About
It's been years since humanity enjoyed its last normal day. Everything lost its meaning, when a mysterious chemical compound leaked from one of the nearby laboratories on the edge of town. Today this event is known as, The Leak.
Chaos consumed the streets and crept into the lives of everyone. Over time, the people who had been exposed to chemicals for too long turned into monsters. Fast, ruthless creatures, driven only by instinct. Those who could, have long since fled. The lucky ones hid in bunkers, some built by themselves and others hidden deep in archival plans of the city. The unlucky ones are slowly dying, or worse.
The game puts you in the shoes of the survivor, whose job is to protect the other people who are still trying to lead a normal life in a bunker. A normal night watch turns deadly, when the only working generator malfunctions and turns off in random intervals for 60 seconds.
After just finishing Piotr Bunkowski's high school project from 2017 A trip to Yugolavia i wondered if he pursued a career in game development. His first effort was a succes in my eyes and i found out he and his colleague started developing a new FMV game called Purgatorium: A Family Torn Apart. Unfortunately it was cancelled, the reason was "creative differences". They did release a demo on itch.io. This is a little backstory so you might understand the game a bit better. Now onto the gameplay, it's pretty limited, movement is only horizontal and mouse clicks are for firing. A simple heal system, 2 guns? and a front kick to back off enemies is all that is at your disposal. The story makes the game and i'm happy he chose this topic. The good: + Great enemy and weapon design. + FMV mixed in between the levels to tell a story. + Behind the scenes is always nice to see in the extras. The not so good - Game is abit short - Gameplay could have been a bit more exciting. In the end i do recommend it.
This kind of reminded me of "Corpse Killer", but in a good way. Obviously a passion project with interesting vignettes of FMV in between a few chapters. I played on the steam deck, and for the most part, it worked. The kick required some work, but the game worked. Would love to see this reworked into something more as I think there is some real potential here. Kudos for getting this game out! The FMV Cutscenes are the real gem here, its the REAL story. The FPS shooter is merely a vehicle to tell the story of a jaded creator. Lots of fun. However, very short. You can complete in under an hour.
I don't want to spoil this game - I highly recommend going into this as cold as you can. Do not read anything and do not watch. It's a game with surprising depth that is about survival in multiple ways.
Interesting FMV game. There are not so many coming out these days. The beginning - just pass couple of levels - it's trolling, gameplay will change :) I wish the sound detection would've been better and the enemy collision...I have no idea if the enemy hitting me behind me or just moaning far away :\
Aaah, this one caught me by surprise! On paper, One Rotten Oath is a tank-controls FPS game where you fend off zombies (with funny variations) with the tools at hand in 60-second long segments. If you manage to survive you get some VN/FMV narration. Simple enough, right? That's what I was thinking till I played for a while and got slapped in the face. In reality... This game is a letter written on a personal level with gameplay in between. That's something I really enjoy in videogames, hence the strong recommendation. This is as far as I'll talk about in the review so I won't spoil your enjoyment. Also don't forget to check out the extras after finishing the game for some behind the scenes :)
Recommended by: Experiences Worth Experiencing
I truly felt immersed and invested in the story plot of this game! Not only was it a challenge for me to adapt as the levels progressed, but *SPOILER ALERT* I found it incredibly unique that if you pay attention to how the dev's story plot unfolded, you'll get a hint at what's to expect next. I hope I can see more of this project, or more like this one.
A really neat game! The style of it looks cool, the story is pretty interesting, the plot twist genuinely caught me off guard and had me guessing until the end and who doesn't love a secret ending? I think that this was a neat experience and would recommend it to others. I go more into detail and chat with the dev on my youtube channel so feel free to check it out at @acutekuma on youtube.
Great work by the dev on this. Tells a cool story with a unique concept.
