My Playtime: 2.4h (100% achievement, finished the game) Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): No. Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
Knights Retreat is a puzzle game that uses Chess piece movement. You need to move the Knights to reach the goal without moving to the same tile twice. Pros: - 80 levels - Simple, easy to understand levels Cons: - Unable to undo more than one move Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you enjoy a simple and short puzzle game to work out your brain a bit, buy this game.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
Knight's Retreat uses low-poly, 3D visuals. I found the lava in one of the biomes to be too bright for my eyes, although it's not to the point that it's distracting my gameplay. The UI is made simple and without many words, making it look neat and clean.
The Game
Gameplay Knight's Retreat is a puzzle game. If you know how to play Chess, you can play this game right away. However, the game doesn't tell you how to move the Chess pieces, so you need to look that up before playing if you don't know about it. A lot of Chess pieces will be scattered on the level, with limited tiles that you can step on. Your task is to move the colored Knights to the yellow-colored tile. However, there is a catch. If you move the colored Knights, the last tile that the Knight stepped on will be destroyed, and you won't be able to use it anymore. This gives more challenge once the pieces that you need to move increase, especially since you need to move the non-colored pieces around so that the colored Knights can reach their goal. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2464183873 The game does a good job of making the game bearable to play within one sitting. No levels are ever too big for me. The bigger levels are still up to the point where it's manageable—it's a medium size at best, and there aren't that many of these levels. Whenever the game provides a bigger level, it always follows up with a smaller level afterward to refresh your brain from the overwork. The game doesn't seem to overuse a lot of mechanics and tries to keep it simple by making each level unique. The game has 80 levels in total, with new mechanics added as you progress. There aren't many noteworthy mechanics—most of them are just simple switches, which is probably for the best to keep the game simple. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 2.4h. Most levels are easy to solve. Others might require you to work your brain a bit, but it never got to the point where it's too difficult for me.
Conclusion
Knight's Retreat is the perfect brain teaser game that you can finish in one sitting. It's only ~3h long, and while most levels are easy to solve, it'll force your brain to think a bit. I'd recommend buying it if you want to play a short puzzle game.
Knight's Retreat is a simple chess-themed puzzler which requires careful planning to complete its 80 stages. While the difficulty isn't consistent, it's easy enough to play in short sessions, ideal for break times or multiplayer queues. It's cheap, suitable for all ages, and awards achievements for completion.

Pros
✅ Easy to understand, with ample tutorial stages ✅ Pleasing low poly design, including different environments ✅ Chill music and SFX ✅ Multiple mechanics (sliding panels, flip switches, linked pieces)
Cons
❌ Undo only works for the very last move. On complex stages, this forces you to restart repeatedly ❌ Uneven difficulty with no stage select. Sometimes after solving a tricky stage, the next 5-10 are a breeze ❌ Stage select only works for completed puzzles. If you get stuck, you cannot skip ahead and return to solve the ones that gave you difficulty. This may require you to put down the game as a result, unnecessarily ❌ No visibility of available moves. This makes the game slightly less friendly to inexperienced players As the name suggests, Retreat is all about "escaping" with your knights to specified positions on oddly shaped playing fields. Each piece follows their standard movement rules, such as rooks to verticals and bishops to diagonals. The wrinkle here is that as your golden knights move, you can no longer reuse squares they touched, so forethought is a necessity in order to avoid being boxed in. As you progress, you'll be introduced to new mechanics that challenge you to experiment with how they work and play around them. The biggest critiques of the game are its stunted undo feature and that it forces you to solve every stage in sequence. It's one thing to be required to solve a puzzle that you can't unravel, but it's another when your path to the solution is needlessly prolonged by having to restart the stage with each mistake. There really isn't any reason the game couldn't allow you to fully undo every move, but here you'll find that you can only rewind one action. It's especially irritating when switches are introduced, as their effect is unique to each stage, and mandate trial and error to solve. The 80 stages will take you a couple hours to complete, or possibly less for the adept. It won't provide much value after clearing the final stage, however, since every level is preset. Whether you wait for sale or grab it at full price, it's quite affordable either way. Achievement Hunters: Each achievement is tied to a specific stage. Simply complete the game for 100%. At the time of this review, no guide exists, but would take less than an hour if one was made. Thank you Gelweo for the donation.
Knight's Retreat is a console (Switch, Xbox) ported "Chess" based puzzle game where you must move a Chess Knight over various puzzle levels to get to the target square. This isn't the worst puzzle game I've played but it feels like a mobile game. Low poly graphics were used to cut corners on the visual design, and of course to cater to the underpowered console appliances that this game was primarily designed for. Likewise, graphics tweaking options are not up to scratch for PC. This is a close one but there's just enough deficiencies in this to prevent me from recommending it, and Steam gives us no "Maybe" option.
7/10 tiny little puzzle game based around the movement of a horse/knight in chess.
Another minimalistic chess game from Minimol Games, bu--what's this? It's slightly less minimalisticalized. Is that a stream? A cactus? A campfire? The devil? Lava? OH MY GOOOOOO-- The Good:

Not so challenging that it's frustrating, but challenging enough to where it's gratifying to complete.
You can move the camera and zoom in/out.
It may be a retreat for knights, but there are other chess pieces in the game that you use.
Gimmicks: Different chess pieces, multiple knights/goals, 1-use squares, switches, tandem pieces.
While some of the environments are a bit derivative, each set of levels has its own.
The environments create a comfy atmosphere for the game...until you get to Hell.
Relaxing ambient music.
The Neutral:

80 levels.
Sometimes it's a bit difficult to tell what a piece is.
Some of the later levels are more on the easy side; especially when introducing new gimmicks.
The Bad:

The level select. Some levels are sort of obscured and you can't move the map around to see, only tilt it up and down.
Pro Tips:

If a space is 2-sided, keeping a piece on one side while preventing from dissolving when you put a piece on the other.
Knight's Retreat is both different and familiar at the same time. Minimol is known for their chess-based puzzle games and minimalistic approach. There are some elements here that are reminiscent of both Unlock the King and Knight Swap, but it still manages to do its own thing. Worth it.
This game poses little to no challenge. The stages are very boring an non-intuitive. I got this game in a bundle but i still regret doing so. I like the design and i find the low-poly models aesthetically pleasing, but the gameplay is lacking so i can't recommend it.
Unable to progress due to bugs. Which is a shame, because Minimol can make a decent chess-inspired game!
YES! it was great and nicely done. i would enjoy part2 if there will be one.
판수 늘리기 위한 난이도 없고 무의미한 판이 너무 많음. 그런데 건너뛸수 없고 모든 판을 순서대로 깨야함. 재미없는 시간낭비.
