My playtime: 5.6h (based on steam, 100% achievement) Grindy Achievement(s): Yes (~2 achievements that might take ~2h to finish). Optional Achievement(s): No. Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
On A Roll 3D is a platformer game where you have to dodge obstacles and kill enemies to reach the goal. The game has 24 levels including 6 boss fights every 3 levels. Pros: - 24 levels - 4 unique boss fights - Challenges for hardcore gamers to finish the levels with a perfect score or the game in one attempt - Adjustable parameters Cons: - Enemies look similar to each other - Some areas are too bright if you play in the lowest setting
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you like to play short and easy platformer game, buy this on discount. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In-Depth Review

Graphics
Despite being released in 2015, On A Roll 3D has a style that is similar to PS1 games on a higher resolution. Textures look simple and rough around the edges while some objects blend with the background at first glance, giving an additional challenge to finish the levels without getting hit. However, the background and platform in some areas look similar if you play the game in the lowest setting, especially the snowy area where the screen can be too bright at some point. The game also has a clear and simple menu design. You can do a lot of things in it, including resetting a level, losing a life, and returning to the main menu screen - it's very practical to both casual players and speedrunners.
The game
Levels The game has 24 levels that are spread across 6 areas, with 3 normal levels and 1 boss fight in each area. Each area has a different theme and the game will become more difficult as you progress. Hints, which can be toggled on and off in the options, will provide you with a basic tutorial from walking to introducing a new obstacle. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2242112056 The gameplay is similar to Sonic games with slower speed where you have to avoid or kill enemies and obstacles while collecting rings, which are depicted as stars in this game, to the finish line. You won't be coughing out stars if you get hit though. Obstacles are different in each area although they work the same way - you can't touch them. There are also switches that you can use to open some doors and you might need to travel back and forth to access the switch that you need to advance. Although most obstacles are easy, the last obstacle, the "upside-down powerup", makes the game to be harder than it should be. Luckily, it is only available in the last two levels and you can always redo the level from the beginning if you run out of lives. Your score will be calculated after you finish the levels. Some bonuses will also be applied if you meet certain criteria. The game will mark the level as "perfect" by giving it a yellow star instead of a red star that is used for completed stages if you fulfill all of the criteria. Score and lives will be carried over to the next level and will be saved in the leaderboard after you finish the last level. You don't have to worry if you don't care about it though, you still can start the game from the beginning of each level if you want. Lives You'll get 5 lives, which can be tweaked in the options, at the beginning of the level and you'll have to restart from either the beginning of the game or the latest checkpoint if you get hit. An exception is to be made if you have some stars at your disposal, which will be reduced by 10 every time you take a hit. Stars can be collected as you progress and will be respawned if you lost a life. Enemies Enemies are depicted with another ball character with a different color. They have different attack variations and patterns, although they look too small and similar to each other to notice the difference. Defeating them is as simple as jumping at the top of them and the game is also forgiving enough since you sometimes can kill them just by touching its sides. Boss fights are available at the last level of each area. Boss fight levels are usually shorter and easier than normal levels with a checkpoint, 10 stars, and a boss fight at the end of the level. Bosses are usually just a bigger ball with unique attack patterns. Some bosses have similar attack patterns as other smaller enemies, some have more variations like spikes that will come in and out of their body at a certain interval. Although it might be challenging to defeat them on your first try, these bosses are quite easy once you know their attack pattern. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2242114961 Length The in-game timer records me finishing the game at 2:58:07. Steam records me finishing it at 3.8h. The rest of my playtime was used in finishing the grindy achievement and another achievement where you have to defeat the last boss without getting hit; it's a challenging achievement that needs a few retries to obtain. Problems The game runs smoothly until I experienced an FPS drop in the third area. I ended up turning off the reflections and shadows in the settings and there are no other issues afterward except the fact that the game looks a bit bland without those features on, especially the watery area outside the platform.
Specs
Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz, 4GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000
Conclusion
It's a solid platformer game with 24 levels and 4 boss fights. The game might not look that promising with the rough-looking graphics, but it's actually an enjoyable game with relaxing music and easy levels. On a Roll 3D is actually a 2.5d platformer where the ball only moves horizontally, on a 2d plane; it's the levels that are 3d and often rotate around. This is not anything like Marble Madness or Super Monkey Ball. It's closer to a 2d Sonic game with much less speed, much fewer enemies and more puzzles. The game runs and controls well. Graphics are good. Pleasant music. Interesting course designs. Good variety of obstacles. There are enemies and bosses but they are few and secondary. Always balls of different colors, sometimes with spikes. The bosses in particular are lame, just being bigger versions of smaller enemies. The challenge comes in navigating the terrain. It's far from a precision platformer, though, and the difficulty is somewhat low with plenty of checkpoints. What I found the toughest was when left and right were reversed in the last levels. I could have done without that.
Another cr4ppy platformer. Solution - play something better.
Man spielt einen 1€ Ball vom Tedi.
Fun enough to kill time. Two of its achievements are grindy though unfortunately. Also skip the 2D DLC, it's not nearly as fun in my opinion.
