Pathfinder: Kingmaker is an unpolished gem. It has a lot of depth and ambition, but also clear flaws. There are still bugs, and some encounters feel unfair — especially if you don’t fully understand the Pathfinder system. Even as someone who plays a lot of CRPGs, this game punished me hard for not knowing the rules well enough. It does not hold your hand. If you’re new to Pathfinder mechanics, don’t be afraid to look up guides and follow character builds for both your main character and companions. It genuinely makes the experience much smoother. The biggest issue for me is the companion AI. It’s honestly pretty brain-dead. For most of the game it’s manageable, but when the difficulty spikes in later chapters, it becomes a real problem. You have to micromanage everything to survive, which can be exhausting. That said, the game offers great depth, meaningful choices, strong build variety, and satisfying tactical combat once you understand the system. It’s not perfectly balanced, and it’s definitely not polished, but if you enjoy complex CRPGs and don’t mind doing some homework, there’s a lot to love here. A solid 7/10 — frustrating at times, but rewarding if you’re willing to invest the effort.
A true rpg where choices actually make a difference and you can feel the consequences of your actions
Muito bom !!! Falta a tradução oficial.
This might be one of the best introductions to Pathfinder First Edition, the table top. Rules are not 1 to 1, there is some variation, but the core values of the system are there in videogame form. Sadly, Wrath of the Righteous is the superior game, but I don't think Kingmaker has to be skipped. It has fewer options and combat is simpler and there's nothing wrong with that. Kingmaker is a game I can play in real time mode and not have to worry about being suboptimal on core difficulty. And fewer options for a newcomer means that they can read better the game and make decisions. That being said, the game could make use of quality of life improvements made in the sequel, things like better shop and inventory UI, camera and overall a more clear presentation. Pacing is also a problem, there are going to be times where you are just passing days waiting for something to happen. Also it has some bugs, more notable are things like, casting a spell or an ability on turn mode, or having a bunch of npcs join the combat, the game just stops and you have to change into real time mode and back to turn mode to unstuck itself. It didn't happen a lot, but it shows more in the endgame and with crunchier fights. Overall, I've enjoyed my time replaying the game. Outside of the PF shpere it is a step game and the sequel is even more so, but if you are in for feature packed rpgs, with a lot of choices in combat, story and character building, this one will satisfy you.
My favourite game of all time
I had an itch for a good ol' CRPG after playing Baldur's Gate 3 for the 10th+ time and remembered I had this game sitting untouched in my library, I overall enjoyed Pathfinder: Kingmaker with a few caveats. The story is decent with nothing too noteworthy. Some parts have full voice acting while majority doesn't, leaving you speedreading through dialog to get to the next screen. There are decisions that seem to impact your ending, but it's more to make your playthrough feel different than your friend's rather than multiple playthroughs. Regarding gameplay, things are pretty straightforward for any CRPG veteran. The game has a nice option of toggling turn-based mode and real-time with pause (RTWP) on the fly. I highly recommend playing majority of the game in turn-based because you have more control of your attacks and can better understand the mechanics. It is nice to have RTWP when fighting trash mobs to help speed things up, however, I feel like playing this way didn't feel as satisfying or rewarding until my party hit level 6 and weren't missing attacks as often. The game also has several ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanics bringing it down. 1. There will always be a looming timed quest at every part of the story. If you fail to address these quests before the timers run out, it's game over, even if you're 90% done. 2. The kingdom management sections of the game start off really straightforward, but if you don't stay on top of leveling your advisors, they will be too weak for later sections of the game, causing your kingdom to fail and trigger a game over. 3. The game loves to give your party permanent debuffs that can only be treated with "Restore" or "Greater Restore" spells. Your party members that can cast the spell need a currency to do so. You can also purchase scrolls and potions, but this can also become expensive. The mechanic gets old real quick. 4. Several side quests are extremely obtuse to solve. Many of them also have wrong map markers, which makes you waste time from the literal countdown timer that was mentioned earlier. You will most likely need a wiki open to help solve a few steps where the UX was just poorly designed. The good news regarding these mechanics is that most of them can be addressed by playing with either custom settings or on an easier difficulty level. If you can get past these flaws, enjoy controlling your party of 6 heroes and feeling that dopamine hit of a well-placed fireball destroying an enemy group two or three times your size.
As someone who has beaten Dos 1 & 2 , pillars 2 and this. (I am now on WOTR), I can highly recommend playing this on turn based. It really feels like a D&D adventure with lots of variety and so much to explore. It took me around 300 hours to explore every location and beat the game (I have 450 on record but I left my computer on a few times). If you love crpgs I would highly recommend playing this before BG3 or WOTR because it is an older CRPG so you have something to look foward to, and the game is still great. One huge plus about pathfinder is you can toggle turn based on or off so the easy slog fights can quickly be done too.
