I recommend this, but with a caveat. Prepare for disappointment, play at your own risk. C- (Dropped two entire letter grades for the foundry boss and for the final boss.) PROS- • The abilities are really, really neat. You get the feeling of feeling more and more incrementally powerful as the game progresses. • Enemies aren't total pushovers, the enemy AI isn't too over tuned. • Exploration is absolutely rewarded the way it should be in game like this. • The fast travel/tram system is done really well. Even the cutscenes for activating them really draw you in/make you feel like a part of the world you're exploring. • There are definite jank and inconsistent parts during almost all of the boss encounters, but they were really cool concepts, and would have been really interesting and fun if they worked properly. (See below.) I definitely give the design team an A for effort. CONS - • Movement feels solid, except when it matters most. There is a lot of janky crash detection during boss encounters, and there were a lot of "stop auto grabbing the ledge!" moments during pivotal parts. • The bosses are extremely inconsistent: they are either absolute pushovers or "WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA"-level abominations. There are a ton of "what do you want from me, game?" moments as well. • The foundry boss was exhausting. Not because it was a seat-of-the-pants encounter, but because it took more than 15 minutes. There's little to no chance to hit the actual boss. It's just poorly designed. • Speaking of bosses, the final boss is...what even is that? It starts with several "what do you want from me game?" moments, then it devolves into pick-a-path, then enemy spam? And the final phases...there wasn't any shown indication I was even doing anything to it until things exploded. (And you're going to be mad at that last bit, for sure.) You don't even realize you're in the last encounter until you get the final cut scene and credits. It's a testament to the inconsistent design all around.

⚡
Mars 2120 is a fun and engaging 2.5D Metroidvania developed in Brazil by QUByte Interactive. It features clever level design, interesting puzzles, and a solid elemental ability system. The movement feels smooth and the platforming is extremely satisfying, with both close and ranged combat. You’ll face alien monsters, deadly robots, and giant bosses with cool designs and unique patterns. The game also plays with camera perspectives to make platforming more dynamic and enjoyable. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3521293417 Considering its price during Steam sales, the love and care put into the game by the small but talented dev team, and the good time I had playing it, I’d say it’s a solid pick. Definitely worth adding to your wishlist, and if you're a fan of the genre, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem on the Steam store. For me, the game had me from the opening animation! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3521292767 It’s also worth mentioning that both English and Spanish translations are great and include full voice acting, so everyone can enjoy the game 100%. In short, Mars 2120 is a very enjoyable 2.5D Metroidvania with a solid ability system, smart puzzles, and satisfying platforming. I’m really enjoying it so far! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3521297037 Thanks for reading!
What was even the point of having a early access if the devs were never going to take any of the feedback seriously and use it to polish the game before it comes out? It really needed much more time for ironing out the problems. Also, the sounds are just weird and seem to be all echoey and metallic for some reason. The lack of a mouse cursor for aiming despite the game being a twin stick shooter was also really frustrating. The only thing it seems they really did when taking this out of early access was to double the price of the game. No, just go replay metroid dread instead. This is not worth your time.
Controlled poorly in my opinion. Could have an enemy float right above my head and it wouldn't try to attack me. Movement is not smooth. I do give indie games an extra amount of slack, but the gameplay is not good enough to overcome the clearly outdated graphics. With my initial impressions I am not willing to risk playing this past it's refund deadline to see how much it improves. There are flying enemies and you can't look up to melee above your character. WHAT?!
Metroidvania + graphics + giant bosses = A modern/indie Super Metroid. Dash and blast monsters in cinematic action. Controls could use some optimization. Find upgrades and skills to take on mars. Mars 2120 is very much a rough around the edges sort of game. Something which can be forgiven for most indie titles but mars has more issues than that. There's some deliberate design choices that make the whole experience more frustrating than fun but the biggest offender is the crowd control. Almost every enemy can knock you down or worse freeze/shock you, which hard CC's you for a few seconds. If you're unlucky these can be chained one after the other, taking away all player agency for what feels like an eternity as the rest of the game is fast paced. The knock downs/backs get especially frustrating when they knock you into one of the many instant death pits this game loves so much. Bosses fare no better because while they don't hard CC you in place they often have knockbacks and instakill pits too. This is doubly annoying as bosses are massive bullet sponges with boring mechanics that are just a slog to burn through. There's one boss in particular that chases you while destroying your platforms. The thing is that you can run out of platforms, making this fight essentially a dps check. The standard riffle does not do enough dmg to burn the boss in time so you have to jump close to the boss, use the shotgun and dash back to a platform. However if the boss decides to melee you in that time you get knocked to your death... There's not a lot of time to react to these attacks as nearly everything has either a short windup or no windup at all to their attacks. Enemies instantly swamp you as soon as you enter the room and most encounters are against large numbers. This makes using melee very risky due to the aforementioned CC so more often than not you'll resort to the ranged combat. Which does not feel responsive at all. The whole game feel irresponsive as a matter of fact, due to a multitude of reasons. Turning around when running or platforming has a slight delay to it as the character turns around, this makes the movement annoying. Most metroidvania's have smooth movement/combat mechanics but this game has neither. A part of this is also due to some REALLY janky animations for everything. These are most apparant in the cutscenes that this game is a big fan of. Tbh some of these were quite cool and cinematic but they really show the poor animations as they're zoomed in. Here the poor texture quality also becomes apparent, specifically the character models of both the player and enemies. The environments don't suffer this fate as they're at times nice to look at. There's some boring areas too but also a suprising variety in biomes with some breathtaking vistas, especially on the surface. Said areas feature mostly unique soundtracks and soundscapes which was one of the better parts of the game. A few tracks were quite pleasant to listen to and the ambience is relatively immersive. What breaks this immersion though is the lackluster story told through very poorly written logs that feature some cringeworthy voice acting. Voice acting is often something that's too expensive for indies if they want to do it well, so foregoing it alltogether is often a better option. The whole story fell flat and things didn't make sense, like this (spoiler warning ig) random AI that shows up at the end. I've listed mostly negatives other than the visuals/music so far but there's some positives to mainly how open ended the game is. There's multiple ways to progress throught the game despite the guide markers that show the intended route. Going off route nets you some pretty substantial upgrades to so exploration is rewarding in that sense. However said upgrades are part of a rather convoluted progression system that should have been streamlined better. Basically you need to find the upgrades, go to a save station and then spend exp on it but most often you'll have a surpluss of exp to go. Finding these exp orbs during exploration is thus a lame reward as combat nets you more than enough. Still the upgrades are worthwhile so exploration is recommended, unfortunately the level design is quite basic and paired with the clunky movement mechanics it's not really fun to explore the map. Speaking of which the ingame map can only show you the current location and not the full map. This makes going for 100% cumbersome and annoying as you hop from fast travel point to fast travel point to open your map and see if you got it all. Doing it this way will make you sit through a lot of loading screens which is another thing this game suffers from. There's too many loading screens too often and it breaks the flow of the game a lot. That's not the only technical issue as i had some collision problems, fps drops and other bugs to. No crashes fortunately but it did freeze a long time once making me think it crashed before picking up again. I don't think picking up the game is something i can personally recommend as there's just to many issues with it. Maybe if the CC gets reworked/removed it would be just okay but as it stands now it's not worthwhile. The few cool moments that the game had were not worth thrudging through the mediocrity for.
I think this game is under appreciated. The combat might be a bit janky, but the exploration and the progression are very satisfying. The different environments are beautifully crafted. The boss fights are OK-ish. The power ups are cool and I tink the price is OK
Wow this thing is ROUGH. I'm getting lag at 4K on a system that should handle it with no problems. This isnt Cyberpunk, the engine should eat everything its tossed at. During those start game credits, FPS dropped madly like stutter territory at Ultra settings. The menu handling feels like everytime you switch a choice to another the game is going to crash to desktop with an exception. Putting all the cheats and positive buffs straight up in the menu is a plus. I made it to a checkpoint and stopped. I want to install ReShade because the game absolutely needs some visual polish. I reload, click continue and I'm at the start of the game without my XP? I pick reload checkpoint from the menu, and I'm at the same point at the start again? What the hell is going on? Are there bigger, more specific save checkpoints? I cannot remap any of the controls to other buttons. If you dont enjoy firing with the RT trigger well, though luck for you. I'm not enjoying myself at all to be perfectly honest, but I have a feeling that this is going to be a short one so I'm still going to try and blaze through it. I'm not going to ask for a refund, but I really should. The theme is cool, it's just a bit unfinished. The environments are beautiful at times, and the way the game spins around and how easily you get lost is a good game feeling. You feel just as lost as her. But then, the technicals oh my god. This game should be 10$. That's what it's worth to me. EDIT : I changed my mind and requested a refund when i saw the laser sight points somewhere, and you fire something like 15 degrees higher.
