enemy starts fielding heavily armoured automatons or giant eldritch death monstrers. You never really feel like you're getting more powerful, only like you're getting more pieces to attempt to fill in a steadily decreasing amount of blank spaces.. As an SRPG it fails big-time. It might strike a chord with those who wanted more of a simulation-feel out of XCOM though.
Like modern x-com but different.
LOVE IT. It’s like an improved XCOM game. More customizations. Instead of aliens you get... well, no spoilers. Not aliens. The enemies feel like they evolve against you, and that adds real unpredictability. Manual aiming is a game-changer. No more hits at 90% hit rate. Being able to cripple an arm or blow out a weapon instead of just hitting “body” is extremely satisfying. The freedom in how you take a shot feels closer to a simulator than a dice-roll. Classes. Very interesting. Assault/sniper/heavy combinations, priest mind-control builds, technician repairs... And vehicles? YES. The first time I rolled into a mission with a Scarab and just shredded crabs with a turret… pure bliss. Or a missile blowing the enemy team, and often times my guys. The geoscape layer is more interesting than XCOM’s too. Diplomacy with Anu, New Jericho, and Synedrion actually matters. You’re navigating ideological conflicts about the future of humanity. But overall — Phoenix Point hits a sweet spot: - A smarter tactical system than XCOM - More meaningful strategic decisions - A darker and more mysterious lore - And enemies that literally adapt to your tactics It’s addictive in the best way.
SHUT UP, I GOTTA SAVE SYNEDRION.
