Reviews
Disclaimers: - This is a solo dev game and I do take it into account this time. My review is adjusted to the lower price as well. - I have mainly only enjoyed this in solo play while the game is mainly meant for co-op - I have not played similar VR games like Dungeons of Eternity. Is this a VR game or a game in VR It's a game in VR. Unfortunately it's developed with very flat thinking, you can't interact with just everything and while there are several VR mechanics for fighting, many actions (e.g. inserting a key in a lock) perform automatically with no utilization of 6DoF Who is this game for? For dungeon crawler enjoyers and those who just want to throw some magic and swing some swords with your bro. It's not a complex game, but quite enjoyable till you run out of content. There is nothing that bars any age above 12, but it's probably best for young adults, more vintage gamers may want to look in other places first. The good The game can be enjoyed both, in solo and in multiplayer. Server issues proved that multiplayer might be offline but game runs perfectly fine in offline mode too. It's fairly easy to understand and get into. I find the gameplay loop very fun, especially with the variety of enemies. The AI is not the smartest or diverse, but enemy weapons and abilities create enough engagement. Combat is physics based. Not the best ever I think but that is very subjective and VR players always fight over this, what they prefer. Don't hang me if you don't like the combat. It's PvE only. You can build your own classes by mixing/focusing armor and weapons, like mage, warrior, paladin, archer etc. No healer tho. Each delve can be as short as few minutes or as long as couple dozen. Do it at your own pace, no pressure. There is only very basic tutorial at the beginning. You can communicate with people for tips and further explanations. There is some interesting problem-solving that creates quality of life things. e.g. the shield you use can be broken but regenerates, armor has no armor values just adds to your health, making it easy to understand what gear is better or worse. This lets you concentrate on the more fun things. You can play seated, thou there is no official seated mode - just calibrate your height while seated and you are good to go. I playtested the game before the launch and the dev seems trustworthy to not just abandon this game after launch. It's still just 1 dev so progress might be slow tho. The magic system is very simple (just hold trigger and move your hand) but fairly satisfying to use. No dialogues, no monologues, no text. If you solo - just put on some music or podcast or whatever in background and have fun. Party is 1-3 people. No need to look for random 4th. The dealbreakers Very few settings for comfort. Essentially none. You can calibrate your height, switch between snap and smooth, that's it. No running. No jumping. Few settings for graphics. It's clear this has been developed as standalone first game. This also results in draw distance on PC being very small and stuff like annoying popping and effects rendered from something behind several walls. It's PvE only. There are a lot of items around you that look like something important and they respond to physics, but you just can't pick them up because you can't interact with anything you are not meant to use. This is very disappointing or even perplexing at first. Enemies only spawn in once you reach a certain point inside the room. This will mean that you can't scout ahead and enemies will constantly spawn in from your blindspot as well. There is only very basic tutorial at the beginning. You are encouraged to talk with people (ewww) for tips and explanations. Balance between different weapons is fairly poor, making one class clear meta. Balance changes may occur but I think it will be difficult to balance them properly. At the time of me writing this, two-handed weapons and bows are completely useless, don't plan on playing those classes tho they exist. There is some interesting problem-solving that creates quality of life things. e.g. the shield you use can be broken but regenerates, armor has no armor values just adds to your health, making it easy to calculate. If you enjoy crunching numbers and minmaxing every aspect of your game, you are not getting it here. RNG drops can make this a bit grindy if you are down on your luck. Content is fairly limited. Very little magic variety. Levels are procedurally generated, which helps, but they become repetitive quite fast still. Very little variety between the enemies. Party is 1-3 people. Your fourth squad member won't get the discord call again. No in-game friends system. You will have to coordinate your lobby numbers through other means. No lore. Is the price right? I think it's perfect fit, a bargain even with the launch discount (early access 12 eurodollars). You are easily getting at least 10 hours of gameplay out of this. If the dealbreakers don't scare you, buy it, support the VR devs!
Before making a bad review about the game saying it looks under developed, understand that not only is this game early access, it's also being developed by one person. Please be patient and don't be hating for the smallest things. The game is really good if you're into difficult and physics based combat. Beating the dungeon bosses are very rewarding whether it being spells or gear. I've playtested this game last month and the game has improved quite a lot since. Really looking forward to seeing a lot of newer and more difficult content. I have a lot of hope that this game will grow into something much bigger.
This is a Quest game slightly enhanced for PCVR, but low-poly models and extremely low-res textures are everywhere and stick out like a sore thumb. Physics are very bad too, often my sword would go undetected through an opponent. Water and lighting effects look nice, but coming from real PCVR like EXD, I'd say EXD really is like a full 100 times better (not 10 or 50 times, but a full 100) - unless you're just out to whack some opponents with an IQ of about 20. Gameplay feels much like a game from 20 years ago. Maybe not a good thing I played EXD just before starting this game - then again, I observed that in EXD I get similar performance as in this game, but One More Delve has such incredibly poor graphics that the game - and I know this is early access - seems very unoptimized. There are some graphics settings, which are great to have. Overall this feels like pimped up phoneVR. If you want to play with swords and some magic, go for real VR like Blade & Sorcery, EXD, Undead Citadel or even Skydance's Behemoth - these games are so far beyond One More Delve that there simply is no comparison. I've asked for a refund, I will not be coming back.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/_0zaxo5Um4w This is a solid VR dungeon crawler. It's missing some QoL features, but for a game released in Early Access, it's off to a solid start. It runs well. I didn't experience any serious issues or bugs. However, there are some negatives. Biggest one is that the tutorial is utterly lacking. It's basically sign posts with very basic information. Not a good first impression for the game. There are some negative reviews about the melee swings not registering ... I don't think that's the case. I believe, and I may be wrong here, that there is a melee swing cooldown. You can only swing so fast. If you try to swing faster, your hit won't register. I think that's an intentional dev decision to balance weapons. I believe you cannot parry and I think that's a bigger issue than hit detection. Blocking with shield is also not intuitive. There are other issues as well. I did not like the bow & arrow. Handling didn't feel good & the physics here seemed off, plus the proportions seemed off. It's kind of sad that In Death released many years ago on PCVR and we've only gotten worse archery mechanics since then instead of improvement. Magic doesn't seem viable early on because you don't have enough mana. It's more of a way to bring down the HP of a big enemy, then you finish them off with melee. I had a successful run on my second attempt. It was a 2 handed axe and I just zerged everything. Not much strategy involved. I would like to see better level design. More enemy variety. I played solo though. I would imagine playing online co-op with 2 friends would be more fun. Overall, this game is off to an okay start in Early Access. For the budget price, I definitely think you could do worse. I still think games like Ancient Dungeon, Dungeons of Eternity, etc. are in a higher tier as far as dungeon crawler. I'm not even counting games like Grim Lord or Legendary Tales because I'm classifying them as Souls-like. Grim Lord easily clears all of them though IMO. Can this game catch up? I don't know. I guess we shall see. Rate 6/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. The game feels really good. My only issue is the visual quality of the game. First thing I noticed when I first launched the game was that so many objects and things like your arms, hands, are so low quality. Maybe it's for optimization, but for a pcvr game, low polys should never be an issue. I am looking forward into seeing where this game goes.
Im having fun with this so far, and for 11 dollars its a easy buy. game looks great, plays fine just a few minor hiccups and the Dev is working on fixing things quickly. Pick it up now while its in EA, and lower price and have fun along the way
Great start for a good VR game, it is still early access at this time and you can feel it, but i'm sure if the developers stay dedicated to this project it and flesh it out more it could become great, something in the mix of No rest for the Wicked meets legendary tales VR.
Great game! The physics-based mechanics are incredibly fun and the combat feels very good. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy VR dungeon crawlers!
