I originally played this many moons ago (10 yrs?) way back when it was an app on an iPod. Back then, when it first came out, it was only ever one episode. Slowly over that time it has grown into 3 small episodes and been ported to PC. The developer is really Piotr Krol (Polish I believe?) and believe me when I say this, this is his greatest showcase out of all his current products. A few moan about the controls not being super responsive at times and that the voice acting seems somewhat out of place, but these gripes seem really in consequential and easy to excuse when you admire the heavily inspired limbo world he has created and the magical score and sound effects that enrich the environment to life. Also believe me, the controls are much worse on the mobile version, plus on the mobile version you get constant advertisements that like to pop up as soon as you try and make a jump. Story is a little girl who crash lands on an extremely hostile alien world where everything wants to kill you. Living in Australia I can relate to this as everything wants to kill us here too. Like the game we too have giant spiders that are poisonous and about the size of a large dog. Also like the game, if you go out to centre of the outback, you would probably come across some primitive Neanderthals whose only language is throwing rocks at you. As for the swamp filled with frogs it was very reminiscent of the top end of Queensland during flood season. Cane toads everywhere on the roads that make a popping sound under tyres like bubble wrap which can be quite addictive. Here I am thinking she has landed on an alien world. Struth never did I realise she's probably in my backyard. Loneliness definitely gets to you out here in the 'never, never', while she made a short connection with an opossum/cat looking creature and constantly writes in her journal, it’s just not the same as having a deep and meaningful with a bottle of beer and saying amen to a porcelain bowl. Not that she's probably old enough to drink, on the other hand it would perfectly explain her parking skills. Pffft women drivers (roll eyes) ... Game abruptly ends with the girl closing her eyes while resting against a tree, probably her final thought being that there are good squish noises (spiders) and there are bad squish noises (you). In any case, Australia has trees that kill people too. Undoubtedly Piotr Krol is warning everyone, 'Visit Australia if you plan to die on an odd planet'... https://youtu.be/vf4XXMw6P5E If you enjoyed reading this review feel free to subscribe to my curator page.
OddPlanet
Can't recommend when there are many more and better sidescrolling adventures out there. The game does a very poor job of signposting anything to the player. What can be interacted with, will this enemy see me if I just stay still or do I need to be hidden, when can a carried item be used or not, etc. And for a game that overrelies on you trying to sneak by the same spider creatures over and over, not communicating what will cause you to be caught and what won't, and not keeping that consistent, is the absolute opposite of fun. There was once I had to consult the walkthrough as it looked just like the game had bugged out but actually I had just not completed the next step in the puzzle (
The snail would not move when I pushed him, my character started with the pushing movement and appeared to be walking, but instead of the snail moving, both my character and the snail just vaguely vibrated with a glitchy sound
). And again at the very end puzzle, the game wouldn't let me use the item where I tried to use it. Instead I had to walk a little bit further to trigger some speech and return and it will automatically activate. Whereas I kept pushing further right after the speech and kept dying. Again had to google to find my walk through. Again everything comes back to how poorly things are signposted. The art is nice and all, but it just seems like the gameplay was implemented by someone who isn't actually a gamer themself as nothing is intuitive. It is mercifully brief though so it doesn't outstay it's welcome. So if you want to enjoy the nice environments go right ahead, but don't expect a satisfying puzzle-platformer experience.
If this were free on some (RIP) Flash website I'd say it was decent most issues aside, but to charge $6 for a Limbo rip-off that's also a buggy mess (my inventory says I have the item I need (and I watched a walkthrough to confirm) but it won't let me use it and thus I cannot finish the game). So as it is... - buggy (can't complete a puzzle despite having the item (confirmed watching a walkthrough)) - no settings, neither in the Main Menu or when you hit Esc in-game (nothing happens) - no rebinding, so you're forced to use the arrow keys - forced 720p fullscreen - Steam shows the framerate never going above 55 (I have a Freesync monitor but that'll likely feel like crap if you don't) I usually only review games I've finished but due to the bugs I couldn't finish this one anyway. Avoid.
I want to give a mixed review, so I just decided to give a thumb up to counter the many "There's no tutorial" reviews because people can't figure out how the game works. You literally need only 4 buttons to play the game. Left and right arrow to walk, up arrow to jump, space bar to sneak and interact with objects. The game even tells you that in the main menu. To be fair, puzzles are too position-sensitive. Sometimes it's not clear which objects you can actually interact with, sometimes you have to stand at a specific position (which is not marked), so I actually consulted a walkthrough few times just to find out that my idea was actually right. The movement controls aren't perfect either. But people complaining about not being able to move the first wooden log in the game - which simply requires you to hold space bar - or about having to press the up arrow instead of space bar to jump and calling that "confusing controls" is simply negativity the game doesn't deserve. The ending was bit disappointing, but I enjoyed most of the 90 minutes and for the dollar I paid that's okay.
PRO: music, atmosphere, graphics, story (i got emotional) CON: gameplay mechanic, stiff controls, story (a bit too enigmatic, undecisive ending), the fact that many things aren't that intuitive and you need too much patience to discover them which alongside the stiff movement it can get annoying af, and last but not least, no audio level controls ingame Conclusion: I had my portion of fun, but I got annoyed most of the time. Go play Limbo. I don't recommend this game unless on sale (how i got it) or in a bundle.
I can see what the devs mean by being inspired by Limbo, and by inspired, they mean ripping off the aesthetics and mechanics. I'm not sure why the main character is a shadow with white eyes since she is not in limbo and just a human on another planet, but my guess is they were hoping to ride the coattails of Limbo to the bank. That being said, can you go wrong making a clone of a great game...apparently yes. The mechanics are similar to Limbo, but with a lot of twitch gameplay, waiting in shadows for minutes, and level design that requires a lot of guesswork and backtracking, looking for hard to spot eggs, sticks, etc. I got close to finishing the game before just getting frustrated with the back and forth and ambiguous events. The main one was spiders being ultra alert early on, where sneaking from shadow to shadow is required, but later you can walk past them while sneaking out in the open without any agro...go figure. In spite of it being some of the poorer writing I have seen in a bit, I watched a playthrough to see the story through and was extremely disappointed that I wasted my time. Spoiler Alert
The beginning started off with fairly incompetent storyline, as after a little girl crash lands on an alien planet, barely avoids drowning, being crushed, being impaled, being eaten by a giant frog, giant spiders, killer parkour, and let us not forget having to pick human embryos off a tree to use as a water float-ee, she decides she loves the planet and wants to live there forever (under a rock with a fire.) Chapter 2 finds her in a cage and about to be cooked and eaten. After barely escaping this and tons more giant spiders and other random badies, she has second thoughts about it being paradise. The last episode, she finds a cat-like thing, spends about 2 minutes with it before going back for 15 minutes of backtracking. After about at total of 5 minutes with her new cat, it dies in an avalanche, where she swears to the heavens that it is all her fault and that the cat was her bff that she betrayed. We are left to see her lamenting the fact she will likely die alone on this planet.
Overall, the game wasn't the worst I've played, but when you make a clone of Limbo, you set the expectation bar high. You can't make a corny, unrealistic storyline, level design with tons of backtracking looking for hard-to-spot ambiguous items and where to use them (Spoiler Alert
Unfortunately, seeing a rock setup mimicing a seasaw makes me think I would need something heavy to drop on the other side to project myself to the ledge, but apparently the devs thought it obvious that I should go find a spider egg, throw it at a pink ball in the ceiling that I should have assumed was a literal giant gumball, push it under the seesaw so that one side sticks to it in order to keep the other side up so I can jump from it to the ledge...obviously.
Yeah, Kings Quest got away with it, but that was 1983 and they were "the only game in town" (quite literally.)
The game is very beautiful with lovely graphics BUT it is extremely short with weird ending and its FULL OF BUGS and you can barely sometimes interact with the objects. Sometimes you can move an item and then you die and respawn and you can't move THE SAME items you once could...Also my game froze after i touched a snail and i couldn't move i had to restart the level.
Tried playing it, got to the part where you have to push the log across (literally like 2 minutes in if that) and she just runs against it... It won't move at all. So uninstalling and never playing again. Waste of time.
