This game is not very good, and it's not very fun. Some people say that the story is the worst aspect. Those people are correct. It's a real downer. It's not "dark" or "depressing," which I could handle and likely enjoy. The story is minimal, low energy, and a downer. Some people say the combat is the worst aspect. Those people are correct. The combat is slow, really slow. Your attacks come out fast, but recovery frames can feel like they last forever. Enemies are fairly slow, but their attacks come out with no warning. Your animations feel sluggish, while enemy animations feel glitchy (what is with the wings on the butterfly-type enemies?). Some people say the PC port is the worst aspect. Those people are correct. I never really used the Steam Controller Configurator until this game. No game's forced me to map keyboard buttons to a controller until this one, because I couldn't switch Daemons with my default right stick controls. Some people say the keyboard/mouse controls are the worst aspect. Those people are correct. The game doesn't use the mouse at all. It expects you to hit J and K instead of just using left and right mouse buttons.
Conclusion
I bet this game at least feels better on Switch or PS4. It looks like it should be fun. Like a dark, depressing, modernized Secret of Mana or Seiken Densetsu 3 or something. But on PC, it feels really bad to play. I'd recommend Trinity Trigger over this game for a modernized top-down Mana-type game. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2176930/
Story is OK but the gameplay is boring. 1) It's very easy even when playing in hard mode "Maniac". Hard mode or easy mode don't have any effect to the AI, it only makes enemy sturdier and hit harder, while increasing the drop rate. 2) Maybe it's only me but most of the weapons are not interesting. They are too slow and not useful in most scenarios. For me, I only use Sword and maybe Twinblades for a change sometimes, supported by the passive skills of Axe and Fang. 3) The grind for soulstone is a long process that is so boring and painful, I'd suggest that you do it only after having "Soulstone++" on your weapons to increase the drop rate. By the time I have enough soulstone to unlock all memories, I am pretty much over leveled that I can beat everything (includes the final boss) easily in Hard mode. 4) There is an achievement for beating a secret boss at level 100 of a post game dungeon, with a boss at every 5 levels. It's basically the same maps, monsters and bosses that you have beaten in the story, nothing new and interesting. It is so easy that makes it ultimately boring to go through them all. I couldn't stand the pain and gave up at level 10. I am surprised to see 3.7% players obtaining this achievement. 5) It's not worth the original price. If you really want to play this game, get it at at least 70% discount.
I've now played and completed all 3 releases from Tokyo RPG Factory. I've wanted to play this due to the sad demise of the developer studios, the fact it was recently heavily discounted & that I really enjoyed their previous 2 releases. I'm gonna start by saying that this game is the bottom of the slippery slope in the negative trend that was this studio's output. I am Setsuna is one of my favourite games and perfectly captures the golden era of PS1 JRPGs, Lost Sphear was 'okay', definitely a step back from I am Setsuna but still enjoyable in its own right. Onianki decided to abandon the turn based combat altogether and goes for a more action orientated combat, that ultimately feels sluggish and slow paced. The photogenic visuals they've adopted completely washes out this studios graphical style and charm. There's remnants of previous games skill progression in terms of random 'weapon stones' and 'soul stones', which doesn't feel really all that well paced, it's also super grindy considering there's a total of 12 deamons to manifest. I didn't really feel invested in the story and was lost at times, much more so than the previous 2 entries where the story was paced well and told in a minimal but elaborate manner. I just didn't enjoy it at all. The characters lack depth or meaning and their interactions are so brief it brings little to be desired. And the music... its literally almost non existent. The OST for I am setsuna was literally peak and I still listen to it to this day and that game was released like a decade ago or something. Tldr: this game was the final nail in Toyko RPGS coffin. It fails to deliver on all points. The combat is dull, progression is slow, the story is as grey as it gets and ultimately fails to communicate its message effectively. Honestly, I don't even feel like this game wad worth it for £10, sonic went ahead and purchased Star Ocean Second Story just to get the bitter taste of this game out of my mouth
I have played both Lost Sphear and I am Satsuna and both I feel had more world building than this game. The characters come in and then are gone to fast to be invested in them in this game. The story really does not get going until the second half ... its really slow build up. Unfortunately, overall I would not recommend this... THE GOOD: I liked the dark take on JRPG... good use of demon fighter transition system and fluid combat. THE BAD: The game needed more world building and framing, this is a common gripe I have with Tokyo RPG Factory. The characters come across as one dimensional, Japanese language with English subtitles. User interface is sometimes confusing, enemy assets are reused ALOT!.... never seen an RPG with so many reused enemy assets!. Environments are bland and not really interactive. Some of the female protagonists wear some ridiculous nightie gear :D THE UGLY: Your M0m!
Game gets a bad rap for what it isn't. Just plug in a controller and have a chill time. Definitely recommend the reincarnation mod (on github) if you prefer a challenge. Optimal party:
- Zephyr (lead) | Rest for party passives - Zaav - Izana - Lucika/Jex Zaav/Izana are core to enable infinite manifest duration. The other 2 slots are up to personal preference.

its been actual years since I've played this last but of what I can remember the plot kept steady paced for the most part but the ending felt kind of cop out-y and disappointed me. Beyond that there's no NG+ which I personally felt this game could have really benefited from even if its just as a novelty.
