Art: decent to pretty good, with the exception of some small perspective problems. Music: just okay, kinda creepy sometimes and kinda out of place in some 'dramatic' scenes. Voice acting: most of it is good, except for the security guard whose lines were recorded inside a dumpster with a 2 dollar mic and every choice made for the most annoying character (Junpei) and the second most annoying character (Shinya). Writing: HORRIBLE. TERRIBLE. AWFUL. Feels like it was written by a 15 year old who watches too many mediocre horror anime. Plot holes, logical inconsistencies (does the police and security cameras exist in this world?), too many conveniences for the plot, poor understanding of japanese culture (plus the annoying moments where characters describe what an 'onigiri' is and sh*t like that) and very poor treatment of mental health subjects. Also, so much focus on mental health but for some reason the most annoying character (and antagonist?) is the only fat guy? Sure. This VN is almost so bad it's good but it gets really dull and it really drags at the end.
It gets good
The urban legend says that you can leave a request for the Corpse Girl to remove someone you hate, attaching only their photo and their phone number; they will receive a picture of their own corpse just before death. Well... honestly, the legend hasn't been getting much traction, and the site gets like 3 unique weekly visits, but it's worth a try, right? Even if they don't die, they'll surely get spooked enough to give you some satisfaction. It's all fun and games until you receive your own photo. From now on, we're venturing into MILD spoiler territory, because it would've been impossible to talk much about this game past the prologue; consider yourself warned. So, yeah. The first act is pretty bombastic. We don't need to solve neither the mystery of who is the Corpse Girl nor how she does her magic; we are her, Noriko Kurosawa, an anorexic shut-it with a narcissistic streak, mad photoshop skills, and a whole load of burner phones. She doesn't believe she has the power to outright kill anyone, not really. It's mostly done for laughs. For the illusion of power. But what happens when you cross out the 'illusion' part? What happens when people do actually start dying like flies after getting their masterfully doctored pics? What if it excites you enough to ramp it up and start delivering not just photos, but the victims' corpses right to their doorstep?
And then it gets weird
A lot of people seem to be surprised that Corpse Factory isn't, and never was, a Japanese game. Yes, it's an OELVN, but its mimicry levels are out of this world. Like, let's be honest, we could've expected something like this from our Asian suppliers. It's not quite Wonderful Everyday levels of messed up, but it gets unnervingly close sometimes — until everything crumbles. Maybe it is cultural, after all. The novel strives to be Asian-levels messed up while staying Western-levels grounded. Noriko takes great care to use her neighbour's wi-fi when administrating the site and relying on burner phones AND an app to substitute numbers when sending out the photos... but somehow, not a single camera in Tokyo catches them driving around in a very conspicuous van delivering corpses. Somehow, even when the police gets involved, they cannot trace the perpetrators back to one single morgue they're getting the bodies from. Somehow, the titular FACTORY where the corpses are being stored doesn't get discovered in months. Actually, not ever. By the third act, hundreds of people keep dying daily, the total body count reaching tens of thousands. The clock is ticking, and if we're waiting for the mysteries to be explained, we only have one out of three main endings, a bonus scene, and an epilogue. Well, what answers do we get?
And then you can't remember why you started
Honestly, a handful. It gets explained why Noriko sometimes talked about the Corpse Girl like she was a separate entity. Noriko's overall personality starts making more sense as a whole, as does her sister's. We get explicitly told twice (ugh) why the word 'red' is colored green when appearing in writing, and vice versa. Hmm... Yeah, that's it. That's all. The game feels criminally unfinished, because after exhausting every snippet of available content we get left with nothing. Apparently, Noriko
survives being stabbed just fine and gets a convenient personality reset,
and apparently, Kojiro
also survives a literal fire, is Nobel Sinclair in the flesh, and the new and uprising mastermind behind the Human Removal Service, still uncaught as per the last line of the VN,
and the endings themselves evoke a single reaction of: "Yes, and..?" And nothing. In the end, I think that's what made me leave a negative review. The art was good, the music was also surprisingly decent (the menu theme, the Dies Irae and their renditions, mmm, chef's kiss), and I loved the way the menu itself changed as you kept unraveling more of the plot. The voice acting can be a hit or miss, but I suppose English dub lovers would appreciate the familiar voices. But. But it's all about the story, isn't it? And the story was just meh. Too many threads left hanging, too many instances of 'unreliable narrators' turning into outright obtuse liars for the sake of a 'gotcha!' moment, too many characters who actually served no narrative purpose. Noriko just killed a bunch of people
actually, not really, lol
and then got better. My disappointment is immeasurable, but my day is okay.
Corpse Factory has a cool, dark concept, but the writing really drags it down. The dialogue feels stiff and awkward, and it’s hard to take the horror seriously. A lot of the emotional moments don’t hit because the buildup just isn’t there. The pacing can feel slow with long chunks of exposition. It’s not terrible, but it definitely needed tighter writing.
this game is so good i was hard the whole time playing it--the only thing that turned me off was the mild word salad i had to ingest. otherwise very enjoyable!
Finally got around to playing the gift that I got for Secret Santa!! The whole concept is already pretty macabre, but what really makes it work is how grounded it feels. It’s less about shock and more about watching people slowly lose themselves, like you’re seeing their sanity slip bit by bit until there’s almost nothing left. That quiet descent is what makes it so unsettling. I’ll be honest, I did guess quite a few of the plot twists early on. The story gives you enough hints that you can piece things together without too much trouble. But it didn’t really bother me. If anything, it made everything feel more inevitable, like you could see where it was heading and still had to sit through it playing out. Visually, it’s really beautiful. The art style is soft and almost delicate, which contrasts nicely with how dark the story gets. That contrast makes certain moments hit harder than they probably would have otherwise. The voice acting was also really solid. Tomoe stood out the most for me, there’s something really engaging about her performance, and her character arc was genuinely one of my favourite parts of the game. Watching her develop was both fun and a bit unsettling in a way that fits the tone perfectly. Honestly i just really love that diva, and the VA for her was PERFECT at embodying her lines, she was so fun. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot. It’s one of those games that isn’t just trying to scare you. Even if you can see parts of it coming, it still leaves an impression.
I bought Corpse Factory because I like VNs even if there aren't many choices (this game has 3 total) and it seemed to have a unique concept but it's just so all over the place. It feels like someone had a good idea but not enough time to properly conceptualize it before putting it into writing. So I read the whole story including all endings and it leaves me with one question: Why? I feel like there's just so many things unexplained but at the same time it's not open enough for a sequel. First and foremost, I have to give credit to the art, music and voice acting, those aspects were pretty good. So now onto what bothered me. At the beginning it feels like the story tries to justify a bunch of things to make it seem more realistic and then near the end it seemingly just gives up doing that and leans supernatural(?). The way the characters and their emotions are written is hard to understand and get into. I get that they are not made to be relatable, but they also seemed to change their minds a lot, so it's a bit hard to get a good grasp of their personalities. The "plot twists" are either not really a twist e.g.
Aoi being the one that requested to kill Noriko
or come out of nowhere with no further info e.g.
Kojiro being the boss of the Human Removal Service
. Maybe I'm thinking too one-dimensional, this is just my take on it. If anyone has an explanation for the previously mentioned spoiler, feel free to educate me.
This game is very unrealistic and stupid. The cops in Japan must have accidentally flipped their IQ criterion upside down. The quiet kid became a game developer – good job little bud.
