"Over The Void" ist ein kleines atmosphärisches First-Person Exploration Game.
When the game start with a AZERTY keyboard layout you know are off to a good start (has rebindable keys but the standard should always be WASD), when you manage to get stuck between objects twice in less than 5 minutes you know it is time to give up on the game. The developers promised a Linux port "soon" back in 2015 but that never happened. Works fine with Proton (Proton 4.2-1) at least.
I wanted to enjoy this game but I couldn't get past the gameplay. I wanted to explore the game as a visual experience but the mechanics for exploration and progression are counter-intuitive to this simple enjoyment. You create platforms just in front of you, using them to touch buttons that allow you to progress. I found myself staring at these platforms, attempting to manouevre to these stupid buttons instead of taking in the graphical delights around me. I didn't even finish what is probably a short game. Honestly, it would have been better if the platform just appeared under you, instead of right in front of you. That way you could move without having to target the camera at a good place for a platform, allowing you to explore, enjoy the gameplay and, most improtantly, the psychedelic world. Unfortunate, really. Unfortunate.
https://youtu.be/4ESN89jrR0U Combining awkward controls with random seeming level design results in a mystery meat core loop of exploring landmark less voids.
This barely counts as a game, it's more a tech-demo. By looking down and left-clicking, you can spawn a platform that you can walk on, or bounce on using right-click. The objective is to touch some buttons scattered around the level while repetitive techno music plays in the background. That's it. That's the entire game. The game would be trivially easy, except for some really annoying bugs: • The collision detection is terrible, making it easy to get stuck in a corner or phase through walls. In fact, it's so bad that touching any wall while falling causes you to stop falling, and sometimes even crawl up it. • If you right-click too many times, you shoot up into the air through the ceiling, and are permanently stuck above the level, requiring a restart. • As a testament to how bad the UX is, the default movement buttons in the English-language version are z-q-s-d. Rather than change the defaults to something reasonable, the developer added a passive-aggressive note telling the player that the controls "can be changed in the launcher, mmkay?" In short, skip this one.
Trippy and fun puzzle game. Worth the price and very enjoyable.
I enjoyed visuals and soundtrack a lot! For sure, game is not for everyone, mainly for artsy people. Totally recommended playing after watching the movie "Enter the Void". Dreamy, trippy and beautiful journey. Go collect all 50 orbs. 8/10
a lovely experience
