2 Minute Video Review → https://youtu.be/CzKKLRBltGk Paper Valley is a great example of a game with a simple concept, but with excellent execution. The entire game is about throwing paper airplanes at targets. You’re surrounded by paper airplanes that continually orbit you, almost like butterflies. Grab an airplane, throw it, and then steer the airplane by tilting and aiming your controller. After hitting a target you can then grab the purple airplane and throw it to the new location to teleport there. Now at first that may not sound very interesting, but the gameplay is incredibly addicting. I was surprised at how much time had passed and how lost I got in the gameplay. That’s probably somewhat due to the fact that the environments and sound are beautifully designed, it’s a fun and colorful world to play and dwell in. If you’re in the mood for a relaxing and casual game, then I recommend it.

Gameplay mechanics are incredibly simple. You have different paper planes floating around you: grab them and throw at different targets. You can control the movement of the plane by tilting your hand slowly. Planes come in different sizes: some are smaller and easier to control, others are faster and you can throw them further. Once you hit all targets, the new area is unlocked. You can teleport around the level using a special purple plane. There is no free-roam mode. There are 8 levels with gradually increasing difficulty. There is really not much else, this a target practice with paper planes instead of guns, but yet the gameplay is somehow mesmerizing. This experience reminded me of the game “Flower”. Just like in “Flower”, you start in a bleak world that grows more vibrant the further you progress. Paper Valley is a very relaxing experience with nice graphics and music. There is no narrative, no enemies, and no time limit. It has very simple controls and it is not very challenging. $13 is a little high in my opinion, but the game itself is very enjoyable. The game takes us into an unfounded (?) desolate world, where we are supposed to bring color back to the paper ace. The real story in Paper Valley was not revealed to me, but nevertheless I had a lot of fun throwing the different planes on the lollipop-like targets. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have played it through. It's not always easy to handle the paper planes, but once you get the hang of it, you can make some clever turns with some of them and still hit the target in the end. This is done by moving the controllers slightly after takeoff, so the paper plane changes its flight path. The graphics are kept in a bobbly comic style. That fits the game quite well. In a realistic environment Paper Valley would probably not work. If you are in the mood for relaxed paper plane throwing, you can use it here, especially in the sale. The game is not badly programmed (well, once it got stuck in the loading screen) and looks quite good, therefore a positive rating - and I played through it. This is a nice casual VR game. I would recommend this game for kids or for those who are still getting used to thier VR headsets.
1st Impressions // Oculus + Touch // GTX 1060 (6GB): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V-TURvAris My Thoughts: Stunning graphics and impressive physics make for a relaxing experience. But, if you're expecting a challenge beyond aiming and throwing your paper planes, you might be disappointed in the lack of a real challenge. I think an opportunity has been missed here! I cannot fault the beauty, wonder and physics of this game, but I was surprised by the lack of a challenge. I was looking for an arcade mode, with limited paper planes for you to use in order to solve the puzzles, I did not get this which is a shame.... At one point I remember thinking "ohhh I only have 1 plane left, better make this count" I missed the target expecting to be teleported back to the last waypoint, but no the game gave me an endless supply of planes. (See my Video above for more details!)
Really enjoying this game! Very casual/relaxing, and has some nice puzzle-type features where you have to adjust your throwing strategy. This could have been boring like a dart-game, but this team really added some excellent functionality in terms of control. Might possibly be my favorite VR experience so far, and I've had my Rift since 2016. The soundtrack is sparse and atmospheric. I thought I would only play through a couple levels to see if I liked it, but here I am 4 hours later and at the end of level 6. Oddly satisfying hitting the targets once you get the hang of the controls/throwing. Highly recommended if you're looking for a cooldown after BSaber etc!
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
I'm giving a neutral recommendation. I had some nice relaxing moments. But I also experienced a lot of frustration. After almost 2 hours, what I really feel is my right shoulder hurting like hell. There's just too much repetition in this game. There's only so many times you can throw a paper airplane. There is *some* variety, just not enough. The levels allegedly look different, but I didn't notice that much difference between one and the others. And it's not something that's memorable to me as I've already forgotten the details of the any of the environments. I remember rocks, grass, cliffs, bushes, and water. It might as well be procedurally generated worlds. There's a few different types of paper airplanes. The blue/purple teleport one is the best and easiest to throw. It's almost a can't miss throw. Several of the paper airplanes just aren't that good however. Most of the throws are easy. But some of them are very difficult and required multiple attempts. I would hit a target on the first throw and that feels good. But then I'd have to throw it 10 times on the next. Doesn't feel good. And although you're being guided from target to target most of the time. Suddenly you're left in the middle of nowhere with no targets visible. So you have to backtrack and try to find one you may have missed. On some parts of some levels, the intended path is not obvious at all. For a game that's going for a zen like experience, there's a few targets that you really have to throw out your shoulder to get enough momentum to get your paper airplane past the wind gusts. That's fine one or twice, but when you have to do it like 10 times in a row, then it's frustration time. The visuals are okay. The sounds are okay. Throwing the paper airplanes sure does feel like a nice change of pace at first. But as 15 minutes turns into 2 hours, all those good feelings go away. Mine did. Rate 5/10. I recommend only playing the game 20-30 minutes at a time and taking a break at the first end of a level you get to . You'll start to hate the game if you play longer. Buy deep sale 50% off or more. Really close to giving a negative review on this one.
Clean graphics, simple game mechanics!
