Story, rule system, character building, world, lore, it's all good. The Kingdom management system is a bit janky and unforgiving, but I even like that. I've put so much time into this game, and regret none of it. You can have voiced companions, or make a full party of your own created mercs, or any mix inbetween. So much replayability.
I want to walk you through why I dropped this game. I came back to this after playing through it many years ago, looking forward to trying it again. I've played a few CRPG's, Baldurs, Rogue trader and the other more recent pathfinder game. I tried starting this and quickly the fun gave way to frustration. Stat reductions from enemies right from the start, swarms that require AOE methods to deal with. The seven flasks given for this quest are not enough as you will will be lucky to hit one out of seven throws. Oh look, a random event just gave me a permanent -2 to my constitution without even the slightest of hints that an action would lead to this. It just wasn't fun and the more recent CRPG's seem to do the start a lot better. It's a shame but first impressions really are everything, especially for a game that's going to suck dozens of hours of my time.
First 11 hours were fun. Then the game changed to building villages and towns. Everything became a narrative. No more actual combat. Goals not well defined. Game needs work.
This is a great game. Most of these negative reviews come from people who don't seem to understand or accept that there is a difficulty slider that you can adjust if you're too impatient to actually learn the game mechanics. Too hard for you? Turn down the difficulty. Too much reading? Go play CoD or something. This is truly a great game, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a RPG with deep story and NPCs that are believable and likeable.
This is NOT a game for beginners. If you aren't a master in TTRPGs or Pathfinder then don't even try. Go play some RL games to see if you'll like this, but even then understand this game borders on CBT. It's an interesting game and one that I personally will struggle to complete but I CANNOT in good faith recommend this to someone unaware of the pain they're apart to suffer through. DO NOT stray from the "Normal" difficulty preset if you're starting this game either. I did on my first run and not sure what I did but the Level 2 Chaff Enemy had 19 AC (Not really high in Pathfinder but very high at level 2 for a common enemy!) This feels like a real TTRPG game in all the worst ways, like a game being run by a min-maxing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DM that gives zero ♥♥♥♥♥ about player enjoyment. Timers? Check. Hidden secondary objectives that aren't disclosed? Check. Unbalanced encounters? Check. Enemies being forced at you for innocuous decisions that you are absolutely incapable of dealing with? Check. Other characters making up your party that aren't what you need but are what other people want to play chosen psuedo-randomly for you? Check! Let's just look at Swarms. An enemy TYPE that the game throws at you in the SECOND encounter after the tutorial. This enemy type is immune to everything except AOE spells (which you get one, maybe two of at low levels) and CONSUMABLE bombs which need to be thrown. This enemy type auto-hits targets that occupy the same space and INFECTS them, basically stunning them for a turn while dealing damage throughout. Remember those consumable bombs? Well you still have to roll to hit them. If you miss, you deal 1-2 damage so on average you'll need 6-8 bombs to kill ONE swarm. (The game throws 3 at you at once) Oh but don't worry, the game tells you torches are alright at dealing with them and gives you a couple. The kicker? When using a torch you're trying to hit a 27 AC at level 2. (This is crazy.) Even better? When you hit with a torch, you deal ONE damage. Neat. Almost the same thing with magic spells. Remember that ONE aoe that your character might get? It still has to roll to hit and there's NO garauntee that it will kill the swarm. (There's also 3 more in this dungeon, so you only get to use this AOE on one single enemy) Sure you COULD come back later but this is LITERALLY the FIRST sidequest you're given in the game. Also just like DnD, you can make a seemingly harmless decision (sleeping at a camp randomly somewhere) and spawn an enemy that can't be damaged through normal means and AOE fears your entire party, forcing them to run around and be opportunity attacked several times to death while you watch helplessly! Even better than all this? That seemingly innocuous decision to sleep at that camp? Well it OVERWRITES the last autosave you had (usually upon entering an area) and FORCES you to commit to what could unironically be a total softlock, meaning you now get to lose potentially HOURS of progress if you didn't happen to save beforehand! The game seems fun and the kingdom mechanics (Which I haven't reached dealing with all this CBT) seem interesting but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it difficult to play without getting extremely frustrated.
Well, yeah, ofc I recommend this....
