Pathfinder: Kingmaker is an amazing collection of great ideas held back by poor execution and terrible game design decisions. I'm not deeply familiar with the original tabletop games, but I know that Pathfinder is based on Dungeons & Dragons and takes an even more rules-heavy approach. The result is an incredibly complex and convoluted system that, in my opinion, works terribly as a video game. This game is yet another example of why tabletop mechanics that work perfectly with a live Game Master don't always translate well into a video game. Without thoughtful adaptation, they often create unnecessary restrictions and situations where the player feels limited for no good reason. The character progression, skills, and equipment systems are overwhelmingly complicated. Even though I've played plenty of RPGs, I still had to spend hours trying to understand how everything worked. Eventually, I simply got tired of it. I don't want to spend dozens of hours just learning how the mechanics function. It feels like the developers designed this game primarily for experienced Pathfinder tabletop players who already know the rules and don't need to read pages of explanations before they can actually enjoy the game. As I mentioned before, the game constantly limits the player's options despite presenting itself as an incredibly deep RPG. The problem is that this "depth" often reflects only the way the developers expect you to solve situations instead of allowing different approaches that thousands of players might naturally come up with. Sometimes your character's abilities can't even be used in situations where they would make perfect sense. One example is the conflict between the kobolds and the mites creatures, where dialogue offers no opportunity to use Charisma at all. Instead, everything depends on your character's alignment. Apparently, the developers thought it was more important for a group of not particularly intelligent kobolds to know whether you're Lawful Good than whether you're actually capable of convincing them through persuasion. Another issue is the sheer amount of text thrown at you from the very beginning. The game dumps so much lore on the player that it almost completely kills the pacing. Your companions are ready to tell you their entire life stories the moment you ask about their past. It feels strange because your character barely knows these people, yet they're already sharing all of their deepest traumas and personal experiences. It would have felt much more natural if their stories unfolded gradually over the first half of the game as your relationships developed. The writing could also have benefited from much stronger editing. Many conversations could easily be cut in half without losing any important information, but it feels like the developers never made that a priority. I could keep listing problems, but my conclusion is simple. Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a game made for experienced Pathfinder tabletop fans or for people who are willing to spend hundreds of hours learning an extremely complicated ruleset. If you're new to Pathfinder and you're wondering whether you should give it a try, but you don't want to spend dozens of hours studying mechanics before you can actually enjoy playing, then this game probably isn't for you. And it certainly wasn't for me, because instead of rewarding my time with enjoyable gameplay, it spent that time forcing me to wrestle with its own systems.
I loved this game. So much to say but I don't have the wherewithal to comment yet. May come back and write some more later.
