Looking at these reviews, it would seem to you that kingmaker is one of the worst games ever published. That might be true, but not to me. I thought it was pretty good! Yes, it pales in comparison to wrath in most ways. Yes, its almost unplayable without mods to speed up the move speed or allow you to rotate the camera. Yes, it drags on way too long in its second half. But beyond that? I think it's a decently solid owlcat game. I think I generally enjoy the companions here more than those in wrath. They feel a little more vanilla compared to wrath's over the top roster, but I vastly prefer that. Too many wrath companion quests end up with a super important and terrifying demon that is hyped up for the entire game (ie Daeran, Lann, Woljif) and ends up being a pushover mechanically. In Kingmaker, you have characters like Nok Nok. Nothing like that in wrath. The early acts of kingmaker have some special sauce in them in terms of exploration that I think wrath is missing, but this review is too long already and I don't care enough about the game to make it any longer. I forgot to mention the time limits, though. Going in I thought they were going to be brutal, but no. They are laughably unimpactful. Yes, they do end the game if you fail them, but as long as you attempt to tackle the main quests when they pop up and aren't going in the exact opposite direction of the map, they might as well not exist. I almost forgot to mention kingdom management, too. Yeah, it's bad. It's too simple to actually be interesting and compelling, but too repetitive and tedious for me to shrug it off. Deducting one point from the score for it. 7/10
Was it painful? Yes. Was it also one of the best games I've ever played? Definitely.
I want to walk you through why I dropped this game. I came back to this after playing through it many years ago, looking forward to trying it again. I've played a few CRPG's, Baldurs, Rogue trader and the other more recent pathfinder game. I tried starting this and quickly the fun gave way to frustration. Stat reductions from enemies right from the start, swarms that require AOE methods to deal with. The seven flasks given for this quest are not enough as you will will be lucky to hit one out of seven throws. Oh look, a random event just gave me a permanent -2 to my constitution without even the slightest of hints that an action would lead to this. It just wasn't fun and the more recent CRPG's seem to do the start a lot better. It's a shame but first impressions really are everything, especially for a game that's going to suck dozens of hours of my time.

Despite its flaws I've been having fun with the game and considered it way better than POE 1 and 2. Up until the final chapter, which was SO BAD that it killed all my enjoyment of this game. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it on story mode, the fights and traversing the last map were just too tedious and boring. I'd rather replay BG3 or DOS2 for the 20th time.
It is a fun game. It has a pretty good yet flexible story line and requires a bit of strategy.
