I first played about a year ago. At the time, it didn't run very well on my laptop, so I couldn't really enjoy it. I decided to stop playing and wait for more updates. A few months later, I gave it another try, and I'm really glad I did. The game has improved a lot, and it runs much better now. I've been playing it for hours over the last two weeks and I've been enjoying every minute of it. I definitely recommend it, especially with the official release coming soon!
No Rest for the Wicked is currently stuck in a very interesting dilemma; one that is similar as the Norse God of War games, that it is very well polished yet do nothing particularly well. If you judge it as a Soulslike then it is only harbors some of the most tired aspects of Dark Souls 3 and none of the groundbreaking elements of Dark Souls 1. The world is hand-crafted and gorgeous, yet none of the shortcuts invoke the memorable world designs of a 3d metroidvania. Single bosses are trivial once you learn the moveset since they all become a dodge-or-bait-for-parry affair, yet spongy minibosses kill you in 3-hits and are surrounded by annoying mobs put in solely to waste your time. If the player is not impressed by the combat, they will soon realise that the world is not very immersive and exists only to provide the Ubisoft-style quests and 24/7 NPC vendors. The game integrates resource collecting the same as the dozens of open-world games, and the timing aspects only serve to make them extremely context-sensitive quick time events. Fishing is the worse example of this since you can't rely on natural visual cue, only the QTE circle. Judging NRFTW as a loot game is even more to its detriments, because the exploration that gives them are not very interesting. Combat in loot games and RPG are often basic, this aspect NRFTW nailed, but games like Borderlands 2 and Terraria are hugely elevated by the unique setups that allow creative players to farm bosses that seems unfair at first encounter. The co-op is fun, but I don't think even the developers themselves would believe that it would become the unique selling point of NRFTW. Almost everything is more fun with a friends, with the occasional exceptions such as 3somes. If the developers want to lean more into the co-op aspects, I could only hope that it would not result in cutbacks to actually refining the main game. Because the way I see it now, there is a lot of improvements to be made.

Everything you're looking for in an action-RPG! Excellent game!
