About
You're the Stranger, a mysterious bounty hunter on a mission to bag the ultimate prize. And you need that money like no one else because there is something very wrong with your health and the only way to fix it is a very costly operation. However the nature of your illness remains a secret and as you find out during the game, for a good reason.
In the dusty, undeveloped wastelands of Western Mudos, cantankerous townsfolk find their settlements besieged by belligerent outlaws. Along comes Stranger, a tall, dark and enigmatic bounty hunter with a mission to capture troublemakers and scoundrels and return them to civilized townships for incarceration.
But Stranger is keeping a secret and needs expensive surgery to survive. In his quest to earn enough Moolah, Stranger reluctantly accepts the ultimate bounty from the owner of the Mongo River and suddenly his adventure takes a very different turn.
Fire Live Ammo! Launch critters at your enemies. Distract them with Chippunks, encase them in Bolamite webbing, or destroy them with Stingbees and explosive bats.
Accept missions from the Bounty Store and talk to neurotic townsfolk to learn where your bounty can be found.

The main part of the game is a very entertaining comedic action experience. The ending part is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ horrendous travesty. It is incredible how bad one can ♥♥♥♥ up a game in the last 2 hours
FPS set in Oddworld universe. Play as gunslinger alien who have some unfinished business to finish. Collect various small creatures and use them as ammo! Sadly, game almost no relation to Abe's Odyssey. I had some fun playing this one long ago. Recommendation stamp.
Gameplay and controls aged like milk Needs a modern reboot
Yet another diabolical PC port of a console game to prove yet again that consoles are and always will be superior to PC. I'm off to boot up my original Xbox and play this game the way it is meant to be played.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD looks great, but it's a horrible port! Why port a console game and not have controller support?!? It's just flat out stupid! Have it say "This game is not designed for controllers" is also stupid. This makes me never want to buy another older game ported to PC. NOT recommended
Verdict
✅ Recommended, but mostly for nostalgic players An okay Oddworld spin-off that I respect more than I personally want to keep playing.
My history with the game
I played Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD on Steam for 33 minutes. I did not play this game back when it originally released, so I do not have nostalgia for it. I mainly tried it because I wanted to explore more games from the Oddworld series. After trying it, I can say it is okay, but it is not something that grabbed me enough to continue.
Quick signals
💸 Value: ✅ Worth trying on sale 🖥️ Requirements: ✅ Easy to run 🎨 Graphics: ⚠️ Old, but acceptable in HD ⏱️ Length: ➖ I stopped after 33 minutes 📖 Story: ➖ Did not hook me quickly 🎮 Difficulty: ✅ Simple to understand 🐛 Bugs: ⚠️ Launcher issue with anti-aliasing
Technical note
The game did not launch for me when anti-aliasing was enabled in the setup launcher. If the game does not start, try turning anti-aliasing off. I also set the maximum FPS to 60, but in-game my monitor still showed 144 FPS.
What I liked
* It is an interesting and different take on the Oddworld universe. * The idea of mixing first-person and third-person gameplay is unique. * The HD version makes the game look playable enough today. * I can understand why nostalgic players or older fans may still enjoy it. * It is not a bad game, just not really for me.
What didn’t work for me
* The game did not hook me during my short playtime. * I cannot imagine myself finishing it. * Without nostalgia, it feels more like an okayish older game than something I personally need to continue. * The launcher issue with anti-aliasing is annoying. * The FPS setting also did not seem to work properly for me.
Is it an endless game? How long to beat?
No, this is not an endless game. I personally stopped after 33 minutes, so I cannot fairly judge the full length. This review is based only on my short Steam experience.
Who will love it
You may enjoy Stranger's Wrath HD if you played it back in the day, have nostalgia for it, or like older action-adventure games with unusual mechanics. It may also be worth trying if you are a big Oddworld fan and want to experience something different from the main Abe games.
Replay value
For me, replay value is very low. I tried it, I respect it, but I do not feel any motivation to continue or replay it.
Final note
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD is an okay game, and I can recommend it to the right audience. For nostalgic players, it may still be a fun return. For me personally, without nostalgia, it did not grab me enough to keep playing. Recommended, but mainly for fans and nostalgic players.
I played this game all the time as a kid, and have just revisited it now in 2026 and it still holds up as a fun, unique and very different type of game than you would see today. The story is awesome, you play as a bounty hunter trying to get enough moolah to pay his medical bills and get to meet many colourful characters on your journey. You use your crossbow, and a unique set of live ammo to help take out the enemies. Without spoiling it, the game does have more than you'd probably expect from just reading the store page and I would highly suggest just jumping into the game and bagging some bounties. It being made in 2005, it's of course got some rough edges, (graphics, controls, subtitles out of synch/not matching spoken) but I assure you, the story is worth a little downtime to figure out the controls (the 3rd person sprinting in the game is honestly so fun, once you get it down). It might be childhood bias giving me rose-tinted glasses, but even so, I highly recommend this game, and I think it deserves way more love than its ever got. So get to hunting some outlaws Stranger. There's moolah to be had.
Works perfect on steam deck. Runs perfect on steam deck. One of the most memorable games from my early teens.
This game suffers from many QoL issues ( no way to change difficulty without restarting the game ) ( even more egregious, there's no way to even see what difficulty you are on, or what difficulty each save file is which is just like ??? ) ( no autosave after encounters, you must manually save or risk losing your progress, like it's 2005 again ) ( touching the touch screen on steamdeck makes the camera go haywire and requires a relaunch to fix ) and honestly it's just not a good port. I'm a big fan of the Oddworld series (more the promise of it than the fulfillment of such), and I think the environmental moral of the story is as significant today as ever. Still, I would classify this game as "barely playable" and "barely worth playing" as well. The only people I could really recommend this game to are those who are playing it for purely nostalgic purposes. I will now restart the game and finish it one time on easy so I can finally put Stranger behind me.
