Pandora: First Contact is a science fiction 4X turn-based strategy game on a planetary scale. Our Earth has been exhausted and colonial attempts on other planetary bodies have been in vain. Finally, after decades of exploration, an interstellar probe has brought promise of a new world.

The game in concept is not a bad one... It just could have been so much better. I will start by contradicting the normal reviews, as Pandora nails all the features Civ Beyond Earth never could, with a strong balancing act of dealing with the new world, it's wildlife, and all the your competitors. The game play is actually interesting, as you are also given free reign to design the units you need, build the deathstacks you want, and play around with city-building in a much more straightforward manor. (Whereas Civ Beyond Earth seems to feel the need to make you micro-manage and specialize to stand a chance.) That said: Any neat feature this game has is harshly overshadowed by (what I believe is) some of the worst AI programming ever seen in a Turn based game... Never before I have seen AI so bi-polarly over-aggressive. On one hand, it makes them easy to manage once you know how to stack an army... As they will throw death-stacks at you, for you to flank and obliterate well designed troops and bombardments. On the other, it makes them a complete nuisance as they will constantly be spamming with deals you don't want, wars you don't need, peace-deals literally 2 turns later, and an innate hatred for anything you do, no matter how far away from their borders, or how little it otherwise impacts them. If it were up to me, I would lock these Devs in a room with the Beyond Earth Devs, until they both agreed to make the good Sci-Fi Civ everyone wants. Because they both had good ideas, but whiffed the ball by less than a millimeter when it came down to game design... Until then though. We're doomed to be "So close... but not good enough." Which makes both games a disappointing waste of money.
I avoided this game for 12 years because of its Mixed Steam rating ... that was a big mistake! I have so much fun and it's becoming one of my all-time favorites, even beating Civilization Beyond Earth for me. People's main complaint is the aggressive AI, but I think it’s predictable: keep your military strong and factions will respect you; fall behind and expect a dogpile (yeah, even your most trusted ally will turn on you). Combined with randomized tech trees (!), deep unit customization (!!), and a strong Alpha Centauri vibe (!!!), the game is tense, rewarding, and underrated. Don’t let the review score scare you off. The best 4X strategy game you've never heard of.
Yeah, so I don't normally do reviews but this one needs it. So, to start, its a great Civ beyond earth feeling game with a couple more factions. Gameplay is pretty straight forward. No complaints there, tech growth results in you making units how you want with the upgrades you discover otherwise you wont have units using them. So it gives you some work on that end. The bad. was playing on Easy, island map had things going well for me trying to do more of a scientific victory and I had an ally on my team. Rest of the AI we solo. Ya know, give myself the edge and support as I learn the nuances of this game. About a 100 turns into the game and suddenly for no reason an AI declares war. Whatever I have some units prepped just in case. They swamped me with units far stronger than mine. Then about 5 turns later another AI declares war. Then 2 turns later another. In 10 turns all AI were at war with me for no reason and I was crushed. I was just on my own island minding my scientific business. No warning, no cause, total all AI declare war with troops well beyond mine. No diplomacy screen to even talk to them about calling a cease fire, or at least none that I could find. And my ally was useless in any kind of support. So the reviews regarding cheating or over powered AI who are just warmongers, even the corpo faction, are true and really wish there was a patch or mod to tone that down. A mod workshop would make this game better. So, even with this so called patch some mentioned the Devs did, it seems it didn't fix it. I would say if you are a glutton for never being able to win, not without at least 5 AI factions as team mates, this is the game for you.
Good idea and some fun gameplay mechanics but the AI is utterly broken. The AI dogpile you, your AI partner does nothing to support you. Basically play this to get wrecked by AI. It could be good if the AI wasn't the greatest military leader of all time.
Well, i saw this game in a store a few years back then, and bought it because it looked cool. Its one of those game which had a manual in the case, with a lot of lore, like the good ol times back in the early to late 90s. Gameplay wise: its a nice little 4x game, with a cool plot. If u like alpha centauri or Sid Meier's games, this is for u.
It's a somewhat decent game, sure the AI is incredibly stupid and aggresive but lore wise maybe that is because companies are in charge of people and their decisions are not always the best, It's good for some mindless fun, if you want a game with more depth then you should probably get CiV: Beyond Earth The good: -Unit builder, can make custom units albeit not with much varriation -Multiple unit stacking (they still attack one at a time so this somewhat seems pointless as you become a prime orbital barrage target) -Lots of planet wide events that keep you on your toes The bad: -The AI is incredibly bad, at one point you're minding your own buisness then 2 of them declare war because you refused praise from an AI's ally, they march in with their armies, get demolished and then make every single AI in the game dennounce you? Fine I guess -There are unexplained resource drains on your empire ( I was sitting with a negative mineral income half the game but It affected literally nothing, all it said "production" which means little) -Automation does not work, I specifically told my workers to not build Fungi farms, and yet they continue doing so The ugly: -The characters are bland and uninspiring, even a cardboard box has more personality -While there is an apocalyptic event going on the AI will still prioritize fighting you instead of it's own survival -Everything just comes in 3 tiers ( Grey, Blue, Gold ) there is no branching paths as everything is just a straight up upgrade But despite everything I found Pandora a fresh breath of air and somewhat decently fun, can't wait for their upcoming new game ZEPHON It's recommended to get this game on sale or the same place I got it for 2.50$ in a cd key site
Quite a solid game, well put together, but very hard. Probably the closest I've seen to an AC remake, with a lot of that old school vibe to it. I haven't managed to beat it yet - its very tricky.
