it took BitWave eight patches, but it's become a respecatble (and the only) port of OutZone there currently is. If you were a fan, get this one!

A masterpiece, and a lesson of good game design. It belongs to the toaplan big 3(along batsugun and dogyum). An hybrid of shmup and top-down perspective (like commando), but deeply is more a shmup. The game has a energy bar that is always reducing (like wonderboy) and forces you to go forward and pickup energy items to recover therefore the action gets frenetic. You have a button for bomb and another for shot . You have a few types of shoot but mostly of the times you will use a triple shot forward and a single shot that you can aim at any direction. in modern games single shot is controlled by twinstick or in worst case scenario holding the button for fixed shoot (like shook troopers). this games uses a type of control that should be obsolete where you move the joystick in the direction you want to fire and shoot (like commando) , but the level design is so good because you will use in tight corridors (instead of big open areas) and part of the fun of the game is struggling with those controls. It shouldn´t work, but it works and above all is fun. The bullet patterns are simple but fun. the graphics are good reminding a cyberpunk world with beautiful pixel art where enemyes big and mettalic.The enemy variety is great, with different behavihors. The music is great. Now about the port, it started bad, but now they updated and fix most of the problems. Sound emulation is still not perfect (but ok), no input lag. And there are a ton of acessibility options that fix some problems/imperfections that the original had. You have a autofire option, you can choose the size of the hitbox (original game had a large hitbox), etc. The price is good. And while bitwave does not reach the level of m2 of bells % whistles, when it comes to the basics, and what it is important comes very close (except in the sound emulation) and considering the price i think i could not ask for more. Buy it to support the company so they can port other games.
