I liked the graphics and story, and enjoyed most of the gameplay, but there were some things I found frustrating (some mild spoilers): - Impossible to find collectibles that would take years to find without a guide. Some walls you can walk/fly through, really out of the way walls you have to bomb, or roll through to discover, it's not enjoyable for the player to have to follow a walkthrough. - Some of the puzzles and bosses were broken, it felt like the developer hadn't tested them thoroughly enough. E.g.
pirate ship
bomb puzzle and some bosses you could just stay in the corner and shoot and not get hit. - Backtracking feels unnatural, and sometimes the camera position was wrong if going backwards through a level. Sometimes you can get stuck in an area unless you carry one of your friends or drop them; it literally blocks you from moving up/down to the next screen. They should have just kept the camera central over the character so that enemies don't attack you from off screen. -
Hats from the shop fall off as soon as you get hit, so seems pointless having them.
- Swarms of enemies coming at you at once, and causing you to die was frustrating at times,
e.g. mosquitoes in jungle area, and those strings of spikey floating bug things in the thorn bush areas.
- Grab magnetizes to the characters instead of the vegetables/fruits when trying to eat, so you have to throw the character far away to grab fruit/veg. Same goes for other objects in the environment you have to grab. - No map for a game like this is insane. So many times I forget how to get to certain areas, because there's no logic to it, and the central areas are similar-looking so you can't rely on the cues in the background or environment to help navigate. - Disagree with some of the design choices in the game;
gnomes can hear you fly but can't hear you walk; owls are famously quiet at flying! (Spoiler) You can't fly near the end of the game due to the thin atmosphere, but can suddenly fly again at the last boss for no reason.
- No achievements for beating bosses, unlocking items, finding the lost animals and completing the game. I enjoyed it overall, but these things were annoying, and it would have been more enjoyable if these were addressed.
Ever since I saw the video of Dunkey playing this game at EVO like +10y ago and being full of praise about it, I wanted to play and experience it. Storywise it was confusing at some points and the ending was... something, indeed. But you can feel the love that was poured into this game, for sure. Dunkey didn't lie. Can only recommend.
What I liked: Art and music is beautiful. The characters are charming. The aesthetics really carry this game. What I didn't like: -No journal, map, or log to help you remember where you were going. There's a show reminder button but it's not much help when it says stuff like "find thing!" Thankfully the games isn't too large otherwise navigating would be a nightmare. -Some bossfights/action sequences felt really unpolished with some having really wonky camerawork or screen transitions and can be really disorienting. -Combat, puzzles, and platforming are rather bland. While the gameplay didn't leave a great impression, it was a pretty inexpensive way to experience a beautiful game.
Charming game. Short and direct and doesn't overstay its welcome. Wouldn't mind if movement were a tick faster but it's enjoyable enough with some neat puzzles and some cool areas thanks to the top-notch level and world details.
Conclusion: Excellent job D-Pad studio, wish you all the best! Totally recommended for its experience! The most important thing for me as a Muslim: This game almost has no religious violations (Shirk, nudity, sexual themes, and all other dirty stuff), so I am not afraid to share this game with others with no fear of doing something Haram (I hope all games do that). Afterwards, the things I liked about this game was: 1. The art style and animation are excellent (Great job for what you have done). 2. Most main characters are noble, polite, and not arrogant (especially Otus). 3. Dialogue and story aren't too complicated and forked for a fantasy game. 4. The ending is so emotional for someone who played the whole game and reads the dialogue, and wished for little more time further. 5. On the other hand, things I didn't like that much about it: 1. The shop is relatively pointless, and isn't necessary to get all trinkets (items). 2. I wanted a simple map to let me know where I am (at least in big and enormous places). 3. Some texts doesn't pause and let me read it carefully (or give me a little more time to understand more what is happening and being said). And thanks for reading!
It's an alright game but there are several things that just make it mid, if you want to play don't be expecting much
Sad to say I got this for free like 10 years ago and to think and I'm just now playing it. Not a long game can be beat within 8-10 hours but its a fun platformer/puzzle type game with an interesting story. Always rooting for an underdog! If you can get it for free like I did or extremely cheap then do it.
