Nostradamus: The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse is a hidden object game with an intriguing and interesting story; however the game suffers from a poor design, a cumbersome user interface and could have definitely benefited from a bit more usability testing before being released. The story centers around Nostradamus and the myth of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Conquest / Pestilence, War, Famine and Death, which have been released into our world by a friend of Nostradamus, who performed an occult ritual that accidentally unleashed them. Nostradamus goes on a hunt for these demons and confronts them, also fixing the damaged they caused on the way and restoring the balance. The story relies heavily on mythic symbols, depictions of these gnostical elements and mystical components which combined, give a lot of flavor to the game. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1308821790 On the other hand, the unwieldy interface and the multitude of bugs made playing the game a downhill experience for me. Right from the beginning of the game, I was confronted with a very inconvenient way of handling the inventory - the section that holds the items is automatically hidden after every action, which means that whenever you want to attempt using an object, you have to perform a useless click in order to open it; there is no option to pin it, so that you have the whole list of items in front of your eyes and if you happen to try multiple items, then you need to open the inventory panel for each of them. I find this implementation decision quite funny, considering the total opposite behavior during hidden object scenes: there is a big Skip button glued on top of the screen, which sometimes covers the items you need to find. Even if you use the zoom-in functionality, it's still very difficult to make a corner of the object visible so that you can click on it. Leaving aside the fact that there is no fast travel or a map, the navigation between different scenes of the game is also rather unintuitive. There are arrows that point to corresponding directions when the mouse cursor touches the border of the screen, but it can also happen that the down arrow triggers only when you're at the top border - which is very confusing. Also, the directions are not always clearly visible (for example, from one location you can go towards right even if there is a wall there without any doors or access points). The perspective between two sequential scenes is also often altered - you press "up/forwards" to go to the next location but when you arrive there you realize that you have to press "left" in order to go back, instead of the expected "down". http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1308821898 The mini-games are of moderate difficulty, but they sometimes lack descriptions of what one is supposed to do. I assume that for an experienced HOG player it takes little time to figure out what the objective is, but for newcomers this might be extremely challenging. Not having an explanation and the fact that some of these puzzles are bugged and the buttons don't respond on the first try (I had to leave the scene and go back to make it work), makes the player ask himself if he's doing something wrong or if he needs to gather some more items first before attempting to solve the puzzle. Sadly, the mini-games are not the only ones subjected to bugs. The whole hint system is broken at times, it can happen that you click the Hint button and you get no response for the next 2 minutes, then all of a sudden, when you're in some other scene, the hint triggers and indicates the direction that it was supposed to show back when you pressed it. In addition to that, clicking on an area around the hint seems to trigger it; it's a good thing that there are no achievements implemented - if one of them would require completing the game without hints, this would be a complete fiasco. The hidden object scenes are nicely drawn and the items blend well with the background. There are two types of hidden object scenes: those in which you have to search the items based on their names and those with a list of shapes that you have to identify. As opposed to the shapes scenes, which are shorter but more difficult, the item-list scenes show you the names of the objects in batches of 10, with a new batch only after you finish the previous one. In my opinion, this is rather inefficient, since one can spend several minutes trying to find the last item from the current batch - a better approach would be to have a new item replacing the old item that has now been found and crossed out from the list. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1308821959 The game has a dark atmosphere overall, however being an older production, it does not have top notch graphics - not something bothersome, but definitely visible during cutscenes. It's not a violent game, but it does have a couple of more sensitive / scary scenes. For example, something that startled me was once scene in which I was supposed to get rid of a snake nest; in other HOGs one would probably chase them away with a fire stick (that I already had in my inventory), but to my surprise the solution was to smack them with a mace - I think this is the first time I encountered this kind of animal violence in a HOG. The asking price is a bit too steep in my opinion, considering the buggy game mechanics and the overall quality of the game. Judging by the fact that it has already been released on Android and on the Bigfish platform a few years ago and that the above-mentioned issues haven't been fixed in the meantime, I conclude that this project will not receive further development (bug fixes, Seam integrated features). I would advise against a purchase, if the quality of the game doesn't rise in the future. An adventure full of puzzles and hidden objects scenes. When I started this game I got so confused on how to use the inventory, then it turned out to be a drag and drop method which is quite buggy in some of the areas. What I disliked next was the lack of map and navigation, and on top of that, there is no journal! You wouldn't know where to go unless you blindly move your mouse cursor until it changes to a navigation arrow which will take you to the next area. As you progress into the game you'll get used to the lack of the map and the drag and drop inventory (Which keeps hiding as you move your pointer away from it). http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1308807985 The story was very basic and quite repetitive, especially when you face the four horsemen, the fight against them is similar to Arkanoid game, it was very challenging. Some of the puzzles were glitchy, you need to repeatedly click on the items in order to pick it up, the same goes for the HO scenes. I've encountered a glitch with the hint when I needed it to show me the next objective, it didn't work until I moved to another area. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1310160920 I liked the graphics, some of the areas looked very dark but some other looked colorful and pretty. What I didn't like the characters style and the lack of voice-overs, it made the game feels so empty, especially that it does have long dialogues. Music was OK but the combination of the sound effects and character's expressions in the cutscenes was really creepy. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1308775439 Pros: +OK soundtracks. +Good graphics in some of the areas. +Average story. Cons: -No journal. -No Map. lots of backtracking. -Creepy sounds effect in cutscenes. -No voice overs. -Buggy puzzles. -Glitchy inventory. -No replay value. -No Steam achievements. -No trading cards. I did enjoy it as I progressed in the story but the game needs lots of fixing, I can't recommend it as it is now. "Nostradamus - The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" ist ein klassisches Wimmelbildspiel. Frankreich im 16. Jahrhundert. This casual point-and-click adventure is impressive in some ways, but it's hard to recommend it due to clunky, inconsistent gameplay. The graphics are quite beautiful, and the story, though somewhat incoherent, has a nice occult atmosphere to it. But the puzzles are all over the place. Some are infantile: for example, placing shaped blocks into shaped holes, something a toddler might find challenging. But others are unnecessarily difficult, made so due to being just plain incomprehensible. Especially annoying is that some items you need to pick up are barely visible on the screen. I strongly recommend playing on “easy” mode, which will at least mark them when your mouse is close. I usually play such games on “hard”, but in this case it was just impossible. The game engine involves dragging and dropping objects, an annoying mechanic in itself, and it's made even more annoying by being quite buggy. There are also some arcade-like sequences of moderate difficulty. They seem very out of place in a game like this. Perhaps hardcore HOG fanatics would find something to enjoy here, but everybody else would surely find this game frustrating.
absolutely the most tedious HOG i have ever played. it is long for a reason. imagine after collecting every single item it takes almost 5 seconds for the item to be in your inventory and some scenes has 12 ITEMS!!!!! it does have a nice story but the execution is very bad it is snail paced game. very annoying and not even close to being a chill HOG. pros. very long it took me more than 4 hours to finish nice story nice graphics cons. very buggy the drag and drop feature is annoying some mini games has no infos on what to do no voice acting very annoying inventory with no "lock" feature you have to defeat every boss with the same type of (brick breaker/pong) game the back tracking arrow change from scene to scene at the beginning of the game you have to twist an item!? they never gave any infos about it (not that i noticed). overall despite being kinda long i absolutely suffered playing this one. it is very very tedious and i dont recommend it at all 1/10 for the efforts
I don't know how else to explain it other than the game frustrated me so much that I have absolutely no mood to even write a longer review about it. It made me so exhausted. It all boils down to an extremely inconvenient item interface, lack of directions, and flawed gameplay. Navigation was also a struggle. The backgrounds don't always imply which places you can go to and just, ugh. I've wasted time. It's not worth all the effort to get through the game, the plot isn't worth it. What upsets me the most is that this technically isn't a broken game, it's a poorly designed game. Even without the bugs, the game doesn't make it easy to be enjoyable. Who tested this and thought this was good? The only shining light about this game was the occassional 3D that made some puzzles interesting and the hidden object scenes are okay visually. Nothing can save this other than a complete rehaul. EDIT: Changing one point-- Hint system isn't broken, just limited. Apparently the 5 orbs represent 5 chances to use hint consecutively followed by a slow refresh to regain orbs at a time. That's why it suddenly uses hint even if you've exhausted it.
Pas encore d'évaluation en français? Fichtre! Diantre!
