I really wish I liked it because on the paper it's 100% a game for me but I'm forced to admit I just don't. First of all it's not detective work, you just drop pieces of information in a database hoping it makes the story progress. Because you're not technically forced to drop all the information in the database, you quickly try to have an impact on the story's progression by keeping some info to yourself, but the story only progresses when specific info is used and you never know which info is necessary or not so you can't really make informed choices on what to give Orwell and what to not. I quickly find myself stuck with the story not progressing because I've decided to keep a piece of information that's mandatory for the story to continue and so I have to start from the top and review everything which is tedious and drop random bits of information I've kept until I find the one that was necessary for the story to continue which means I really can't choose what I keep or don't keep, or I straight up give all the info away from the start to not have to review everything later once I'm stuck which again means I can't choose what I keep or don't keep. There seems to be a system of highlighting the files where there still is relevant information but I don't understand how it works. Sometimes files are highlighted and there's nothing left on them and sometimes they aren't highlighted and there's still important things on them. It's very confusing. I also suspect the political messaging of the game is really not so subtle and just "violence is bad" with no nuance but I can't tell you for sure because I'm too frustrated with the gameplay to go to the end of the story at this point. My other issue with the writing that I just can't seem to get over is that it makes zero sense that people who are fighting surveillance would post on the internet about it with their full name and photo or extremely basic aliases. Not posting about your actions on the internet is activism 101.
"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even tacitly take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon all the apparatus and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all." - Mario Savio
Personally couldn't get into this one. No hate towards it but I can't recommend it to anyone either.
The idea is excellent: You're an operative tasked with monitoring the social media and activities of various individuals suspected of or likely to carry out terrorist attacks, with the goal of stopping them. Initially, everything seems quite obvious and trivial, but it soon begins to explore gray areas and presents very interesting moral dilemmas. After playing through it a couple of times, you become aware of the intricate plot and how linear it is, but during your first playthrough, it's practically imperceptible. It manages to create a strong sense of decision-making and truly draw you into its narrative. You genuinely feel like a spy because perhaps that's exactly what your job would look like if you were one. You would stop seeing people as individuals and begin to see them as pixels. That's the magic of Orwell. The only important point to note is that it's heavily dependent on the language you speak. If the game isn't in a language you're fluent in, I recommend not playing it, as the game demands a lot from you in interpreting very specific data and dialogue, which could cause you to miss some excellent details that enhance the experience.
