If I could I would give this game a neutral rating because the dev promised "over a dozen sidequests" and " 2-3 hours in length" for "$1.99" and that's what you get. But It still feels more like a homework for a gamedesign-class than a serious release. In the beginning you have to learn how to survive grinding, how to use the karma-system wisely and then, from one moment to another the game is over, the story finished and... youp. My Level 8-deer was already way overpowered. o_O What's also bothering me is that the Gui is designed for a party, but (afaik) you remain alone. Having to chose when you're alone is... strange. And don't get me startet on the classic RPGmaker-disease "We use 16 bit sprites & tiles but highres-fonts and drawings and everything else." @_@
A good game for the price ($2). Very short. But quite fun. The developer listened to me and responded right away when I found a bug (creating the vine bridge to human village). If this developer put more effort into extending the game I could easily see it progressing further and further, but I can see why he would just choose to make a small offering and charge a small price, to see what the interest/profitability of game creation might be out there. I hope this developer continues to make games and I would be interested in another one or a longer one from him.
As others have said, this feels like something that would have come out of a high school or undergrad game dev course--short, unpolished, mechanically lacking, and with an abrupt ending. It's pretty much what it says on the tin so there's that.... The idea had promise, but the execution is lackluster and slightly buggy (it's possible to end up in an unwinnable state, and UI glitches remain unfixed so far). I've played far worse games for two dollars, admittedly, but I'd rather play a $20 game with far more than ten times the content and polish. Cheers to the developers, and I hope they continue to develop their talents so that in a few years they look back on this game as a "what was I thinking?" moment.
Nightingale Downs is a game that is decently difficult unless you wanna grind, interesting story that sounds like real life about humanity trying to claim territory with some fantasy logic inside of it, I will say more when I complete the game.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1317687758
(Got this game courtesy of the developer's submission to SteadyGiveaways. Thanks!)
And thus began the adventures...of "Shrodeer"!
Before he was Captain Deer in CrocoMars, he was "Shrodeer", the mightiest of deer who murdered the civilization of New Hope, who were only fleeing from an evil dictator to live a new life....okay, silly fanfiction ideas aside, let's get to it... Nightingale Downs is a short RPG involving playing as a deer (in which you name, but I can predict various people will make a parody name like I did...thus having "Deer-sonas") to save the forest from humans, rabid animals, and even possessed trees. But your main goal is to stop humans from damaging your forest any further than they already have. You don't care what ordeals they're going for, but your goal is to drive them away. What better way is there to scare the humans away than to attack their base of operations? So, what's to expect? Plenty of 1 vs 1 fights with a rare exception of 2 vs. 1, but that will usually be a sheep and a pig. nothing to worry about. Difficulty will generally begin difficult until you know how to boost your stats in a proper manner. Once you figure it out (and it won't take much effort), it'll be a cakewalk. In the beginning, enemies attack faster than you, you take a lot of damage, and your attacks are weak. This means that it would be wise to boost your health, your physical defense, your attack, and finally your agility (so you can attack first and for your hits to land...as you'll miss quite a bit later on). Every other stat is either pointless or negligible. It's a bit disappointing to know that the difficulty in the beginning needs to be scaled back, but you'll be just fine in the end. After your fights, you'll earn something called "Karma". During your playthrough, you'll end up getting the 3 stat point bonus and the full recovery from the shop quite often (Single stat point and banana will be a waste of your purchase). This'll help with your powerups quite easily. You'll be treated to a few sidequests in the 3 worlds, but there is one are I noticed where there was a gamebreaking bug. In the 2nd world (the jungle), make SURE you kill the giant tree before even talking to the bulky elk up north. Trust me, you'll regret it if you don't heed that advice. Please note that I did say that this game IS short. We're talking about 1-1.5 hours in length. It's a decent RPG, but in need of polishing and tweaking. It's nice if you're looking for a short and easy game. It's got a nice little charm that's nice for children and adults, but keep its length in mind. I was originally led to believe I'd spend twice as much time than I actually did in-game. Asking price is $2, but waiting for a sale where it may be at $1 would be preferable. Though I will say, it's interesting to play as a deer of immense strength. 8/10 Time will tell if we'll ever meet "Shrodeer" again...
Cool, nice and different game with a very cute protagonist :3
Streamed this on Jan 28, 2017 for about an hour. Here are my thoughts regarding this game. This game is a different variation on the classic RPG/JRPG genre. Instead of playing a humanoid you play an animal defending their homeland from human encroachment. The theme permeates the game in a good way and the story is fairly well defined. The voice acting in certain points is a nice touch where it describes your story. The gameplay itself is simple and straightforward. I got a chuckle from the fact it seems like your protagonist deer is a vampire somehow. The stat training system is a nice deviation from the normal level-up process. You can choose what to improve. The Karma system is also a welcome departure from your traditional gold-and-shop system. For beginners, the ease of the mini-quests to help you improve your protagonist. The items I did come across had a nice mix of health and spirit restoration. Now for the things that kind of bothered me. The fundamental lack of controller support was glaring, even though the Steam page says there is partial support. Any game of this genre should have controller support by default. The keyboard mapping is a bit odd, but at least you can manage it. The having to literally walk into your target to talk to them is also a bit irksome, only because it'd be easier to use the traditional interact-to-talk. The lack of healing could turn away people as you either need semi-rare item drops or enough Karma to get a heal (similar to an Inn). Also the text can be a little hard to read due to the font used. On the flipside of the overall simplicity, it could push away people who like more robust RPG experiences. For $1.99 USD and the fact that the game overall is pretty solid, I recommend it, especially if you aren't into heavy RPG titles (like Final Fantasy-esque things). Check out my Youtube video of the gameplay and see for yourself! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCiWIOk3_Ag
