It's not about saving the world. In this "leisure adventure RPG," failing student Marie pursues alchemy, adventures, and quests while aiming to graduate in five years. "Atelier Marie," the origin of the Atelier series, has been remade with new elements!

I love the Atelier series. Honestly, at first I thought it would be difficult to complete the game in standard mode, since Marie has five in-game years until the final exam. So I started the game in endless mode, where I could take the final exam whenever I wanted. In endless mode, you also have five years until the exam, but you can start it at any point after those five years. But after playing, I realized that the five years don't fly by as quickly as I thought. I thought this because each resource gathering and monster battle takes a day, and traveling to different locations also takes a certain number of days, depending on how far away the location I need is. I played Atelier Sophie and really enjoyed it. It had similar features, but the days dragged on more slowly due to the time of day. What can I say about this game? Of course, most things in this game are designed for convenience, but as a fan of Atelier Sophie, I wasn't thrilled at first because things moved too quickly. Alchemy in this game is very simple, as is learning recipes. Completing quests is easy, as is traveling. I'm not saying this is bad, it's just unusual for me to see this after so many hours in Atelier Sophie. It makes sense that synthesis recipes in this game are very easy to obtain, since Marie is an academy student, unlike Sophie, who came up with and wrote down all the recipes herself, without any special training. She did everything herself, and I respect her for that. What I liked about this game is the companion recruitment. You literally hire someone to join your team for money so they can go resource hunting with you. With the exception of your friend Schia, who is always willing to join you on your journey for free. The music is very pleasant and beautiful. In my opinion, there's no bad music in Atelier games. The graphics are beautiful and high-quality. The game features a variety of events that are very interesting to watch. Overall, the game is excellent. It's very relaxing and captivating with its warmth and simple gameplay. After completing it in Endless Mode, I'll definitely play it again in Standard Mode to experience the full weight and anxiety of Marie, given the limited time until the final exam. I might add more here once I've completed the entire game, but that's all for now.
As someone who has never really played JRPGs let alone never played an Atelier game before, I was quite surprised at how enjoyable this was. It's the first JRPG that I've felt doesn't focus on action, and rather puts way more emphasis on character relationships and stories. Definitely will continue playing more games in this franchise. 8/10
A free DLC offering a pair of glasses commemorates the 25th anniversary. However, I remember playing Atelier Marie more than 25 years ago, beating the game multiple times and having a lot of fun. Atelier Marie Remake has both 2D and 3D versions, back in the day I was playing 2D. The gameplay is mostly about making different potions to sell for money or gaining reputation, and venturing out of town to various places gathering raw materials and defeating enemies as human or monster. I remember being cautious making a save before brewing a potion, since there is always a small chance of failure with common recipes, and a chance of success with difficult one. As a kid I got obsessed with testing my luck, turning it into a sort of gambling game lol. Speaking about combat, at first your character Marie is weak and can only throw one energy ball at a time toward one enemy, so it's necessary to have companions whenever you go out of town for a small fee. Companions are at the local pub or the weapon shop, since you can have two, the best choices are Kugel and Mu. Kugel has the best single target attack damage, and after leveling up, each character gains special skills: Kugel can hit all enemies in a line, while Marie and Mu can hit all enemies at once. If you buy the best available in the weapon shop, Marie can become the team's most powerful attacker. As for locations, the mountain area unlocks early but being the most dangerous place to visit, the black and dark-blue dragons often ambush in groups. However, some ores I needed for potion only came from there. That’s where the cute elves come in, collecting materials safely for a small fee. You can find elves in the Fairy Forest, and hire multiple fairies working for you for gathering materials or making potions. If they’re not dispatched or lack the needed materials, they just wander around the workshop or sleep, but they're always fun to watch. Additionally, fairies will occasionally knock on your door offering cleaning services or selling special items. Speaking of visitors, most events involving companions visiting are requesting potions. There isn’t much dialogue or story, but if you make hair growth serum, it triggers a funny event with the weapon shop owner; if you make a live rope, you’ll catch the famous thief. Other events mostly revolve around dates: you can pick up a special herb that cures your best friend Achillea’s sickness on the solar eclipse day; on March 8th, everything at the college is 50% off. Atelier Marie is actually relaxing and slow paced. The remaster keeps everything from the original, updating the graphics, making it convenient to relive old memories. However, by today’s standards it lacks content. I finished exploring everything and making most potions after 2 game years, yet there's 4 in total so the rest of the time is wasted, just waiting for Schea to get sick so I could make the right potion then trigger the good ending. I tried the 3D version too. For the first time I could run around town, control and meet mini figures. The basics and content still felt much the same, since I’d already beaten the game and opening doors and entering new places takes longer than in the 2D version, I decided not to continue. Not long ago, I played another game titled Atelier Schea, not knowing it was part of the franchise. In that game, you need to finish one book per school year, many NPCs returning from Atelier Marie are hirable, including Enderk the knight in the king’s castle and Kreis the blue-haired boy at the college. The most powerful companion might be Kirieliche, who becomes available after you defeat her, but I still preferred my old team. Both Marie and Schea are playable, with more locations available including further towns and even more locations to visit from there. The events are much more varied, I can see how the series developed from the first game. Anyway, back to Atelier Marie, it's a great game from the 90s. If you played it back in the day, it’s a must have, but it might not be the best game to get into the series.
While pretty basic, its still a very fun and engaging atelier game, once you get past the first year. I was suprised that the first game in the whole series would already have so many staples of the franchise and im excited and hopeful, that Gust remakes other older titles. Considering its a Koei Tecmo published game, 50€ isnt suprising, but do it like me and get it on a sale.
Recommended when on sale Coming from the Atelier Ryza games, this one has less complexity in crafting, and is overall simpler and shorter. With multiple endings and a variety of events with different requirements, there is some replayability.
