Really good start. My daughter is taking percussion in school, and wanted to practice marimba at home. This looks like a great substitute, and she immediately banged out Yellow Submarine and seemed right at home with the spacing, responsiveness, etc. A way to import sheet music would be awesome (would probably have to appear quite a bit larger than the current music stand to be readable on the Vive, but virtual whiteboard sized or on the back wall would be great).
Obviously not as responsive as a real instrument, but this is a good start. Sometimes it's hard to make a sound without being very careful about hitting the bar, which can be annoying. Another thing that would bring this from kind of useful to extremely useful is the ability to import sheet music from a PDF to be able to read it in-game while playing.

I would definitely wait on this game to be updated a lot more before trying it. The instruments have a very strange doppler effect while you're playing them and the steel drum has some odd hitboxes for the mallets. My computer also overheated while playing this, which surprised me considering the game is not very complex and my computer didn't seem that hot before I started playing. I was only in it for a few minutes. Also since it's not a real instrument and there's no bounce back from the mallets, people experienced with these instruments may have a hard time getting used to this. I did myself and kept hitting other notes when I thought I was hitting the right note.
Kinda disappointing. Hit detection is kinda bad, especially when using proper technique when playing mallet instruments, you're supposed to try and hit through the key to get a good sound, but you actually do hit through the key with this. Keys need to be solid objects interacting with the mallets, rather than just triggers floating in space that react when the mallet passes through them. The sound should be produced when mallets collide with the keys, with both the mallets and keys being physical objects. Right now with the way it works, it's just too clunky. Plus I played both a major and a minor scale multiple times and didn't get the achievement for them. Just think there's a lot of work that needs to be done here before the game becomes an enjoyable experience.
it's better than what it once was! performance is great along with all the refined features percussive has to offer.
http://www.83830.com/game/201611/201457101.shtml
I AINT TRYNA BUY A VIBRAPHONE SO... good game
Overall, this is the closest attempt I've tried at good VR mallet percussion. As is, this game is fun to noodle around in, but just barely misses the mark on feeling satisfying. The main things that need to be tightened up are the hit detection and the latency. Hitboxes on the notes are somewhat inconsistent, with some notes having huge hitboxes and others very narrow. Even if it will never be perfect, at least getting something consistent would make it possible to get used to. Possibly being able to grow an instrument to a larger size would help, or possibly even custom hitboxes/bar sizes. Latency to some extent could be due to my current setup, but it's definitely worse than Paradiddle for me even on the same equipment. It's currently not so bad that I can't play anything, but bad enough that it doesn't feel right. After a certain tempo, the latency becomes about a sixteenth note and it's not longer possible to really play anything. I wonder if giving a MIDI out option would solve this, so we could just loopback to our DAW and tweak the audio buffer to get the latency right. One last thing that I think is all but necessary is the ability to change the angle on the mallets. Maybe it's optimized for a different controller than what I'm using, but the mallets are about 30 degrees above where I expect them to be. To hit the bar, I have to play well past what feels like horizontal. A simple way to adjust the position of the mallets in your hand would do a lot towards making this feel much better. Four mallet support is definitely a nice-to-have (and I have plenty of ideas on how that could work), as well importing sheet music, but these I feel are secondary to a satisfying playing experience. Get the hitboxes and the latency right and this becomes awesome.
I played percussive instruments for 10 years until 2017. I miss them, so I've been looking for a substitute in VR. Real vibraphones are... a bit too expensive.VRChat has some instruments but none of them are finished and now I bought Percussive VR during the Winter Sale. The app works but has several flaws: - glissando doesn't work; it plays only every 2nd bar, for example when you start from C up, it's C E G B D (most likely it's intentional to reduce mistakes but I don't see a way to modify it), so you can't play some vibraphone pieces, such as Midnight Star by David Friedman - the vibraphone is dampened by default and the documentation says it requires a USB pedal (I'll try emulating it using controller buttons and steering wheel pedals and update this review if it works) - at least there should be a possibility to use the controllers for that - no mallet/bar collisions (though it doesn't feel bad, it just looks bad) - no avatars, no external cameras, no greenscreens, no alternative environments - the marimba 3D model is unfinished (but overall the models look nice) - no multiplayer - no instrument scaling in 3D But it has several advantages over all available VRChat instruments (not that there's much competition to speak of anyway): + instrument height adjustment + no sound delay + no problems with multiple hits per stroke + dynamics + nice graphics + 4 mallets + different mallets to choose from (hard and soft, sometimes medium) + analogue mallet spread control (with triggers) + 5 in 1 (xylo, mari, vibes, bells, steel pan) Overall, I wouldn't pay the full price because the last update was in 2021 and glissando is broken but I wanted to support the developer. I'd pay the full price if not for those 2 issues, and I'd pay more for adding collisions and dampening. I'd also like to see ways to adjust dynamics, mallet spread min/max limits, hotkeys for mallet spread, customizable colors and... well, improving all the flaws I've listed. But it's a good app for what it is. Recommended if you want to practice or record projects at home. I hope the developer returns. I'd like to be a patron. After all, there's this or you have to buy a real instrument.
