Oninaki, developed by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix, is a contemplative action RPG that dives deeply into themes of life, death, and the cycles that connect them. Players follow the story of Kagachi, a young Watcher whose duty is to guide wandering souls to their next reincarnation. The narrative explores heavy emotional and philosophical themes, balancing moments of intimate character development with broader reflections on the nature of existence. From the outset, the game establishes a somber yet compelling tone, creating an experience that is as much about emotional resonance as it is about gameplay. The combat system in Oninaki is one of its most distinctive features. Players can summon and switch between a variety of Daemons, each granting unique weapons and skills. This real-time combat mechanic encourages strategic thinking and adaptability, as different enemies and situations require different approaches. While the combat offers fluidity and variety initially, some players may find it becomes somewhat repetitive due to recurring enemy types and level layouts. Despite this, the system provides a satisfying sense of empowerment and flexibility, allowing players to experiment with different Daemon combinations and combat styles. Visually, the game presents a striking and melancholic world. The environments are rendered with a soft, almost watercolor-like aesthetic, lending an ethereal quality to forests, villages, and spectral landscapes. Character designs are thoughtful and detailed, reflecting the game's thematic focus on life, death, and emotion. The soundtrack, composed by Shunsuke Tsuchiya and Mariam Abounnasr, complements the visual style perfectly, blending haunting melodies with more subdued, reflective pieces. Together, the art and music create an immersive atmosphere that reinforces the game’s somber narrative and emotional undertones. Narratively, Oninaki tackles profound ideas about mortality, responsibility, and the consequences of one’s actions. Kagachi’s journey is both a personal story of loss and redemption and a broader meditation on the cycle of life and death. The story contains moments of quiet introspection as well as dramatic confrontations with moral dilemmas. Some players, however, may feel that certain plot developments are predictable or underexplored, leaving questions about character motivations or narrative consequences partially unanswered. Nevertheless, the game’s willingness to confront weighty philosophical themes sets it apart from more conventional action RPGs. Reception of Oninaki has been mixed, with praise often directed at its combat system, emotional depth, and artistic direction, while criticisms typically focus on gameplay repetitiveness and occasional narrative weaknesses. Its pacing and level design may feel uneven to some, yet the game succeeds in crafting a unique, contemplative experience that challenges players to think about the world and the souls inhabiting it. Despite its flaws, Oninaki is memorable for its willingness to explore somber themes in a meaningful and interactive way. Overall, Oninaki offers a reflective journey that blends action RPG mechanics with a story rich in emotional and philosophical content. While it may not appeal to players seeking fast-paced or endlessly varied gameplay, it excels at creating a meditative, atmospheric experience that lingers long after the game is over. For those drawn to thoughtful narratives, expressive visuals, and innovative combat systems, Oninaki provides a distinctive and compelling experience that examines life, death, and the bonds that endure between them. Decent story, but the gameplay is super repetitive and the combat is way too simple.
Disclaimer : This is based on my opinion, no hard feeling. Game has a good story line, characters, weapons, skills and environment. Don't expect the game mechanics is fluid like other good game. Repetitive features of enemy, NPC and maps makes this game looks bad, maybe Developer need to make improvements on that one. Worth to buy when there's discount, not at full price. But I will surely repeat to play this game again due to the decent story.
The game is quite good. If the character has full voiceover Making the characters jump and climb and explore the area would be great. The price is a little high, wait for the price to drop before deciding. Want more content? .The battle system is fun, if you add coordinated moves it will look really good.
