Nightmare Frames is a supernatural thriller where you'll step into the shoes of Alan Goldberg, in the search for the scariest horror film of all time. An enthralling journey through the streets of the Hollywood of the 80s, a small haunted town, and even Hell itself.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away.
Nightmare Frames is a Hollywood-set horror tale about a pretentious scriptwriter who feels trapped writing schlocky horror movies; When his pet prestige project (and perceived ticket out of the horror ghetto) falls through thanks to a mysterious death, it sets off a chain of events that end up with him following a trail of corpses to recover a mysterious, cursed film. The search will lead him to a (mostly) abandoned town and... further afield. The game starts off slowly, methodically building up to some respectable third-act madness, and most puzzles are both grounded in reality and fairly simple (with a couple of exceptions). The writing is sometimes a little clunky, but mostly very good - the writer is very obviously a fan of the horror genre, and the script is peppered with genre references. Better yet, that script (which brings to mind John Carpenter's Cigarrette Burns) is great! The central mystery is compelling, the spookiness escalates well, and there are a bunch of great characters (shoutout to the diner owner). The protagonist, who starts out as an unlikeable, pretentions little ♥♥♥♥, ends up being a standout: He has a bona fide (if obvious) character arc and a basic sense of decency that end up being very enjoyable. The game's structured around a series of multi-room hubs which you proceed through in a fairly linear series of puzzles and revelations, but there are a tons of optional interactions where you can muck about to get some jokes, additional character development, and/or references. The whole thing took me about 8 hours to complete, which includes getting stuck on a couple of puzzles and some achievement hunting (those damn quizes). The Blackwell games remain my personal gold standard for horror adventure game writing, but this one was a treat, and a very impressive outing from a solo developer.

Wonderful little point and click adventure - well written, great setting. Recommended.
honestly one of the best PnC games I've played : plenty of real life references and lore, a fascinating period in time lovingly rendered, good albeit very simple puzzles, an intriguing story and two amazing tone shifts from the sundrenched los angeles slow start into bleak american gothic. The setting and mood are the greatest accomplishment, with the movie and hollywood lore nostalgically guiding you through a sick, twisted and honestly depraved trip into the search for the absolute. The ending sequence is pretty weak and the supernatural element is way too simplicistic to truly engage, but everything else is really on point. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any lover of point n click adventure games.
Instant classic! <3 We're living in a horror renaissance, and this was an immersive and lovingly crafted piece of art. I convinced myself there was voice acting (there's not, only a little bit of voice in music / radio / tv) because the characters are so well developed. I also really dug the way that object inspection writing was done, giving you a little history Alan couldn't know but that makes the experience feel so much more rich for the player. I agree that it feels a little more like a visual novel due to the simplicity of the puzzles, but that didn't bother me. The writing was plenty enjoyable! Only one puzzle stumped me and I think there was a clue I overlooked when trying to figure it out.
This is a really enjoyable horror adventure. The story is very interesting and suspenseful. The artwork is great, especially the character portraits. The writing is witty and detailed in the descriptions. The music is fittingly 80s and quite good. It got considerably darker and gorier than I was anticipating, so if you are sensitive to that, beware. Out of the three Postmodern Adventures titles, I rate it on par with Dark Rites of Arkham, but with a very different vibe. Wholeheartedly recommended!
