One in One Million is a kinetic, dialogue-driven thriller visual novel that immediately hooks you with its harrowing premise. Four friends wake up trapped in a room with surveillance cameras and a panel containing a red button and a screen that reads “1 in 1,048,576 – Pot: 1.” They are forced to play a macabre game of chance: press the button and the money pot doubles, but so does the probability of receiving a lethal electric shock, which is shown by the other number on the panel. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3683161235 At first, the risk seems almost impossible, but the numbers escalate quickly. What begins as a distant threat soon turns into a terrifying gamble where every press feels heavier than the last. The simple mechanic drives the tension forward, and the question of whether to keep playing slowly starts dividing the group. What really gives the story its strength, however, is how the game uses this mechanic to peel back the characters themselves. After each button press, a mischievous raccoon reveals a “Truth,” exposing secrets, lies, and unresolved guilt that the group has buried since high school. As more truths come to light, the four characters start seeing the prize money only as a distraction. The real stakes become the friendships, the past they tried to forget, and the masks they have been hiding behind. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3683160989 The writing remains compelling throughout the game. Conversations flow naturally, shifting between heated arguments and emotional confrontations, with some occasional dark humor inserted into the mix. The pacing works particularly well: each revelation arrives at the right moment, making it hard to stop reading before “the next button press.” The story takes around 5–7 hours to finish and keeps the tension steady throughout. The only disappointment for me was the ending, which turned out to be quite underwhelming, despite explaining the reasoning behind the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3683161088 There are no voice-overs, but the hand-drawn 2D art captures the characters’ emotions well enough and gives them personality, while the soundtrack reinforces the uneasy atmosphere without overpowering the dialogue scenes. And yes… the raccoon somehow manages to be both funny and unsettling at the same time. Be warned that the story tackles sensitive themes, including transphobia and suicide, which may make it an uncomfortable read for some players.
A death survival game has never been more eye-opening. :o

Introduction
One in One Million is a kinetic (mostly) visual novel developed and published by Anxiety Comet. You're Lucia, a university student who wakes up in a trapped room along with three of her best friends from high school: Armando, Quim, and Valentina. After the four of them try to figure out what's going on (beyond being trapped, that is), they're greeted by a raccoon plushie named Pami, who appears on a monitor. She explains that they're participants in a game (and insists that they weren't kidnapped lol) and they can win up to over 1 million euros if they stick it through to the end (but they can supposedly quit the game at any time). All they have to do is push the red button and above that button, there's a screen that shows odds and a monetary amount (which is the prize). The prize starts off small but increases upon passing each round. Of course, there is a catch. There is a chance that whoever presses the red button will be electrocuted, and that chance increases with each round. Also, Pami will reveal a "Truth" in regards to the situation that they're in. As the friends agree to play the game (although one is very vehement against it), their skeletons in the closet may get discovered... As this is a linear story, you play the game from beginning to end. Now, there is one choice at a point in the game (basically, asking whether you prefer to play VNs with choices or no choices), but your choice won't matter. It'll simply change the flavor text for Pami, who breaks the fourth wall and asks you, the reader, that question. There are a few CGs shown and a varied soundtrack although no voice acting. Steam achievements are available, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "profile features limited".
Review
I remember how much this visual novel caught my attention, especially after reading a friend's review of it, so I reached out to the developer and was given a review key. All I'll say is that even though it took me a while to get around to this, I'm happy that I finally did. ^^
Story and Gameplay
As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, the story starts off with Lucia waking up in a locked room along with her friends. Although it isn't the most original concept, the story ends up having lots of surprises and revelations. Now, you'd think that the money would be a driving factor even though I agree with one of the participants that it's more important to focus on escaping than winning money. Even though the participants seem innocent on the surface, their skeletons get revealed with each round after a Truth is made known. For example, there's a reason that one of the participants is adamant about the prize money, which involves his family's financial situation. Also, some sensitive topics are touched upon, like infidelity and whatnot. As I got to learn what each participant is really like, I just felt less sympathy for them. Especially, when very late in the story, it's revealed who put these friends in that situation and their motivation, I couldn't help but feel disgusted with them. Any remaining sympathy I had for them was tossed out the window. Some might argue that they couldn't have foreseen the consequences of their actions, and yes, I'd generally agree with that sentiment, but
when someone doesn't feel any sort of remorse, I can't help but think that they are horrible
. As for the characters, well, it's probably obvious how I feel about them, but with Lucia, she was ok until she starts
spouting off about God and judgment, and I don't like when someone forces their beliefs on others like that, despite that her stance does get explained when the mastermind and their reasons are revealed
. The writing is pretty solid, and as I played the English translation, I didn't notice any typos. The pacing is good, and although some might disagree with me on this part, I really liked that ending. Even though I know that there is a person behind Pami, Pami is absolutely a riot, especially when she breaks the fourth wall. I guess it's obvious that she's my favorite character. XD With achievements, I had no problems unlocking all of them. As I tend to read on the slower side, it took me around 4 hours to complete the story, but gameplay time will vary, depending on the reader.
Art and Music
The art is beautiful. I love the hand-drawn style that the artist put into the sprites and CGs. The backgrounds are on the simple side, but considering that the game takes place in a locked room, it's understandable. I wish that a CG gallery was present, so that I can look at the CGs whenever I want, but since there are a few CGs, I can justify not having it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3759542127 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3759542351 With the music, the tracks have a nice variety. While the track for when Pami reveals a Truth has a funny upbeat vibe, the track for whoever pushes the red button has this dramatic, suspenseful one. With that track, it keeps you on your toes, being on the heels of your feet, not knowing whether the one who pushes the red button will end up getting dying from electrocution. The sound effects help to add to that effect. Even though no voice acting is present, it really doesn't need it, as the characters' facial expressions reveal their emotions.
Conclusion
Would I recommend One in One Million? If you're looking for a visual novel that isn't afraid of revealing people's skeletons and sending a very important message along the way, you like stories about being in trapped rooms, and/or you like getting easily obtainable Steam achievements, then it's definitely worth checking out. I like the message that the story conveys, and many people could benefit from it. As for whether it's worth the asking price, it is slightly on the shorter side. Personally, I think it's worth it, especially because it is the developer's first game, but you can wait for a sale. Finally, I'd like to thank Anxiety Comet for the review key. The story and its message really resonated with me, and as Pami said, I went ahead and wrote up a positive review. I'd love for more future VNs that revolve around Pami and revealing others' skeletons and dark secrets.
A short visual novel about four "friends" trapped in a death game. I enjoyed it. The humor might not be for everyone taste but it got a chuckle out of me. Story has some good bits and some hiccups but satisfying to read. Valentina did mostly nothing wrong.
I am leaving a positive review because this was fun. I can't spoil anything and since it's about $10 for two hours if you read fast I can't even begin to do a rating. I'm glad it was translated a lot of cursing and stuff wasn't really necessary. The ending was good not really a Danganronpa game or something if that's what you are expecting. I don't agree with the ending....or the premise but I liked this game a lot and now that games on Steam are not being finished and are sold at high prices with a fraction of the game being playable I can appreciate the whole product. There might be a sequel to this. The characters are crazy.......but the ending really takes the cake lol.....they said 7 hours on autoplay but I clicked continuously and finished in 2 hours....I even took a break because the emotions are really high in this game like super tense.....it's a solvable mystery....I think the Mansion of Gluttony is sort of like this like kinetic and similar sort of games. Raging Loop is similar to this. I wish it didn't have all the swearing and stuff I didn't think it needed it but I guess it's supposed to be funny. It has a good message and everything though. Yeah it was good a little racy and crude but I guess that's what kept to being even 10 minutes and man this game was good....if it wasn't for the achievements I wouldn't have played till the end though. Yeah but at least it's finished. Although I recommend Pink Noise for a great game that will be finished eventually if people show support so I'm supporting them cuz it was fun but only 71 minutes without going back with no skip key. This was funny that's true. It also gives you fuzzy feelings. But anyway it goes without saying I wish it was at least triple the length.
