As you can see from the amount of time I´ve played this (flawed) masterpiece, I absolutly love this game. It´s such a good CRPG, even though I will admit that it can be a times unbelievably hard and quite complicated to learn. The Story and Dialogue are in my humble opinion also amazing.
As a DnD noob who only played a couple of other games in the genre (Pillars of Eternity, Temple of Elemental Evil, Drakensang) PK has been the best experience by far. PK is NOT noobie friendly and will actively punish you for not knowing sh*t, so you better effing learn and adapt. And that's a good thing. Highly recommend to everyone who isn't afraid of a challenge and can handle frustrating game design.
Très bon contenu !
영지물이라니 맛있거든요..
This game would have been great if not for the fact that it is horribly balanced with no way to run from encounters. Combined with the fact that encounters are unavoidable. Combined with the fact that fixing all of the issues requires modding the game and losing achievements. If you actively played through this game without save scum and somehow managed to be level 20+ giga OP enemies as a level 3, good for you. Honestly ♥♥♥♥ this game
Caveat - Kind of recommended The game is great in a lot of aspects. The Kingdom management system and story (various storylines along with the main story) are fantastic and really, really fun. I think the game's big letdown is being created using the old Pathfinder TTrpg system. It was fine for its time, but game design has come a longgg way since then and it doesn't hold up. There are a few other small issues with the game but those could easily be overlooked. If you aren't familiar with Pathfinder or at least D&D 3rd edition, there will be a STEEP learning curve while you try to figure out what is happening during combat or character building.
Pathfinder: Kingmaker is already shaping up to be a solid fantasy CRPG, even though I am only around 20 hours into the game. I will update this review once I have finished it, but so far it has managed to keep my interest with its world, atmosphere, music, and classic tabletop-inspired structure. It is clearly a game made for people who enjoy deeper RPG systems, fantasy adventuring, and the feeling of slowly carving out your place in a dangerous world. Sound & Music - 8/10 The fantasy-medieval music is one of the stronger parts of the experience so far. It fits the tone of the game well and helps sell the feeling of traveling through a classic tabletop-inspired fantasy world. The spell sound effects are satisfying, and the monster sounds help bring combat encounters to life. There is a good sense of atmosphere when exploring, fighting, or moving through different areas of the world. That said, I do wish more of the dialogue interactions were fully voice acted. I am not entirely sure what the proper term is, but the parts where you chat with people and go through longer conversations could benefit from more VO. This was also a complaint I had with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader (I know this game came before, but the point still stands), and it is something that can make longer dialogue-heavy sections feel a bit less engaging than they otherwise could. Especially if you have dyslexia and/or ADHD, it can be a slog to read through the same sentence again and again because you lose attention. Visuals & Art Direction - 8/10 I really enjoy the fantasy style of the Pathfinder TTRPG, and Owlcat has done a great job translating the artwork and monster designs from the tabletop RPG into the video game format. The creatures feel recognizable, the environments have that classic fantasy adventuring charm, and the overall look of the game does a good job of making the world feel like a proper campaign setting. It is not the most visually impressive RPG ever made, but the art direction carries it well. The game has a strong identity, and the monster designs in particular help make encounters feel more connected to the Pathfinder tabletop roots. Story & Writing - 7/10 So far, the story has my interest. It has the feeling of a proper fantasy campaign, with political intrigue, wilderness exploration, dangerous enemies, and a growing sense that your choices may matter as the adventure continues. I am still early in the game, but I am curious to see where the story develops and how the kingdom-building side of things ties into the larger narrative. At this point, the writing has done enough to keep me interested, but not enough yet to fully win me over. I will need to see more before I can properly judge the full story. Gameplay & Mechanics - 6.5/10 The combat is solid, but nothing too out of the ordinary so far. You can choose between real-time with pause and turn-based combat, which is a very welcome option. Having both styles available lets you play in the way that feels best for the situation. Some encounters feel smoother in real-time, while tougher fights benefit from the control and precision of turn-based mode. The systems are somewhat deep, and there is a lot of room for character-building and party customization. However, the moment-to-moment combat has not completely hooked me yet. It works, but it feels very much like a traditional CRPG combat system without doing much that feels especially exciting early on. The world exploration is interesting, but also slightly tedious. Traveling around the map gives the adventure a proper sense of scale, but it can also feel slow at times. Random encounters, travel time, and resource management help make the world feel dangerous, but they can also interrupt the pacing. I have not gotten to interact much with the barony mechanic yet, so I cannot fully judge it at this stage. It seems like it could become one of the more interesting parts of the game once it opens up properly, especially if it adds a stronger sense of ownership and consequence to the story. Conclusion Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a solid fantasy CRPG so far, but after 20 hours I am not completely sold yet. The music, atmosphere, monster design, and tabletop-inspired worldbuilding are doing a lot of heavy lifting, and the story has managed to keep me interested enough to continue. The combat is functional, but it has not done anything especially surprising yet, and the world exploration can feel a bit tedious. The biggest drawbacks so far are the pacing, the slightly slow overworld travel, and the lack of voice acting in many dialogue-heavy interactions. Still, the game has a strong foundation, and I am curious to see how the story and barony systems develop as I continue. This is an early review, and I will update it once I finish the game. Current Score: 72/100
